Remember, I ‘m fairly new to this - coming up on 3 years of paying attention to card making product releases, so I don’t know if this is a new phenomenon or just coincidence.
I’ve noticed that different companies will come out with the same “theme” almost at the same time. The most recent I noticed is the Greetery’s recent book release, and C9’s upcoming book themed release. I wish I could remember others off the top of my head, but I can’t. It’s happened several times or more that I’ve noticed, I mean enough so that it’s on my radar, KWIM?
I’m not talking about holiday releases that are themed similarly, or even seasonal stuff like butterflies or bears. But the kind of random themes that one wouldn’t necessarily think of. So, are there moles in the different company’s design or other staff? Or is it just purely coincidence? And am I the only one who has noticed and wondered about this?
ETA: oops, I posted to the wrong board, however please feel free to share your thoughts just the same 🤪

I've noticed as well. Sometimes I chalked it up to something being trendy, and other times I wondered if the companies were related and I didn't realize it. But usually I did just find it odd that 2 or 3 companies all suddenly decide to create a line about sledgehammers or toasters or koalas out of the blue.

That's funny you mention this because when I saw the C9 book sneak peek today, I thought huh, The Greetery just came out with book dies too. I do believe there is another company coming out with book themed stuff this month too but for the life of me I can't remember who it was.
I'd love to know if it's coincidence or somewhat planned.

Like the cool watch kit from The Stamp Market and Altenew's sweet little alarm clock set?
I don't think it is random coincidence or spying. I think there are themes of the year that show up on clothing, bedding, pillows, wall art and in crafting just as certain colors are popular. I'm not sure who/where the decision gets made that we are all making llamas or foxes or bears this year, but somewhere that is happening.

Oops, wrong board 😳 I meant to post in the Cardmaking board…but thank you for humoring me over here girls!
You girls may be right about things being on trend, I guess I don’t pay attention well enough to realize that book motifs (for example) are an in thing right now.

It could be that they all visit design conferences, see the new designs that people are trying to sell, and it takes off from there. I don’t know which comes first, the chicken or the egg. Do they see mushroom designs and they all want mushrooms, or do enough companies express an interest in mushrooms so manufacturers start making more mushroom designs. But I do believe all tbe companies follow and influence each other in some way. It is not all in a vacuum.

I’ve noticed it, too. Whatever the reason, I think it can have its advantages. If one company offers designs in a style that is a bit too cute for my taste, a different company may offer designs that I like better.

I've noticed this too. The one example that I think is really interesting are the bookmark dies. Several companies released bookmark dies at the same time. That can not be a coincidence.

I think they’re all just following whatever wider trends are being spotted elsewhere. It’s funny you mention a book themed release from a few scrapbook/ papercraft companies because I’ve seen book themes recently in the decorated cookie world too. Just minutes ago I received an email featuring a new book themed cookie cutter release from The Flour Box, and at last month’s CookieCon “books” was one of the Sugar Show competition themes.

I asked a friend who designs stamps and dies for a company about this.
She said that 99% of the time it is picking up on trends in the broader design world - fabric, art, etc. Apparently there is a whole industry that looks at and predicts trends!!
Then of course, after there are a bunch of book designs, other companies may jump on it.
BTW, Spellbinders and The Stamp Market have also done books. I love how completely different each company's spin is

I was about to post something similar to Crazy4’s comment, I think it’s about general trends. A friend’s niece is currently making adorable book themed polymer clay earrings. This is her website, The Ellory Co, at theelloryco.com/The book collection has been on her Instagram. I’m not sure if it’s already in her online store. Shameless endorsement: Her pieces are very detailed and refined. They’re not the thick clay designs of yore 😀

Well, it’s cardmaking not scrapbooking so NSBR is also accurate 😀

If she still had some of her little ghost earrings in stock I would have been very tempted!

Fact: There are trend forecasting services for the fashion, textile and home furnishings industries.
Speculation: Perhaps there are similar trend forecasting services for the stationery / paper manufacturing industry, too. Or maybe some of the same organizations that put out forecasts for fashion / textiles also do forecasts for stationery / paper, too. I don't know for sure, but I think this is likely.
I learned trend forecasting in design school. My academic institution subscribed to all the trend forecasts, and they made them available to students at the library.
Then later, after graduation, when I got jobs in the industry, I found that my employers subscribed to those services, too.
When I later taught textile design courses, I used to take my students on field trips to hear talks by the trend forecasting service staffers.
If you've ever wondered how all the major clothing brands have t-shirts, socks and all kinds of other items in the exact same colors as the others, now you know!
