My mom got a new phone and part of the offer was a new ipad (she is with AT&T, and I'm with Verizon, if that matters). She took the ipad and gave it to my son, but he doesn't need it. It is brand new, in the wrapper - can I return it to an Apple store, or Best Buy or any place that sells ipads?

Was the iPad free or did she get a phone discount if she also bought an iPad? If she paid something for the iPad, I think if she was to return it, she would have to also pay the regular price for the phone. And she didn’t get it from Best Buy or the Apple Store, so they won’t take it back without a receipt. If the iPad was absolutely free, and your son doesn’t want it, I would donate it.

I’d go back to the store, but there is likely a line fee. There often is with these promos. Meaning the iPad may have cellular service and she is paying for an additional phone line.
Your best bet would be to go back to the store or call her carrier to find out if she can cancel the “deal”.

I'll have to ask my sister who was with her, my mom won't understand at all what I am asking!

I don't see how you would return it to another store when it was a gift with purchase from AT&T. If the Apple Store still does trade-ins, that would be a possibility. (We did that once, but it's been several years so I'm not familiar with their current practice.)

If you are using the trade-in to purchase something new, they’ll apply it to your new device as payment. Otherwise, they’ll give you store credit if you are not purchasing a new device. They will also take non-Apple devices. If the product has no trade-in value, they will recycle it for you if you want.

I was thinking that she would go to the store *with* her mom. And that mom would be next to her if she called. But really, I spent years saying that I was DH on the phone. He was deployed a lot and in those days, all that I had was a POA, which was useless on the phone. Now, most accounts will let you designate other authorized users. But not 30 years ago!

If it was free with purchase, then no. I don’t think you can take it back to a store and get cash/giftcard.

Man, I have old ipads and phones too that I would love to trade in or at least recycle!

If there is a local Autism group in your area, see if they know of a family who could use it
There is a specific program non verbal/limited verbal ASD persons use (proloq) to speak as well as other programs to help with day to day activities and calming themselves.
It could definitely be used.

Why not just look up the market value for it and sell it yourself on Marketplace or eBay? Someone will want it come Christmastime if the price is right and getting something for it is better than nothing.

Someone will buy it for the holidays.
