No, but a FB group I am in someone posted about their father, who is a disabled Vietnam vet, and mother who are in their 80's and had evacuated their home and fled to a hotel where they had a reservation, to be told that the hotel had overbooked and their reservation had been canceled. So the couple went back home. I'm not sure if they were convinced to leave again, but that story has been on my mind. I will need to go back and look for an update.

My son told me about him this morning. He (my son) thinks Dan is tough (not dumb) and will be just fine. I said we will see. I don’t think it seems like a great idea.

If it’s the same guy who was interviewed on the CBS morning show, I think his boat IS his home. He said he had nowhere else to go so he was going to ride it out in his boat and that he slept through Helene. I personally think that’s nuts. |

I don't think I'd roll the dice with a cat 5 hurricane and certainly not on a sailboat. I hope lady luck is shining on him.
Perhaps how wrong the weather service was with Helene has something to do with his decision. Helene was supposed to head west to Nashville after Georgia instead it went east to western North Carolina pretty early.

Seen on MSNBC: Local officials are telling people if they won’t evacuate then at least put their name on their body so they can be identified later.

If he is on a boat......why didn't he drive the boat a few hundred miles north and get his boat and himself out of harms way.

Wouldn't you think the hotel could find *somewhere* for them to sleep? on a rollaway bed in some corner. Or ask other hotel guests if they would accommodate this couple somehow? I know my dh and I would take them in to our hotel room if we were in that situation. |

It is such a reminder how much disparity there is between the have and have-nots. My DH, DD, and I would have loaded up our car with our howling cat and gotten the hell out of there on Sunday without a second thought. We have the means and the transportation that makes that decision easy. Not to say that Lt. Dan didn't contribute to his ended up living on a boat without a motor to move it during hurricane season but it the most vulnerable of our society that end up without choices.

I get what you are saying but there also were posts saying that there were free Uber rides to shelters. There also were videos of police and other people offering to take him. In one video he said he didn’t want to go to a shelter. Which I also get, and it’s his choice. But then hopefully nobody will have to put their life at risk to save him. |
