After going to the CTMH closeout event where I bought a couple of card making kits I’ve found complete joy in making cards. So, I want to start making more! I have enough paper and other supplies to really get going but I’m wondering what everyone does for card bases? Do you find blank bases in bulk and use those? Or do you just make your own out of cardstock? And, if you buy blank bases where is the best place to buy them? You guys are all the pros so I’m really interested in hearing what everyone is doing. Thank you!!

Yay! Welcome, welcome I used to get pre-made bases because I thought they'd be more precise than cutting and folding my own, but they weren't - they always seemed to need a little trimming, or a lot of trimming, to get the edges neat and even (I'm a perfectionist!) so I started buying a ream of white cardstock and cutting it in half, scoring and folding my own. Worked out much cheaper and one less thing to keep buying. I used to use Neenah Classic Crest 110lb cover weight cardstock which is very sturdy, and I'd use the 80lb for card panels and elements. But it got harder to get reasonably priced 110lb and the 80lb was a bit flimsy for bases. So recently I switched to Hammermill 100lb from Amazon which is sturdy enough for my needs for bases and not too heavy to use for panels or die cut elements, so I only have to get one ream for everything. It's about $20-25 and folks here often shout about it when it's on sale. I don't use colored cardstock as often so if I want to make a card with a colored base I usually just add a panel on top of the white base, which has the added bonus of giving a white surface inside for writing. I know Shakti has recommended some colored bases that are white inside that sound very convenient. I've purchased these card bases in bulk for some projects - www.clearbags.com/cards-envelopes/cards/basisI've bought some base + envelope sets at Michaels or Joann's but be careful, some are not actually A2 size (if that matters to you).

I use the Neenah 110lb mostly because I got lucky a while back when Joann had paper 50% off with free shipping. They don't carry that paper anymore.
Scrapbook.com has some A2 pre-cut, pre-scored white cardstock but since I like to make different card sizes, cutting my own works best for me.
I also have a pack of Recollections 110lb I'm working through but to me that paper is not white, white. But depending on the person I am giving the card to, I don't really think they will notice like I do.
I don't often use colored cardstock, but if I do I have some I purchased from Paper Trey Ink a long time ago. I have also used Lawn Fawn.

I'm not too picky about my card bases, and I usually use 80-110 lb. cardstock. However, I will use thinner cardstock if I'm not doing too much to the front. I've also used heavy-weight patterned paper.
I won't buy any more pre-made card bases because they are usually too flimsy or aren't cut/folded straight.

I use a multitude of things. My go-to is the 110 lb Neenah classic crest solar white which I get by the ream at a decent price at OfficeSupply.com. I get the 80 lb there as well.
I use Recollections 110 lb from Michael's for bases as well -- they have some interesting mixed-shade packs. I have blues, blue-greens, and neutrals (labeled something like "sky," "ocean," and "coffee and cream").
For colored card stock for panels and die cutting, I buy assorted packs of Neenah Astro-brights and Michael's Recollections 65 lb.
The pre-made colored card bases with white insides are from Joann (Parkland brand) or Michael's (probably more Recollections brand, but I'm not positive), always purchased on sale and usually with an additional coupon discount or reward certificate (or both), otherwise they are not particularly cost-effective. I use them exclusively for turning handmade cards I receive into new handmade cards to donate.
I have small amounts of other random card stock and card bases as well, but that's the bulk of it.

Like some of the gals above, I use Neenah Classic Crest 110 lb. Every time I get a new ream, I take it to a local printing shop and have them cut half of it in half lengthwise and the other half cut in half horizontally. Then I have card bases that open both ways. All I have to do is score them.
Have fun making your cards!

I started out using premade bases from Michaels. Then I switched to making my own and just buying envelopes from Michaels. Michaels 110lb coloured cardstock is pretty nice. I bought some when they had a sale. I also buy Accent 100lb cover stock that kitbop recommended to me, but it is currently unavailable on amazon.ca. One of my goals for the year is to use up the premade bases I have left. Maybe I'll use them for Cardtober.

I have even gone up to Accent Opaque 120lb cardstock for card bases justjac - it's just lovely - although 110 works totally fine. I bought the 120 when they were out of stock of 110 and I panicked. I always get a "scared" feeling when Amazon is out of stock of my basic supplies. Of course, I have OVER a reem of the stuff in my stash right now, so there is no reason for that, but covid shortages did a real number on me I think the Accent opaque is *better* than Neenah - a bit smoother for colouring, a heavier feel at every weight, and certainly cheaper for Canadians!

I prefer to use Neenah Classic Crest 110 lb Solar White #04456 for bases. I only buy it on sale.
Otherwise I use the Recollections (Michael's) brand that is 110# / 300 g/m2. It is not as white as the Neenah but for the cost it's close enough. (and really who is going to compare!) Beware though, it is not a true 8.5x11. After attaching my card front (A2) it seems I always need to trim 1/16 or so off of one side, which drives me bananas!
If I'm only stamping or inking I sometimes use the Hammermill with the chameleon on it. But mostly I use it for layering or foiling.

Depends on how you color. Ink blending wants super-smooth, but colored pencils like Prismacolor prefer a little bit of "tooth" in the paper.

I stocked up on ctmh card bases before they closed. When I'm out of those I will buy the 110lb from Michael's and have staples shack then in 1/2 for bases.

I have both. Pre-cut and folded card bases from Hobby Lobby, Joann's and from Amazon. I use these for recycling handmade cards or make cards to donate.
I buy 110lb cardstock from Michael's and the 100lb Hammermill from Amazon on sale , last time it was $17.

I love using colored card bases and prefer using 110lb over 100lb. My preferred brand is Papertrey Ink.
