www.compass.com/listing/11900-river-road-potomac-md-20854/1572526240814555385/Here's the crazy part www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/10/12/daniel-snyder-mansions-potomac-fairfax/The challenge of selling this property, which includes a three-story guesthouse, is that it has come to feel a bit dated for high-end buyers, said Sarah Hake, an agent with the Compass realty firm who specializes in high-end real estate and toured the property.
“The problem in a nutshell is, at that price point, buyers are looking for a turnkey solution,” Hake said. “And both homes, while the land itself is beautiful, most luxury buyers at that price point will consider them tear downs.”
To most people, the idea of buying and then tearing down a 25,000-square-foot mansion might seem ludicrous. But, Hake said, wealthy buyers want higher ceilings and larger entertaining spaces than the home offers, so it “would need an extensive renovation to suit today’s buyer.”The VA house - part of the land used to be part of Washington's original Mt Vernon estate www.sothebysrealty.com/ttrsir/eng/sales/detail/766-l-3012-38rrcd/7979-e-boulevard-drive-alexandria-va-22308

And this is (partially) why DH and I will never buy a house while we're in this area.
We considered putting in an offer on a 940 sq. ft. house that eventually sold for $399,900 (we didn't plan on offering that much). The same house sold for $37,000 in 1979. Unreal.
Edit: Did you see the property taxes on the Virginia one? $436,185 ... A YEAR. Ridiculous.

Goodness. Nice homes, but geezzz, I can't imagine living in such luxury. I wouldn't know how to act.
The way I see it, if I didn't do any upgrades to my home over the years of living in it, then I would expect to not get top dollar price. I think they just need to face the fact that they will need to lower the price some to compensate for the home being outdated.

Not so much outdated (built 2018) as devoid of personality or charm.
The amount of hoarded wealth that exists in this country is obscene.

So sterile. There’s nothing interesting about that house at all. Even the landscaping is boring to nonexistent. What a waste of resources.

Higher ceilings? The MD is nothing but 2 story spaces except for the bedrooms. And the bedrooms all look large enough to host a party inside. My kids friends have parties in apartments that would fit inside those bedrooms. Kinda baffled.
The VA one is decorated kind of drearily and it makes some spaces feel closed in when they are not. Definitely says cranky bossy old man in the decor.

I think its a stunning place! The Potomac one, I can't see the second. I'm not keen on the wood that's in some rooms, the green bathroom is yuck and all the stainless steel in the kitchen is awful but the home itself is stunning imho.
Sadly, even if I could afford it, I wouldn't know how to live in somewhere so large; I'd be wandering around only part of it in the main, I'm sure.

Edit: Did you see the property taxes on the Virginia one? $436,185 ... A YEAR. Ridiculous. I don't live in Fairfax. We're closer to DC and our prices are outrageous also. We bought our house in 1998 for $229,000. That wouldn't even get you a garage today. We just bought in at the right time. There's a house for sale down the street from me for $1.4 million that's only a bit bigger than ours. Nicer of course, since it's been renovated/added onto. But still, wow. Dh and I always say that we don't understand how any ordinary young family can buy a house around here these days. We do have one of the Washington Capitals' (hockey) players up the street, but you know he can afford it. And two young lawyers are renting across the street from me (a State Department family who are overseas right now owns the house) -- for $7,000 per month! omg. That's almost three times what our mortgage was. Yeah, it's crazy.

My DS and SIL moved from Petworth in DC proper to buy a house. They both do very well but ended up in Manassas which is as close in as they could afford. They're super happy out there but now they're an hour from DC on the train. They couldn't find anything in their price range closer in.

We lived in Burke which is in Fairfax County from 1983 - 1988. We purchased our 3 bedroom for $89,000 and when we sold it in 1988 there was a bidding war and it went for double our purchase price. Made our move back to Ohio being able to purchase a much larger home than we anticipated!

Tearisci We were looking near-ish to there. It's crazy. monklady123 Haha, love it. He's one of my faves. mommaho Burke is a nice area! DH had an interview early this year in Indiana and we were so convinced he was going to get it, and we could've bought a house in cash. Sigh. Just gotta keep looking.

There's almost nothing appealing to me about either of those houses. The one in the listing, I at least like some of the wood elements, but that is it.
If I won one of those ridiculous billion dollar plus lotteries I'd rather buy 200 $300,000 houses* and then give them away than buy one $60 million dollar house. And with my remaining millions, I'd do everything I ever dreamed of doing with the house I already own, then start planning my future travels, and be perfectly content.
(*Just to clarify, I live in an area where one can purchase an older, but perfectly livable house of say 1500-1800 sq. ft., with 3 bedrooms & 1.5 to 2 bath for that price.)

I can't see the WaPo house but i think Dan Synder, former owner of the Redskins, owned it.

I can't see the WaPo house but i think Dan Synder, former owner of the Redskins, owned it. Yes, he owns both houses or used to. (Technically, he gave one to the American Cancer Society and they listed it) Which begs the question, why does anyone need 2 houses like that in the same area? Here's a gift article. You should be able to see it without a paywall wapo.st/4hauFX6
