The stories are all probably 100x more interesting than the most likely explanation in my mind--that it was a simple mistake. After decades of genealogy work, I can promise you that such mistakes are very common. Cemeteries and record books alike are full of errors. And so are the tales that families and communities tell about their dearly departed.

That's interesting. Wiki says that Feb 31st was used when the actual date of death was unknown. That fits this story as she could have died on the 26th or the 28th February.
