Kinda of a S/O of the decorating thread. Every year I take all my crap down and wash it good. I don't usually do a very good job scrubbing down the tops of the cabinet though. It's one of my must do things this year. What is the best product to use? It's all unfinished oak(ish) (probably more like plywood crap) up there for the most part.

You know if you don't put anything up there, you never have to get up there and will have no idea that it's dirty

I think something like Murphy’s Oil Soap would do it. And once it’s all clean and dry, put a layer of Glad Press N Seal up there. Then the next time all you have to do to clean up there is to peel it up and put down a new layer. Work smarter, not harder! ETA: works for glass fridge shelves too!

Honestly, if this is your forever home, I would spend time & money building or buy small cabinets/cubbies with doors to fill in the void between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. With the right trim and hardware, you could make it look really cohesive with the existing cabinets.
I'll never understand the design for having cabinets not going to the ceiling.

I solved the problem of grimy cabinet tops by having the new kitchen installed with ceiling high tops. No issues at all. Prior to that used sugar soap to clean the tops.

I have no advice but this question reminded me of my mother cleaning the cabinets and the hood over the stove. She used spic n span (this was the 70's) and the paint came off with the grease. lol Don't use spic n span

What is the best product to use? I love Mr. Clean "Clean Freak" - you can spray it on, let it sit for just a few minutes and it really gets tough stuff off. It works beautifully.

It was one of those things you don't realize you haven't taught some one until too late.

Yellow Mr Clean. And then I lay down paper towels or wax paper, whatever I reach or first, so I don’t have to clean it all up again in six months. I do plan to renovate the cabinets so they go all the way to the ceiling. I don’t decorate above my cabinets.

I got to many other projects going on, that is isn't a priority. I really need to get our bathroom finished. My son/husband duo has drop the hammer on this one and I haven't been on their butts to finish. Then there are 10 other projects that need to be done. When you buy a starter new home, you get nothing extra, like tall cabinets. Unless you pay up front. And that starter new home has been our home for over 20 years. lol

Two of the things I love about my 1950s built forever home are the raised foundation and kitchen cabinets that go to the ceiling. Some things were just built better back then. 😁

The Enjo kitchen mitt works an absolute treat, and you don't need to use any solvents or cleaning fluids. I remember how shocked I was when I cleaned the top of the range hood with mine when I first bought it. Years of grease just wiped off with ease.

I have a dropped ceiling in the kitchen, the cabinets go all the way up to the real ceiling, so it's above my pay grade.
Actually I had to fire myself from cleaning my house. I don’t like my attitude, and I got caught drinking on the job.

I do not have empty space on top so I do not have to clean that area. However the top of my refrigerator is next to my stove and needs periodic cleaning (if I did it more it probably wouldn’t be so bad), I started putting a shelf liner on top so if it gets really bad I can just start again.
The front of my cabinets are painted and I am quite sure they are cheap cabinets so I try to be pretty careful with what I use. I have found a degreaser works better and I have some from Fuller Brush that I use just because I have it, I am not sure if there are better brands? Or I also use plain old dawn dish soap and water. I make sure I dry the cabinets after I wipe them down.
