My youngest DD and her fiancé (heeheeehee so excited) are going to Iceland next month and want to know if there's anything they shouldn't miss?
They hope to go to the black sand beach to take engagement photos, not professional just candids, and are excited. This is her first international trip and she doesn't want to miss anything, lol.
If you've been please tell me the good, the bad, and the absolutely don't miss!
Thank you

I loved Iceland but hated the food. It's very expensive so be prepared for that. I loved our day at the Blue Lagoon, but apparently there are other options for hot springs so I wouldn't miss that.

A friend of mine was just there and had an amazing time. Things are pricey (restaurant wise) but there is no tax or tipping, so compared to the tax & tipping here, they found it reasonable.
They said everything tends to close by 7pm so don't plan on late dinners. They got stuff at a store for breakfast in their room.
Rented a car and did their own thing!

Northern Lights, but I think that is a given... Hopefully they appear when they are there. I'm not much help!

The Golden Circle. It's incredible. I absolutely loved Iceland and would go back anytime. I'm a picky eater and I loved the food there. Reykjavik and Vik are great. It is expensive but worth it. Don't try the fermented shark !

I was just there this past summer during the midnight sunand absolutely loved it.My sister and I spent the first week on a horse farm with a group of women. We rode horses every day. But a lot of places you can go for just a trail ride. This place also had people come in for just that.
The second week, we rented a campervan and travelled right around the island. I would definitely suggest renting a vehicle. It is very easy to drive in Iceland. But we didn't go on any of the dirt roads. You would need a 4x4. You can rent them but they are more expensive. Because the sun never set, we had tons of time to explore.
I used Rick Steve's Iceland book to help with our itinerary. We took a anti-clockwise path on the Ring Road. We really like the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Near Skogafoss there is a glacier that you can get really close to called Sólheimajökull. After this, you get to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. After this we went to Fjaðrárgljúfur which is a canyon just off the highway. Then we went to Jökulsárlón which is the glacier lagoon with really nice icebergs. You can go in a boat or kayaking here. We got there too late in the evening but it was really spectacular to look at.
We then went up the East Fjords. Stokksnes at the beginning is a beautiful mountain at the beach. The Ring Road follows the fjords and the scenery is beautiful. We went up to Borgarfjarðarhöfn where you can be inches from a puffin colony. That was amazing.
In the north, we visited Godafoss, one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland and then the Myvatn Hevrir, a geothermal spot. Interesting but a terrible sulfur smell. We carried on to Dalvik where we caught a ferry in the morning to Grimsey Island. You can go to the island for a day trip or stay over at one of the 2 guesthouses. The island is filled with birds, puffins, terns and many others. It is also the only place in Iceland that is above the Arctic Circle. There is a marker at the north part of the island.
The last thing we did was visit the Snæfellsnes penninsula.
We then took a hop over to Denmark and visited Copenhagen and the island of Bornholm where our grandparents came from.
We really enjoyed Iceland. Now I have to take my husband.
The landscape was amazing and kept changing as we drove along.
We only ate out once because the horse farm we stayed at served all our meals (the owner's wife is from Chicago) and in the campervan, we just bought food from the grocery store.

Okay Karene , you've just talked me into going! Your trip sounds amazing. Although I am a lot closer to Antarctica than the Arctic, so I think it would take me a week in time and a month's salary to get there!

I did a 24-hour layover on my way to Copenhagen. I did do the Golden Circle tour, which I really enjoyed. Reykjavik is small (250,000-ish people) and you can do the sights in the city in half a day (I liked the food fine and thought it was comparable with other scandi countries in price); I’d love to go back, rent a car, and drive around more outside the city.
