If there is anything you should stop wearing after the age of 40, it’s other people’s opinions.

Do you read the comments on social media posts? Or do you just read the post and maybe the article and then move on? I like to read comments so I know what people are thinking, but the comments usually really stress me out because of so much BS and misinformation. But then I feel like I need to comment with accurate information to counteract the BS. It’s a vicious circle. Does anyone else have that problem or are you able to stay away from the comments? If you read them, what are your thoughts about society? If you don’t, any tips on avoiding the habit? I love the comment section, it's where some real gold is. But depending on how many comments, if there are zillions I'll eventually stop. But man, there are times I trip over myself to get to the comment section! LOL

I always read the comments, and these days I often wish that I hadn't. It's so depressing. I had no idea that there were so many crackpot batshit crazy cookers in the world, and I am shattered to learn that I walk amongst a shit ton of them here in Australia. I wish they'd all crawl back from where they came. They're now emboldened, and to some extent, I blame tRump and the MAGAts from the US.
If the orange menace wins, I think I will have to take an indefinite hiatus from social media.

In most cases no. I am more likely to read them on our community facebook page as I find those helpful and often I can contribute.
Other IG or FB posts, only if it's someone I personally know.

I agree that on tik tok there are some very funny and creative responses to non-political posts. I guess maybe I am referring more to anything news related or political.

If it stresses you out, don't read them. My tip is I do not see myself as the know-it-all responsible for providing accurate non bs information.

But if someone goes to the comments and only sees the BS/lies/conspiracy theories then I think people are more likely to believe it.

I tend to look in the comments hoping to find a voice of reason and compassion and humanity. More often than not, it’s a huge mistake. I tell myself I will spend less time on SM in general, and stop reading the comments, but I keep doing it. Ever hopefull, I guess.
On some Instagram and Reddit accounts, I do end up with some wholesome interchanges on particular subjects I find worthwhile, there is that.

Yes, I usually read the comments, especially if I doubt the validity of the post.

Those are the ones where the comments drive me the most batty, because so many people either completely do not get that this is a made up/contrived situation to generate views/comments, or it's people who are purposely stirring the pot to generate even more comments. Either way, they make me nuts, LOL!

I tend to look in the comments hoping to find a voice of reason and compassion and humanity. More often than not, it’s a huge mistake. I just saw a video where a woman was explaining how someone could work a Buy One Get One Free Deal along with WIC vouchers to get double the amount of product. Which is a great idea! *Except* I couldn't see well enough to notice the cereal was on sale, and so I was missing what was happening at first and went to the comments. Ugh. I did get my answer, but I had to wade through so many people who have no idea what WIC really is/how it works and/or those who think that just because someone has a certain appearance then they must be spending a fortune to achieve it. And then I remember why I try to stay out of the comments.

I ALWAYS read the comments otherwise what is the point of reading Social media posts ? It is interesting to read what others feel about subjects, Some comments are dumb but there are a lot more that are thoughtful & intelligent and very honest some which are very funny, We live in a time where We are slowly having our freedom of speech taken away from us by the nanny state & it is important that We have a right to comment on social media no matter how stupid they are I don’t really see how we are having our freedom of speech taken away. Can you elaborate? The more time goes on and I see more and more posts that are either bots or from people who are completely misinformed or just plain nasty, the more I think it should just be that people can’t make comments at all. I know that’s not really practical, particularly on tik tok or other people’s personal posts. But maybe the news posts no? I don’t know. I just think that overall it has probably done more harm than good. We have more access to accurate information and facts now but more misinformation because anyone can say anything and act like it is the truth. And people believe it. I am genuinely curious to know how you decide if someone is misinformed. People see things differently, interpret things differently.

Despite what some may try to tell you, facts are facts.

I'm not the person you quoted, but not all comments are presented as opinions. Plenty are presented as fact, and the facts are wrong. And there are opinions based on incorrect things as well. You know it because they mention incorrect facts in the midst of their opinion.

Not any more. I can’t tolerate comments anymore. Turns out there way more assholes in our society than I had thought. Literally every post ends up with a bs incorrect political comment on it.
Post about a deadly accident on a major highway, literally a fatal accident among various comments bashing one side or the other some asshat says something like it was probably Biden fell asleep at the wheel or slept Joe fell asleep commuting. WTF asshole peopke actually died in this accident it is not a joke for you to push your agenda. Stfu
A local restaurant closed - it those forced minimum wages ( this particular case the owners retired ) so blame the Dems.
My kid left their jacket at school but it’s not in the lost n found : Well talk to the governor it’s all those illegals he let in stole your kids jacket.
So on and so forth I just can’t take it. People are such assholes lately.
The accident I’ve really sent me over the edge because that is how my sister was killed and while this is a different accident it is not a joke. It’s not funny.
I can’t really understand where people common sense, kindness and empathy went.

I can’t really understand where people common sense, kindness and empathy went. Agreed. Those are good examples and I see comments like that all of the time as well. It’s bad enough on instagram or posts about things in the country at large, but on any online article that I see from the local paper there are the same ridiculous comments or people using the laughing emoji when it is a post about something positive in the community. It’s gross. I think some people truly don’t want the country (or the state, community, school district, etc) to succeed unless their side (usually Republican) is responsible for it. It’s gross. But it’s also a reflection of their party as a whole these days if you look at how Trump and other elected officials talk.

I love the comments. They are my favourite part. Me too. Sometimes I don't even read the article (especially if it has tons of ads) and just go to the comment section. I don't read a lot of political stuff on social media, though. Social media is my entertainment- once the Trump stuff starts, I stop reading the comments. But I belong to a lot of other type of pages (animals, art teachers, bad architecture, neighborhood nonsense, memes, etc.) and the comments are usually where the good stuff is.

I can’t really understand where people common sense, kindness and empathy went. I've seen all of those same kind of comments. And they are definitely part of why I stay out of the comments if I can. I absolutely believe that people often feel they can make nastier comments online than in real life. I also think people who are chronic complainers and general all around miserable humans, tend to flock to places they can spread their misery, and the internet is like their playground now. And on top of that, there are many reasons for kinder people to avoid commenting. So because of all of that, I think we get an unbalanced abundance of nastiness online. But unfortunately, I also think some people get used to spewing crap online, and have become more likely to start acting that way in the real world, too.
