I'm 49 and I've never heard of them.
Now I want donuts for breakfast! 😋

Heard of them but never had an official trademarked spudnut. I did grow up in a heavily German migrant community that had potato flour based pastries.

They seem familiar but I can't say I've ever tried one.

Yes! We used to go to the one on Venice Blvd. in west LA, the best donuts with chocolate and mini chocolate chips inside, decadent!

Idaho girl here, Spudnuts were the best treat in our potato farming area. While DH and I were lookouts on a mountain for the Forest Service, I made Spudnuts to have on hand when hikers made it to the top of the mountain. They would keep better than doughnuts and the hikers (usually Scout troops) loved them.

Yes, a Spudnut shop opened in my small hometown in western Washington in about 1962. They were delicious.

I don't know if it's still there now, but there used to be one of these near the marina in Oxnard, California where my husband and I used to stay sometimes when we were liveaboard cruising sailors. I never actually tried the Spudnuts, though.

Yes, my mom makes them. It’s been years, though!
ETA: I’m in Utah.

There was a Spudnut in West Seattle near the California Junction in the early 50's Which I really liked.
The story I read years later was, the originators had passed away with the recipie. I have read and heard so many stories and opinions about Spudnuts, it verifies my belief, history has been written by people who were never there.

We have Spudnuts here in Santa Barbara. They are a franchise, I’m pretty sure, because each store is very different. They are OK. I MUCH prefer Hook and Press Donuts, Bossie’s or Kin Bakeshop (which always has a line a mile long on the weekends). If you’re ever in SB, those are the places to go!

Yes! We have a few small family bakeries locally that make them once a week. They are lighter and fluffier than a traditional doughnut. We have a high Dutch population here that make them. A few of the bakers use a family recipe generations old brought over from Europe.

I grew up with Spudnuts and introduced the Frog (DH) to them the first year we were married. One of my favourite Halloween memories were Daddy's Spook Alley in the Living Room and Mom frying Spudnuts up in the Kitchen. The Tricky Treaters woulld make their choice watch it getting fried and glazed put in a wax paper bag to take home. Our Church always had a booth selling them at our town's annual Fall Festival to raise money for the building fund. I have the best Secret Recipe ever but it makes 12 dozen, takes all day and no matter how many have tried you can't cut it down and have them turn out. I used to make them up at Christmas for Neighbour Gifts but it is super hard without help.

Yes! The college I attended had them once a week in the dining hall for breakfast. I remember them as being super light and delicious. I loved them.

Not by that name, but yes! My mom used to make them all the time when we were growing up. Both she and my dad were of German heritage so I’m sure the recipe they used was passed down from someone in one of the families. They were really great the first day when they were hot and fresh, but not so much after that.
On a somewhat related potato note, my dad taught my mom how to make German potato dumplings and sauerkraut with spare ribs in the pressure cooker the way his mom made them. Apparently it took her some time to get the technique down just right to where the dumplings weren’t heavy and dense. We called them bullets, LOL. One of my brothers kind of learned how to make them but they weren’t as good as our mom’s.

I remember the Spudnut shop when I was a kid.
I have made homemade spudnuts and they are very good. I also make cinnamon rolls with mashed potatoes, but in all transparency - I only make Rhodes cinnamon rolls now. They are so stinkin' good and easy! I love all the Rhodes products!

We have...well HAD...a Spudnuts shop close by. They just shut down for good last month. The shop was there as long as I can remember... I think I read 60 years somewhere. They were good!
