We are still trying to finalize out bathroom repairs after both bathrooms were damaged by a leak in the upstairs bathroom. DH says that he just wants a shower in his bathroom, not a bathtub/shower combo. My sister says that she has just the shower base and uses a shower curtain with no problems with excess water getting out, but I want to hear from others. Is this a decent option or would we be better off getting a shower door?

So basically a doorless shower? My cousin has that, but they have the tile wall come out to about where the shower stream would fall. Others that I have seen have a short glass wall. As long as the shower stream is contained within the base of the shower it should be fine. But if the base is too narrow, there could be issue with the water spraying outside the shower. images.app.goo.gl/z3TvLMcv9cNqz6PQ6

I would go with a shower door.. shower curtains get moldy.. and harder to maintain.

When we moved into this house the shower had a glass door. When we remodeled that bath I did not replace the door.
Reason: The door kept the moisture in and mold and mildew was constant problem. I now have a plastic curtain. Walls no longer collect mold and mildew. If curtain starts to get yucky, it can be washed with towels or tossed out.

OP The 2 times I had water outside the shower was my fault for not paying attention when I pulled it closed and hat the bottom outside the stall.
I have learned to pay attention.

I would go with a shower door.. shower curtains get moldy.. and harder to maintain. It seems to me that a curtain would be easier maintenance than cleaning a shower door all of the time. Usually I just either replace the plastic liner or wash it if the inner liner is fabric. I also like that shower curtains can be decorative and hide the stuff inside the shower. But my husband has issues with water getting out even with a bathtub instead of just the pan, so I am worried that it would be even worse.

I've lived in my home 32 years and we have had one in the downstairs bathroom. No problem at all with water. We just make sure the shower rod is set low enough that the bottom of the curtain touches or almost touches the floor of the shower. We do put down a shower mat in front for when you step out of the shower, so if a few splashes of water do get through, I'm sure the mat takes care of that, but I've never noticed a really wet mat when stepping out.
I usually buy fairly inexpensive shower curtains, so I can change them out ever so often and not feel guilty if I toss them or recycle them in some manner.

well I recommend a strong fan.. I think it may depend on your climate then. I never get mold in my shower.

I’ve had a shower base with curtain for almost 30 years. Never have had any issues with wet floor or mould. I use Method shower spray once a month and throw the heavy vinyl curtain in the washer from time to time. I spent a good deal on that curtain and I’m guessing I’ll get another 15 or so years of use out of it.

My best friend did this when she remodeled as she was tired of cleaning glass shower doors and she has no regrets.

My mom took the shower door off her walk in shower (no tub) and uses a shower curtain. She’s never had issues with water getting outside the shower.

I think it depends on how many people are using that shower and how often. We had that setup before we tore down our cabin, but that shower wasn’t used frequently so it wasn’t ever a problem. A friend of mine has it in a bathroom at her retreat house where it’s used a lot by many people and the floor and mat in front of it are always wet to the point that she has multiple mats to change out daily so the wet ones can have a chance to get dry.

Just be sure the curtain goes all the way down and it should be fine

We just stayed in a air bnb with this combo and yes, there was water on the floor.
ETA: We are doing this to two bathroom and we will be putting in glass doors. They aren't used often, so cleaning won't be an issue.

When we remodeled a few years ago we thought about the shower curtain but ended up getting a frameless shower with a coating protective coating. Lst one taking the shower uses a squeeze and then a quick wipe with a towel. Once a month I spray a little windex and wipe clean. The bottom 2" get a bit spotty if I don't keep with drying the glass after a shower.

My sister took out the tub in the master bath and had the shower made larger, and uses a shower curtain rather than a glass door. It's never been a problem with water on the bathroom floor, and the shower curtain is so much easier to keep clean than a door--just toss in washer or buy new when needed. I find our glass door a PIA to keep clean, and we are considering re-doing using a curtain instead.

We have a walk-in shower with a shower curtain. I hated having doors that had to be cleaned. It is a lot easier to throw a liner in the washer once a month or so. Plus I love changing my shower curtains for the holidays
