there is a massive flood gate built in 1853 that protects the town of Lowell MA. when they improved and expanded a canal system..water used to power textile factories, they studied the hydrology of new hampshire and built the gate to protect the canals from floods and storms. it was used once in the 1850's, used to protected the city in the great 1935 hurricane, used in hurricane sandy and is still in place to prevent flooding in the future. it was one of the first. major hydrology studies.. the factory owners controlled most the water in new hampshire. good engineering never grows old

Wow. That's amazing. Being able to control where water goes after it overfills a containment area is so critical and it looks like not only was this constructed to do that well, but all of the generations since have not done anything to alter the water's course, which is also amazing to me.
