I would either mail it to SS, but more than likely, I'll take it to work and drop it in our shredder box.

But how exactly would you know for sure whether you found the right person? I wouldn’t want to risk giving something like that to the wrong person, and the police have a lot more resources to find them so I’d let them do the research. I’d also ask myself, “If I lost my Social Security card, what would I want someone finding it to do with it?” I don’t think I would want someone digging around online to find me. I would want them to send it to either the police or the SSA. But that’s just me. 🤷🏻♀️ Like other places that verify a person. Ask them for the last 4 numbers of their Social. I was just thinking if it was my kid who lost it, she honestly wouldn’t know and neither would I. I know my own and DH’s but I don’t have hers memorized.

I’d mail it here, with no return address.

I know my own and DH’s but I don’t have hers memorized. I would think that would be a very slim chance that a child's parent would not have the SS # somewhere like on a tax return.
