I like to revisit this subject every once in awhile...
What is trending now besides mushrooms? I mentioned roller skates last time and I'm still finding them. Are gnomes on their way out?
What icons never seem to go away?
Some icons that never go away and I can't figure out why: cassette tapes and typewriters. I know retro is in, and I like retro and have used both, but there are just so many of them still. Hot air balloons is another one that bugs me. I didn't like it 15 years ago when it was everywhere and now I'm still finding it popping up in collections. Why do I need a hot air balloon?

Why does every bicycle have to have a basket full of flowers on it? Or maybe a bike that isn't from 1972.

Skulls, but it might be the season Halloween/ Dia de los Muertos though.
Flowers. I think I saw one line had a typewriter with flowers coming out of it. If Santa starts carrying a bouquet...
I like typewriters because I write (and sometime type on mine) but I can get how other people wouldn't like them and it's over used.

I have a half finished layout on my desk right now. I put a typewriter on it and it works! I feel like someone should give me a high five for using a typewriter.

I feel like a lot of collections have campers.
I agree about hot air balloons - I couldn't stand them then, can't stand them now.

The retro VW bus for summer collections I hate this one. I have no use for a retro VW bus. I throw them away now if they are in ephemera packs.

Trends include feminine aesthetic, butterflies, vintage imagery/colors, retro icons/colors, bookshelves, mushrooms, odd yellows (e.g. mustard, neon) in color palettes, floating icon patterns, strongly themed collections, & IMHO the biggest offender: oversaturation of florals.

I don't mind the mushrooms but I do wonder who decides this stuff. Hot air balloons are beautiful but I wouldn't use one unless it was on a l/o about hot air ballooning. The typewriters are still something I like, although I guess they're not that relative these days but I will use them. At least we've gotten away from that awful chandelier thing from years past! Good question artbabe. And kimba, totally agree about the bicycle with the flowers. I used to ride bicycles a lot when I was younger and I don't think I ever carried flowers in the basket.

Shhh, they might hear you! they're probably working on bringing those back as we speak. Maybe along with disembodied mustaches!

Your comment just reminded me of one of my favorite "girl" movies, Return to Me. Minnie Driver rides a bicycle as her form of transportation and her character seems like she would have flowers in her basket.

I’m still seeing those big clocks, generic tickets, and that stupid pickup truck with a truck bed filled with whatever seasonal stuff. Summer season you get flamingos. Anyone got those in their back yard? Thought not.
My biggest ‘thank goodness this trend is over’ was doodling. I absolutely hated that. At first people did their own onto their layouts then companies were pre-doodled paper. They even had how to classes.

Actually yes, my neighbor keeps adding random flamingos and painted gnomes in our semi-shared yard I never know when a new one will pop up! I bought two skeletons at Target last month. I plan to zip tie them to the backs of some yard decor flamingos (I need to buy those first) and decorate them for the season. I am not that creative, I saw the idea online somewhere... I will at least use one or two flamingo stickers/die cuts making a page about them

I am not really affected by the icons as much as the colors. For some reason, those colors from the 60's and 70's give me a negative reaction. I rarely can find a use for cassettes, mustaches and haunted house type chandeliers. The hot air balloons don't bother me. I like the idea of the possibilities of hot air balloons. I also live in a city that I see those balloons for months from my bathroom window or driving down the mountain. Would love to take a ride in one.
I generally use icons that match my photos, but I do see flamingos in yards (cuz that is normal for Colorado) and when I drive to Denver, there are those red trucks filled with seasonal decorations in front of all of the small farms and properties up the highway.
I think people should use those goofy icons on a page that highlights yourself as a scrapper. I could see making some fun of them and using them as well.

A cluster with a chandelier, mustache, llama, tiger, hot air balloon, lemonade stand, yeti, VW bus, mushroom, and PINK florals - people looking at the page would be so confused! But I think it could be really fun.

Scrappers don't often put themselves as the subject, so it could have some weird possibilities.

I’ll take all of your florals…just flowers and leaves though, not coming out of random things. I don’t even care for plants/flowers in pots. I actually get disappointed if a collection doesn’t have a full pack of just floral die cuts. I buy those in multiples.

Give me all of the flowers and leaves, and I doodle…mostly just lines around tags/photo mats, but sometimes I do little doodles x’s that look like stitches. I don’t scrap super themey. I rarely use an icon that is the same as something in my photos.

I prefer very non-themed, generic things like dots, dashes, arrows, stars, OR to go the opposite direction and have my embellishments definitely match the theme of the photos. I bought a page of fall paper this year specifically to cut out the chipmunks to make my own embellishments for some chipmunk photos I took this year, for instance.
