Do you have to take it forever or can you taper off? Were you able to keep the weight off or did you gain it back, cravings, side effects, etc.

My experience: I need it. I will continue to use it as long as I can get it and afford it. I tapered myself to the lowest dose, bc larger doses were actually too much and I was getting too thin. But without it, the cravings start to return and I'm off the rails thinking about sugar and fat and food and I also start having hot flashes again.
The minimum dose is perfect for me. I maintain my weight without having to make any effort, I feel good, and whatever my metabolism issues are are fixed.

I am currently on Wegovy and my insurance has classified it as a Tier 3 drug, so it will cost me $600 out of pocket, and that is unaffordable to me.

I asked my GP if I could take it and she was all it’s $200 a month without insurance and I don’t need it for significant weight loss and that I would need to take it forever. For $200 I would take it but I have to use Metformin for months and prove that doesn’t work. I didn’t want to do that. I could get a compounded formula. That is something I am considering.

I went off it, but not because I reached my goal weight but due to side effects. I didn’t put on a lot of weight, but I hadn’t lost a lot while on it either. I have now started Mounjaro, on the lowest dose - I’ve just had 2 injections so far. We’ll see how that goes. I am already noticing a difference in appetite and blood sugar levels, so I’m hoping I tolerate it better.

My dr said thar 2/3 of people will gain the weight back (and more). She said you have to looknat it as a treatment for a chronic condition. When you cholesterol is under control, you dont stop the meds; when your bp is under control, you dont stop the meds. It is no different with these treatments for a chronic condition. She also said there is a massive class action lawsuit against insurance companies for denying payment for these medications. Hopefully that gets through the courts quickly and everyone can get the treatment they need.

I took Wegovy. My Dr. told me when my insurance stopped covering it because it wasn't working for me that it was okay to just stop. The medicine naturally tapers itself off from week to week anyway. She also told me that whether or not you have to take it forever depends on the person. Some people do and some people don't. Had it worked for me and I'd reached my goal weight, we would have begun backing off the dose (much like when you start, but in reverse) to see if I started gaining again. If I didn't then eventually I could come off of it. But if I did, I would just continue to take it.

My breast surgeon says my odds cancer recurrence are lower if I lose weight. I have had problems with insulin resistance and I hardly eat anything but still have trouble losing weight. I want to fix my metabolism and get to a healthier weight, but I don't want to be tied to this forever.

I have insulin resistance and have no problem with the idea that this is something I need forever in order to control my weight and health. It makes it easy for me now, I no longer struggle and can focus on other things! My only wish was that it was more affordable. Once they are able to shut down the compounding pharmacy versions, I'll be back to Square One. 😭

I will be stopping Mounjaro soon. I am diagnosed diabetic so with our previous insurance coverage I paid nothing for it. After my husband was laid off from his job of 36 years we're now on Gov-funded insurance. All of the deductibles are high (currently $8000). While my new insurance (Regence) covers Mounjaro, I have to meet my deductible first. Eli Lilly put a coupon down making my last fill $475 (normal cost is $1200/mo). This is out of my budget so I have a telehealth appt tomorrow to get on something else - hopefully not back to Metformin, but I expect that's what it will be, which won't cost me anything at least. While I haven't lost weight with it, my A1C is the best its ever been. I love that it's once a week and forget it. Metformin will be two pills twice a day before I eat and if I'm not very hungry and don't eat much I then get diarrhea. I'm very disappointed. I've had zero side effects with Mounjaro. I really wish I would have lost weight over the two years I've been on it. I exercise 90 min most days and eat very well - I just don't lose weight.
