My family had cats when I was a child and we lived in Southern California. Then we moved to Northern California and my Mom and are allergic to cats now. We tried a dog briefly when I was a teen, but it didn't work out and we gave him to a friend. DH's family always had dogs and cats. We had no animals (except a bird and fish) when the kids were growing up. Then DS moved out and adopted a small dog before asking his landlord permission. The dog came to live with DH and I temporarily for a month, which turned into twelve years! I wasn't allergic to him as he had very little hair. We ended up getting a second small dog years later. We are now a dog only family for sure.

I am a dog person. My best friend growing up had a cat that was very mean and antisocial. He made me really despise cats. I am also allergic to cats and the allergies have gotten worse as I've gotten older.
We have a "hypoallergenic" dog - I know no dog is 100%, but he really doesn't shed or bother my allergies. DS and his GF live in an apartment and she wanted a pet, and he is not a cat person, but that is all they are allowed to have. She talked him into it and he is now totally into that cat. When I go over, I have to take allergy medicine, eye drops and nose spray. Their cat is the sweetest and I really wish I could hold it!
But, besides the allergy, the other thing that grosses me out is that cats walk all over in their litter box and get the "bathroom germs" on their feet and then walk all over the furniture, beds, etc. Yuk! They are pretty cute though!
My dream dog would be a golden retriever, but I could never handle all that hair. I'd love a golden doodle or labradoodle someday if I could get one with curly hair that doesn't shed a lot.

Both! I’ve always had both. At the moment I have 2 dogs and an undisclosed number of cats. Noneya.
I’d have a water buffalo if I could, give me allll the pets.

i am 100% dog person. I’m allergic to cats but over the years a few barn cats have found me that i didn’t hate having around. This is my rescue pup Wyatt. I love cream chows, he is my second. He’s two, and has been a handful due to things he experienced as a puppy. I love him and while it’s not quite yet my dream - i’m in it for the long haul.

Definitely dogs, the bigger and shaggier the better! We looked after DS's friend's cat a couple of years ago, and while it was a very attractive animal, I hated how it just climbed wherever it wanted. My ideal dog would be an Irish Wolfhound, but I couldn’t afford to feed one, let alone buy it and insure it! I met a beautiful one in the summer, whose brother was the mascot of the Irish Guards. His name was Dobby, and he ate 60kg of dry food every month.

100% cat person here. I've met dogs that were very sweet but in general I'm not a fan - gotten bitten a few too many times to be very comfortable around dogs.
Right now we have four:
Mini is 14.5 and a black/white tuxedo and rather fluffy for a short-hair
Dorian is 7 and a grey tabby - he's rather rotund
PadBear is 3.5 and an orange tabby with cream paws and underbelly - she's a sturdy girl and is devoted to DH
Dusty is also 3.5 (3 weeks younger than Pad but we've had him longer - he came home as an 8oz 5week old) - he's a grey tabby but darker than Dorian and on the petite side. He's super sweet and cuddly.
DD24 is currently visiting with the two cats that she and DS33 share.
Chai is 2.5 and a calico tabby with the most beautiful orange swirls on her side. She's a sweet cuddly girl.
Thumper is 1 and a brown tabby bobtail and 100% mischief - he's a lot of fun and very cute...which helps since he's not very good

I am a cat person and have five of them, but my dog is my girl and I love her in a different way. She's like a best friend. They're like roommates. ETA: like roommates I'm besotted with. I'm powerless over their cute.

Dogs! Sight hounds specifically Whippets and Greyhounds - see avatar. Nothing against cats but have parrots and macaws, so not a good or safe mix for either.
Currently have a twelve year old Whippet and 8 Year old Greyhound. They rarely bark, Whippet is very smart and very little hair shedding.

I've had both and while I do love a friendly kitty, they just can't hold a candle to the companionship of a dog. I would say that cats are easier though.

I grew up with both dogs and cats; so, I love both. Currently, I live with Bailey, a five-year-old Siamese.

I love all animals! Raccoon wasn't a choice on the poll, but I'd love one to raise one from a baby - that's just a fantasy though. I have 2 inside only cats. One is an orange tabby girl(Kitty) that is 15 years old, and the other is a solid black boy (BooBoo) that is 10 years old. I would love to have a dog, but with my health issues it would be difficult to take care of him properly. Also, I like to travel and that would be an added difficulty with a dog.

Dog! Myself and 2 of my kids are highly allergic to cats, and allergic to dog fur. We had 2 Lhasas, but since 2017 have been without any pets. We recently got a Tibetan Terrier puppy, cousin breed to the Lhasa. He will get to about 28/30 lbs and currently is 4 months and 19 lbs.

I've never had a dog. I was bitten as a young child and grew up afraid of dogs. I am comfortable with dogs as long as the owner is there and the dog isn't aggressive. I've come to like being around many dogs. BFF had a dog I loved.
I had cats from junior high until last year. I may someday get another cat but I'd like more of a house cat if we do. Our most perfect cat was an indoor outdoor who rarely scratched anything and didn't jump up on counters or anything else.
I like cats because they are so self-sufficient and typically very neat. Our last cat was not the neatest and he had to become an outdoor only.

I'm a dog person all day.
There have been a few cats that I've met that I've really liked. Typically those cats have acted like dogs though
DH and I are both allergic to cats so they're not an option, but even if we weren't allergic, we'd chose a dog over a cat no question.

Cat person here. Our cats are mostly sweet, some can be neurotic but still seem easier to care for and don't annoy the neighbors like our new neighbors dog who howls incessantly. DS and I are going to the pound today to get a cat to give us something joyful after today's news. He had to leave his two cats behind when he moved home from an abusive relationship. He asked if we could get another cat (we have two already) but I've been trying to hold off until he gets a job.
I don't dislike dogs I just haven't been around them much. We always had cats growing up. My dad did have two dogs for awhile when I was a teenager but as I didn't live with him I only had small interactions. That said one of the dogs was technically a "foster" (weirdly the owner was Kirk Cameron who asked my dad to foster the dog and then never came back for it) and not well-behaved at all.

I voted both. I have no preference. I love both cats and dogs.
We currently have 8 cats and 3 dogs. The latest dog is a rescue that we've had two weeks. He is 6 months old and was born in the pound and lived there 5 1/2 months. I'm not sure what I was thinking with a puppy. My other two are both 10 years old. Life is absolute chaos at the moment. We think he is kelpie/german shepherd. He's picking things up really quickly. He's very clever but also exceptionally active.
