Yesterday after work, I took my dog Boris, a cavoodle, for a walk around the lake. This particular park has signs advising that dogs are to be on their lead (leash) at all times. As we were walking along the path, I could hear some dogs splashing in the water. I should point out that I have taken my dog off the lead in that little area before for a quick paddle, if there are no other dogs around. As I walked around the corner, I saw a young couple with two big Alsatians, and the dogs were having a ball jumping into the water. I said "They look like they're having a great time!" No sooner were the words out of my mouth, than one of the dogs rushed us and grabbed my little boy in his jaws. It all happened so quickly, all I can remember is seeing these teeth around my dog's body. (My heart is beating a hundred miles an hour just writing this!) The owners were yelling at their dog, and the dog thank goodness let go of Boris, and I grabbed him into my arms. I started yelling and swearing at them, I think I dropped every expletive you could imagine, and I was yelling so loudly the whole neighbourhood must have heard. The girl asked if my dog was okay, but I was so angry I couldn't answer. I just told her that I was taking their photo "in case anything happens." I think that's what I said. We walked off, both of us shaking like crazy. I took him straight home, and he seemed to be okay, he wasn't limping or anything. After we got home I noticed that he had blood on his front leg from the bite. We bathed him and bandaged his leg, and DSO took him to the vet today. They gave us antibiotics and pain relief, and a solution to bathe his leg with. I would love to pass the $160 bill onto the owners if I knew where to find them! I know that this could have been so much worse, had the dog not let go when he did. I feel very lucky that Boris wasn't more badly injured, or worse. And imagine if it had been a young child?! Please people, keep your dogs on the lead if you are not able to control them! I think that I am going to report the incident to the local council. Not sure what they can do without knowing who the owners / dogs are, but I will report it anyway. Here's my boy tonight, looking all sad and forlorn on the floor. At least his tail was wagging like crazy when I lay down to take the photo.

Boris is beautiful! What a horrible shock for you both, I’m really glad it wasn’t worse.
Please do report it. We have dog wardens we’d report to; it could be that that dog has done it before and if not, it will at least go on record incase there’s future attacks. I say it needs reporting as a life long owner of GSDs, I’m not irrationally against that breed.
Best wishes to Boris for his healing, you will both be anxious going out for a while.

Report it.
German shepherds while very beloved and loyal are not an easy breed and are generally known to be "handle with caution" at vets. While the Malinois has the cousin-on-crack reputation, the more mellow GSD can bite out of nowhere. Vets tend to be extra cautious around them. And the GSD community is often up in arms about the vets being careful even if the vet is a GSd owner themselves. 🤷
They were bred to herd sheep (and nip at them if the sheep don't act "accordingly") and are very protective. Your dog was probably mistaken for an intruder or a sheep that needed to be put in its place.
Report it. Even if the dog thankfully had good recall, they attacked your dog and were unleashed. You were fortunate to walk away with seemingly very little physical damage. The GSD owner should have to pay for your check-up at the vet, by the way.

I love Boris! Glad he’s OK and I bet if you describe the dogs to your local authorities, they’re going to know who the owners are. They need to pay you for his vet bills.

Oh, isn’t he a cutie! What a scary thing to happen! Unruly and biting dogs are one of my biggest pet peeves. No pun intended. More like I can’t stand it keep them leashed and controlled

I'm so sorry!!! That is horrible. Boris is adorable.. what a cutie...
(I don't want to make it about me, but I know how horrible it is to watch something like that.. it happened to our dog and not the same outcome... even now it is painful to think about but we love the memories we had with our dog)

Poor Boris. Glad he (and you) are OK.
We were involved in a dog altercation (our dog was not harmed, just frightened). After he was very scared at that area. My trainer suggested when we get to that part of our walk give him a "jackpot of treats" to let him know that good things (good doggy praise and cheese) happen there. It took a few times but now he's good through that area.

Oh, Boris is so beautiful and that photo is just heartbreaking. The other dog owners should pay the bill. If you can find them I would do so. I'm sorry that your little guy was traumatized, as were you. ((((HUGS)))).

How scary for you. Definitely report it. I assume you've told your vet the whole story? Keep an eye on your baby, you don't know the other dog, so you don't know about the vaccine status of anything... I have both a Cavalier, and a German Shepherd... This hits close to home. We rarely take our GS out on walks, he has a big yard to burn energy in. I'm always afraid something would happen. But he's the BEST dog in the house!

Poor thing. I’m glad Boris is not badly injured or worse. I’m sorry that happened to you.
This summer, our neighbor's German Shepherd jumped his fence and started attacking Orla, our female golden retriever, up on our deck. Before he could get ahold of her, she ran whimpering down the stairs and he pursued. I chased them and somehow steered Orla into my car and slammed the door. I grabbed the neighbor’s dog and put a leash on him and marched him home. He apparently doesn’t mind people, just other dogs. Still terrifying and heartbreaking to see your baby so scared.

I just now learned that an Alsatian is a German Shepherd.
You learn something new every day!
Again, glad your dog is ok

AussieMeg I'm so glad your beautiful Boris wasn't seriously injured. I'm so upset with dog owners that let their dogs off the lead when they don't have recall. It's so scary. My golden has been attacked a couple of times. I now carry compressed air, an air horn and a mini umbrella and red pepper spray in a bag around my waist. I have used the air and umbrella with loose dogs. peano I hope the neighbor will do something about their dog so he won't come in your yard again. Your poor puppy.

Oh my goodness, poor Boris and poor you!
That sounds really awful, and I'd have been dropping every expletive I've ever heard too!
Definitely report it - here I'd be reporting it to our local authority (city council).

I'm so sorry poor both you and poor Boris experienced this and would definitely report it.
We'd only had our pup, Bella, for a few weeks (she was 2) when she was attacked by a Boxer Chow. I too screamed all the words and did bring the neighbors out. Long story short, the owner gave me a ride home, came by to check on her the next day and paid the $1000 vet bill.
