Trump promised several things about education (some in his platform; other in his "weaves.") Regardless of your vote, parents should be aware.
- Cut all Federal education funds to states with vaccine mandates and in states with "woke" (his words) curriculum. This means no $$ for Special Ed or student loans and a variety of other programs.
- Cut Federal education funds by half.
- Cut all Federal education funds and give that money to the States with no strings.
- Overturn Biden's Title IX regs on LGBQT students.
- Eliminate Dept of Ed

Parents should be worried about the threat to special education funding. It doesn’t matter that you have a child who doesn’t need special education. Your child still benefits! Without special Ed funding the classroom teacher will be further divided trying to meet the needs of all students. And honestly if your kid falls in the top middle half academically, they will not get as much attention as the teacher struggles to deal with the academic, emotional and educational needs of those who need special education services. All students benefit from special education. That may soon be gone.

The DoE does that enforcement. States like mine have routinely been sued for failing to follow federal education law, which tells me that if no one is enforcing the law, many anti-education red states will turn a blind eye to kids having their special needs ignored in public school.

We tried to talk our daughter out of being an education major and she’ll be graduating in the spring. I am going to highly suggest that she look into all of her options of what she can do. I will be surprised if they don’t come after schools right away.

I will be surprised if they don’t come after schools right away. I think if she focuses her job search in states that value public education and fund it well, she'll be fine for several years at least. Private schools are also an option and the higher end ones in big cities do pay well. That said, once she gets about 10-15 years in, she's going to reach the point where she's maybe not so enchanted with her job any more, but she's making enough that it would be a pay cut to start over again in another career. So if she has any ideas about going to grad school for another pursuit, don't put that off too long.

This country sold out so many people. I hope those false promises of cheaper gas and groceries prices make them happy as schools are forced to be shut down due to lack of funds. Good luck to those in rural areas who will have to bus their kids for long distances because there just aren't the funds to keep a local school open.

I posted this on one of the other threads, but I am really concerned about this.
All the kids I tutor either have a 504 or an IEP. Every single one of them, 2nd-11th grade, has had multiple issues with schools and/or teachers providing accommodations and/or services that they are legally entitled to for their various needs. And I live in a blue part of Oregon. Two of the families have had to get lawyers involved to get things in place. And I am not talking about extreme things. I am talking like, providing extra time for kids with ADHD and having a space where a dyslexic student can have a quiet place to do speech to text for writing. We decided I would leave the classroom when our own DD was diagnosed with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD in 3rd grade and it was clear that they wanted to lay the blame at the feet of the 8 year old by calling her lazy. It is nothing but straight out privilege that we could adjust to one income so I could teach our child. And she is better for it. But how many kids are sitting in classrooms everyday who don't have a parent in my position? Millions of them. 1 in 5 has dyslexia. And dismantling the Dept of Ed and leaving it up to the states is a disaster waiting to happen for any kind of progress.
I remember in 2001, I had just entered the classroom and No Child Left Behind because a thing. Reading, Math, and Science were the subjects that had required testing. Social Studies had an optional test but I don't think my state ever did it. And I remember, even in my youth, thinking..."What in the world is going to happen if we become all about testing and teach to the test and there's no social studies test?" Well, you know what happened? Teaching social studies went on the back burner. Sure, it was still required for graduation and was in the standards but that was the beginning of the end of history not being taught anymore. And here we are.

Maga is not interested in education for the masses, meaning us. They prefer the uneducated, easier to manipulate. Some states, Arkansas for sure, have changed their child labor laws to allow kids to work many more hours in questionable circumstances. 14-15 year olds serving alcohol, working in meat packing plants which are both dangerous jobs.
They will choose who will attend what schools and where. Think eastern Europe, kids, as well as China, chosen for specific careers as their abilities are screened. They have been doing that for years..
Curriculum taken from Bibles teaching their form christianity regardless of parental choices! Higher education will only be for the chosen. There will be no liberal arts or random learning. Toe the line will be the goal. Enjoy..

I am so glad that I’m retired. I suspect that there will be a teacher shortage in red states. More private and religious schools, where the pay is craptastic.

As a special ed para in an elementary school, I'm really worried. I'm currently taking classes to get a teaching certification and starting to question the wisdom of that plan. My middle ds just started working in the admissions office at the Milton Hershey in Pennsylvania, a private residential school for low income families. I'm worried about his future career path. Youngest ds will be starting at Embry Riddle in Florida next fall. I was already worried about DeSantis and Florida in general. If he was planning to study anything other than aviation, I think we would reconsider. Unfortunately, there are not many options and Embry Riddle is really the best choice for him.
