Hi peas! I'm interested in hearing any recommendations for a sewing machine to use for scrapbook layouts and cards. e.g. attaching thick or thin paper elements, plastic pieces, potentially making felt embellishments, etc.. Easy to use and not too large would be a plus, but not a deal breaker. I don't need a ton of stitch options. Please let me know if you like yours and any pros/cons (and ideally if it is still for sale!)
Also - I've heard some scrapbookers say they have one dedicated to papercrafting as well as one reserved for sewing. Is that because it damages the needle or other damage, or was it just personal preference not to mix the two? Just curious if you can use for both and if not, why not. I'm a newbie, just want to avoid breaking anything lol.
Thank you!

Sewing machines have drastic price ranges. Most any inexpensive machine will work. Sewing machine needles vary in size and are not expensive.

I just have a basic Singer machine from Costco. I don’t sew fabric much beyond pillows and pj pants, so I just have a dedicated paper needle.

I believe it's the same reason as having fabric only scissors. Paper dulls scissors & needles.

The paper dulls the needle and don’t want to use it on my fabric. I do the same with scissors. Fabric scissors never cut paper.

I have a Janome Derby line for using only on paper. There's the thing about needles dulling, paper pieces/shreds getting into machine, but also it's a smaller footprint than my regular janome and easier to access for projects. I know I got it on sale a long time ago, so only paid $40-50. I use the needle that came with machine. www.janome.com/derby

Is that because it damages the needle or other damage I like never change my needle unless it breaks. Don't tell! I have a very nice husqvarna that has some embroidery stitches that I haven't used since my high schooler was in daycare. But I use it for everything. Paper, plastic, fabric, whatever. There is a woman at work who quilts. I asked her if I should get my machine serviced and asked, what like every 10 years. She looked at me in horror as she gets her machine serviced every year. It was so funny.

My recommendation would be a size 80/10 microtex sharp needle from Schmitz. These sharp pointed needles will go through paper easily. Also when you sew on paper consider the stitch length.

I have the Janome sew mini...its small and has a designated space so i use it more frequently. I've had it for about ten years and the machine & needle still works fine.

I have one machine I use for sewing and scrapbooking. Most of the fabric sewing I do is to do clothing repairs and hems. I got a new Singer Stylist about 5 years ago and will have to say it does not sew as well on fabric or paper as my old Kenmore that I had for 40 years, but you know, new products are just not as durable and high quality as things made back in the 80's. But the Singer Stlylist 7258 is adequate.
