What is going to stop him from doing anything he wants? If he has the house and the senate, there are NO guardrails. MAGA will be assuming the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Please enlighten me, who or what is going to stop him for anything? That's the difference between me and you, I don't believe they are empty promises from him. The red bolded part. PLEASE, someone explain how he won't be able to do whatever the heck he wants to. I am being 100% serious. There is pretty much nothing to stop him (unless somehow some republicans dare to vote against his wishes) for at least the next 2 years. I am not being argumentative, I promise. But I think that anyone who doesn't realize what is very likely to happen just is burying their head in the sand. I also would like to remind people that a LOT of us vote due to the difference in views on the most fundamental of social issues. I feel like there are many people who are like "if this doesn't touch our lives, it really isn't a concern" thing. I want everyone in this country treated equally, or as close to that as we can get. That will not happen under the upcoming administration. I completely agree. Not long ago when people from his administration were speaking out about Trump being a fascist, one of them (maybe Kelly? I am not 100% sure) said that they were on a flight to a NATO summit and Trump said, "Maybe we should just make history and pull out of NATO today." The person he was with talked him out of it. That person won't be there this time.

fake news!!! (it has to be fake; everything negative towards him / Rs MUST be a pack of lies, right?!?) /s This is what is killing me. With all the time we spend on our phones, no one spends the time researching things. I try to talk to my brother or mom and when I give them a well reasoned argument, they either 1. Say they don't believe it. What?!? What about an easily proven fact (Trump tried to do away with the ACA his first term) don't you believe? It is a FACT! or 2. Throw out other, unrelated argument is that are easily disproved. My brother just tried to tell me Kim Jong Un was scared of Trump and never fired a single missile when he was president. Seriously, vote for whoever you want, but at least educate yourself. He also thought China pays the tariffs. Also, don't try to wrap your argument around God and say you prayed on it. At least be honest and say you placed the thought of worldly goods over morals and the wellbeing of others.

I am circling back to this thread because I'm peeved and honestly believe some peas have forgotten that the US has 3 distinct branches, and the reason for them:The Constitution of the United States divides the federal government into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. This ensures that no individual or group will have too much power.1. Executive - the President-elect 2. Judicial - in the President-elect's back pocket. 3. Legislative - Congress, more than likely will be Republican controlled. Senate is Republican. The house is likely to go Republican as well. And there you have it. If that happens, there are no more checks or balances. NONE. Anything and everything the president-elect has threatened/promised will likely come true. Everything that happens in (at least the next 2 years) will ALL be at Republican's hands. Any social safety nets, humanitarian, educational, support for the arts, etc. will be on the chopping block. Don't forget the "tens of millions" of immigrants that are going to be "rounded up and deported." What happens when YOUR child/grandchild/neighbor comes out as trans or gay. Will that make any difference? Or someone in your family marries an immigrant from South America? And they are sent back, but the child she had and her husband stay here? I mean seriously. Holy heck. How about when your pool guy/gardener/housekeeper/produce pickers/famr hands are deported. Do you think you can get an American born person to do these tasks at the same rate of pay? I have voted for republicans and democrats. I think it’s a good thing to have a mix of both. What irks me is the lack of acceptance from both sides. Most citizens are in capable of compromise. Sometimes you win sometimes they win. I remain open minded. This board is not. Here and in many parts of our country are people with different opinions different from your own are labeled as garbage, deplorable. Leftist are labeled power hungry, incompetent. How in the world can we live in harmony? We can even have a civil debate without feeling attacked. Where has respect for others opinion gone? How can anyone understand stand a persons opinion by degrading them personally? I’ve tried here and in real life to gain insight to why people feel a certain way only to be degraded. By both Republican and Democrats. When people, of both parties , have chosen a candidate that best represent their beliefs. It’s childish to start calling each other names. Calling an opponents supporter names diminish their credibility. We look like fools to the rest of the world. How can we understand another country’s position from their point of view when we can’t even have a civil discussion with each other? Just because you don’t agree with their position doesn’t give you the right to denigrate each other. It’s not one party who is to blame. Both parties are disgraceful and incapable of compromise. I don’t usually complain and not offer a solution. My solution is let’s evoke term limits. No one should be in a position of influence for 50 years. Our current political parties are both guilty. You can’t convince me that someone who pulls in millions of dollars by being a politician understands what the majority of voters are experiencing. Privileged politicians are incapable of giving up power. They show very little empathy to anyone who has a different idea. They make laws and then exempt them selves. I feel so aggravated that my fellow citizens are literally feel like killing themselves because of an outcome they didn’t identify with. Celebrities throw up their hands I’ll move out of the US if so and so wins. Really! Instead understanding someone else’s choice to go in a different direction, they stop their feet in a tantrum. Then we wonder why we are in the position we are in. News flash not everyone is going to share your opinion! We fought for the right to speak freely regardless of what or who you identify with. People who have resources and access to media should be held to the highest standard. They have the ability to speak to the masses. Shouldn’t they speak respectfully? Never mind the fact that Kathy Griffen held a severed head that look like Trump. We as a nation should have come out in mass to call her out on that. However She did the right to do so, having the right to is one thing expressing death to someone is not. Both parties should have expressed that was too far. Democrat supporters said he needs to be taken out. Too bad the person who attempted to kill Trump wasn’t a better shot. Some of them hold high positions in the government. They literally express that in their minds people should kill a candidate. Then we are shocked that someone would try to kill him. They admittedly said ok we need to “cool off” Only a few months later to call him a Natzi and degrade any supporter of his. I for one loved Michelle Obama said “when they go low we go high”. Why didn’t we follow her example? I was rooting for Harris to win. I prayed that with her in the highest position in our country we would see a kinder gentler leader. Why didn’t she win? I for one thought she would. In talking to friends they expressed. Maybe voters would have been more inclined to vote for her if she had more time to prepare. Maybe If she would have admitted that the current administration could have made better policies for our economy. You know take responsibility. She’s not the only one who have gotten us in this position. But admitting things could be handled better, she would have become relatable. We all make mistakes. What are we teaching our kids? When things don’t go your way move to another country? We had a school who offered kids Wednesday off to help them cope. Ok, I understand kids are affected. How about encouraging them to try to understand someone else’s opinion? Get evolved! I agree with a lot of what you are saying. Bolding one comment to answer for myself. I can't speak for everyone. I can agree to disagree. Bush Vs Gore, Obama Vs McCain, I could have discussed openly with differing opinions. I did not think less than for anyone who voted for either candidate. But things such as racism, misogyny and homophobia aren't agree to disagree issues for me. If a candidate is running on a platform filled with racism, misogyny and homophobia, I condemn it and call it what it is. There is no open dialogue with hate speech. And hell no I'm not leaving my country. I don't understand people saying they want to leave. Like stay and fight for change, damn it! Agreed. It would be nice if we could get back to where we could talk about an issue without it being turned into an us vs them situation, but that is honestly what narcissists like Trump do. For example...Covid should have been a unifying event. Covid should have been the enemy, not each other. But that is not how Trump works. We could all agree that something needs to be done about immigration...but when one side is referring to all immigrants as criminals, eating the pets of people who live here, thieves, from insane asylums and pieces of shit, we get stuck at trying to defend the rights and humanity of those people rather than actually solving the problem. Then you have Republicans blocking Democrats bills for the last decade or more because they don't want Democrats to have a "win." NOW they are talking about getting things done because they will have the trifecta. It's maddening.

I appreciate you owning your vote.
Here's why I do not respect it. We have different values. When we vote for a candidate, we vote for who they are, their positions, and what they say and do.
No candidate is perfect. They say stupid things, do stupid things, etc.
But Trump stands alone. He mocked a tortured POW, encouraged his crowd to laugh at Mr. Pelosi's horrific injuries. He laughed at the idea that he would assault a women because he "wasn't' her type." He threatened journalists, CBS news' license, people. who donated to Harris, with jail time. This doesn't touch his policy positions.
So, I am the enemy within and I don't want to share my evil little garbage america with you. You and I can pass in the street but we could never be friends.
Good luck enjoying your new economy.

Here is what I don't understand on tariffs. They didn't go away after Trump left. I have 5 invoices from different companies in front of me that I just paid and all have the tariff line item that started when Trump put them in place during his 1st term. There are more than just these 5 companies that have it on their invoice but those are just the ones that were scheduled to be paid today. So why the talk of prices going up once the tariffs hit because they are already there. An example would be if a previous tariff was 10% but now is raised to 25%, then the item will now be 15% higher. Plus he has talked about adding tariffs to things that did not have them previously. Retaliatory tariffs will then be placed on US goods by those countries. His last tariffs cost farmers over $60 billion dollars which he then used most of the tariffs we were paid to bail them out. www.politico.com/news/2020/07/14/donald-trump-coronavirus-farmer-bailouts-359932

I am disappointed that only a few Republicans answered my question from my OP. And I a disappointed - but not surprised that this thread became another political debate just like all the others. I didn't ask any Dems for their opinion. I am going back into my little corner now and won't be speaking up anymore. Cindy You could always tell us which policies you are looking forward to and give us factual information as to why it will be good for the country.

I think it will be interesting to see how many complain about the leopards eating their faces over the next four years. My favorite subreddit, if you’ve never visited. It’s already getting busy there. This morning it was a post about a manufacturer calling his workers in yesterday, telling them they won’t get Christmas bonuses this year because the company wants to stock up on materials before Trump’s tariffs kick in. Oops. The leopards are going to be eating well over the next four years. What subreddit? I would love to read it

I am most concerned that he will sell his soul to the highest bidder and in this case, that is Putin. Our national security is at risk because of him. Virtually everyone that was part of his previous administration has said so. The boxes and boxes of classified documents discovered at Mar-a-Lago were not accidentally taken to that bathroom and ballroom so he could scrapbook his presidential memories.

It’s mind boggling that not only was this a question but that you had to respond. Why on earth don’t people listen to his words? The lack of critical thinking is just astounding. But hey lets dismantle the public education system, that will help. This is what I was talking about in previous posts but oh well I will still bite. Do I really think he is going to impose a 1000% tariff? No. If he imposes large tariffs would my company benefit? Yes because we design and engineer a lot of products that once they get to larger volume quantities we lose them to China because of pricing. When that gap closes then our customers come back to us to build their parts. When I choose who I vote for are tariffs a key issue for me? No. There are much bigger issues that I factor into my decision. Gosh I hope you can understand my post since I am so uneducated. Question: for example, if your company charges $50 for an item and China's tariff raises the cost of theirs to $100, does your company then raise the cost of the item to $75 (still cheaper) or keep it $50? Your company may still be making more money, but consumers are still paying more. We saw this happen during Covid with supply and demand. Did most companies drop the price back down or keep them inflated when their costs decreased?

For the National Debt voters www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/trump-says-no-price-tag-mass-deportation-plan-rcna179178"President-elect Donald Trump told NBC News on Thursday that one of his first priorities upon taking office in January would be to make the border “strong and powerful.” When questioned about his campaign promise of mass deportations, Trump said his administration would have “no choice” but to carry them out." "As a candidate, Trump had repeatedly vowed to carry out the "largest deportation effort in American history." Asked about the cost of his plan, he said, "It’s not a question of a price tag. It’s not — really, we have no choice. When people have killed and murdered, when drug lords have destroyed countries, and now they’re going to go back to those countries because they’re not staying here. There is no price tag.""

Like I said in my fb post "absolute power corrupts absolutely" and I still stand by it...with both parties. No, don't both parties this. When Democrats have had all 3, they've never done anything to hurt people. If they have, give me an example. And, we've always had a sane self regulating Dem president. Trump had all 3 in 2017 and 2018 but the only thing that stopped him was one or two sane republicans. With a 52-49 senate split, Lisa Murkowski may be the sane republican in the room but it doesn't matter. So again ask, who or what is going to stop him now? Oh right, you don't believe he will do what HE TOLD YOU he is going to do.

nothing like hearing that, when you're concerned about the national debt increasing, is there?!? He said whatever he needed to appeal to the audience he was talking to at the moment. Whether it was possible, or totally opposite of something he'd said 5 minutes before. Why people couldn't see that, I truly have no idea. Boggles my mind. he's like one of those trash-everyone comedians; what's the term for them? Like Don Rickles, or one of those guys (who wouldn't get work most places nowadays, thankfully). He said what he needed to in order to get a cheer and applause from the audience in front of them. He needs accolades because he had a terrible relationship with his father, he sees the world in a totally black-and-white transactional outlook of 'deals' and 'what's in it for me' and he keeps people around him who are USEFUL to him in some way, and/or who flatter him. If you're not useful any more, you're out (oh, and you were horrible all along, by the way). That is not a sane person, and should not be elected dog-catcher, let alone President.

While right do you feel you have lost? Is it abortion? As I understand it it’s up to each state to determine that right. My state made sure that our right was not taken from us. I was verbal that it should be a woman’s right to choose. Our state heard our plea. Should the threaten to limit insurance coverage I will once again make my voice heard. You too should align yourself with others that are willing to put words in to action. Even though 57% of my state wanted abortion rights it didn't pass. I am a citizen of the United States, so where is it right or fair that I have less rights than you? My daughter and goddaughter were both planning to have another baby next year. They both told me this week that they changed their minds. They do not feel having another child is worth the risk of not being there for the child they have already. I saw a MAGA man make a post this week that said " Your body, MY CHOICE, Forever". Imagine how women and girls feel seeing something like this.

Oh good. I see that Republicans are already getting serious about the national debt. *sarcasm*
From the Washington Post:
“ President-elect Donald Trump is poised to push swiftly for new tax cuts if Republicans win full control of Congress, further slashing corporate rates and extending trillions of dollars of other cuts even as the national debt soars. Get a curated selection of 10 of our best stories in your inbox every weekend.
Major portions of Trump’s 2017 tax law are set to expire next year, and Republicans are aiming to give Trump a major legislative accomplishment within his first 100 days in office. The GOP won control of the Senate in Tuesday’s elections. While control of the House is still uncertain, Republicans are optimistic that results are trending toward maintaining their narrow majority. As party leaders discuss their plans for the early days of a new Trump administration, the attitude that’s emerged on taxes is, “Just go,” according to a top conservative lobbyist familiar with the discussions, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe private talks. “Rip the Band-Aid and run and just plow it through.”
Skipping down…
Trump’s existing plans come with a hefty price tag: The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projects that the tax legislation could add $9.15 trillion over the next decade to the national debt, which already sits near $36 trillion.

I don't understand how so many people do not realize that the United States is not in NATO or any other treaty for the sake of any other country except the United States. They do not enter into wars for any reason except to protect American interests. Those overseas bases are not really to protect the countries they are in. It's to stop conflict coming to American soil. It's not altruistic, it's self-interest.

Not a Republican. Definitely a bleeding heart liberal. (Matthew 25).
I think Trump will continue to golf as much as possible and leave the running of the country up to his ass kissers. Musk has released a statement already about every American enduring hardship. Project 2025 authors will be cabinet members.
Hang onto your hat....its going to be a bumpy ride.
I'm retired and have a lovely nest egg of IRA and stocks that I worked hard to put away. If I lose them, I'm going to be pissed. I have a pre existing cardiac condition. Just putting it out there......going to be pissed.

Imagine how women and girls feel seeing something like this. I’m sorry. 57% voted wanted rights why didn’t it pass?

57% voted wanted rights why didn’t it pass? Just guessing, but probably required 60% to pass. They tried to make that a law here in Ohio, but luckily it went down.

57% voted wanted rights why didn’t it pass? Because the measure needed 60% of votes to pass. And because the Republican governor, DeSantis, used state funds to run ads against it. Florida was one of the lucky states to have abortion even on the ballot. In Arkansas, the conservative state Supreme Court blocked it from the ballot. Other states like Texas do not even have the option to put voter sponsored measures on the ballot. In Texas, the heavily gerrymandered Republican State House has control. I'm curious why you think anyone should have the right to decide what happens to someone else's body? Why should reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy be voted on in the first place? Why should it be left up to the states? Civil rights have traditionally been federal laws because reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy, the right to marry who you love and the right to not be discriminated against should not disappear when you cross state lines.

I agree He is a very honorable man and I have supported him. When cognitive decline came into play it angered me that the Democratic Party chose to hide his condition. They choose support his reelection. It was clear to many people that he in decline yet they didn’t address it. I’m furious that he was disrespected and treated like the way he was. That’s on the Democrats. They took a very fine man and humiliated him publicly. Maybe if they would have provided a candidate that had the time to develop a platform we wouldn’t be in the situation. I think you could argue that the media could be blamed more than the Democratic Party. I think they covered it up a bit and then when they couldn't these high profile donors started seeing what was going on and pushed for him to be replaced as a nominee. I agree he was treated horribly. Probably a bit irrational but I blame George Clooney for how Biden got treated at the end. I quoted Laurie, but most of my comments are in response to wezee. I'm angry at the media for their uneven treatment of the candidates. Biden was blasted for every tiny mistake that he made and Trump mostly got a pass for the many times in the last few months that he garbled words, made up words, slurred words, trailed off in completely random tangents, fell asleep etc. Maybe George Clooney played a small role in pushing Biden out, but I blame the mainstream media. For example, in the week after the Biden-Trump debate, the NYT published 192 pieces on Biden’s debate performance: 142 news articles and 50 opinion pieces. Trump was covered in 92 stories, about half of which were about the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling. heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/july-5-2024-friday?utm_source=publication-searchIn defense of Biden, I think his poor debate performance can be attributed in part to a few things - his speech impairment, covid (the beginning or just recovering? I forget the exact timing)lack of sleep and jet lag (he had just returned from a quick trip to Europe). Also, Trump's debate style - to toss out lies in a firehouse fashion is particularly challenging for anyone, but especially someone with a speech impairment. Without question, Biden has aged physically in his time in the White House. But, I think the debate performance was an outlier and not a fair representation of his cognitive ability. If the debate was typical, the White House would not have been able to keep that a secret. Biden meets with so many people every day, people from different countries, politicians from both parties, everyday Americans etc. It would not be possible to keep that secret. And no one who has met with him recently criticized his cognitive abilities, decline or performance. Listening to Biden the morning after the debate and in other press conferences, he's back to normal for him. Also, maybe if Harris had more time, she could have won. However, more time would also have given conservative media and Republicans time to attack her. And in her defense, her policy proposals are on her website. She talked about them and all of her surrogates campaigning for her talked about them. In comparison, Trump got a pass for vague plans, we're working on them and astonishingly little detail or specifics. As Michelle Obama said, Harris was expected to dazzle everyone with her policy and no one asked Trump challenging questions or pushed him for details. Or in Van Jones words, Harris has to be flawless and Trump was lawless.

oh, excuse me... I didn't know which of the endless, pointless, cruel, costly repeal attempts we were talking about. The skinny repeal would have got rid of the individual mandate to either have health insurance or pay a penalty. I agreed with that and stood behind that part. Of course the Republicans had to use it as an opportunity to defund Planned Parenthood so it didn't pass. The whole clinging onto changing abortion is always going to be their downfall. The Republicans tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act more than 60 or 70 times, I forgot the exact number. Moderate Republicans like John McCain stopped them. But, all of the moderate Republicans have resigned or been forced out. I understand the objection to the mandate, the Republicans did successfully repeal it in 2017. However, the mandate was a compromise with the insurance companies to keep costs down. Without it, the pools are smaller and costs higher. Mike Johnson said they would repeal the Affordable Care Act before the election. If Republicans control the White House, Senate & House and the Supreme Court, what do you think will stop them from doing exactly that?

I don’t know anything about funding. Asking respectfully. Did the federal government subsidize abortions? One could make the case that they don’t want the Federal government providing funds to something they find morality offensive. Let each state decide what’s best for their residents. What’s best for Utah may not be best for Kansas. . Thankfully my state mandated that you have the fundamental right to make decisions about your reproductive health care.
