What is your favorite size, type, etc.? Do you make them from scratch? Buy a mini album base, and go from there? Do you use them for showing off special photos, or have you made any that are more like a collection of elaborate cards, just as a creative project? Do you keep them, or do you give them away? For me they are more of a creative exercise that I can go back and enjoy when I need a creative boost. I have only made two mini albums that actually have photos in them, and they were both kits that I bought at a convention. Most of the time, I make mini albums from scratch, just as a creative home decor project more than an album (heresy, I know). I think this one (not mine) must be my favorite type to make, because it’s the only one that I’ve used the pattern to make different ones (and it’s relatively quick to make compared to a lot of mini albums):
Flip Fold TutorialThey are quite small and don’t seem that sturdy, but I’ve made a couple of minis using the Flip Fold album format, and they’ve held up fairly well. They’re more the type you’d want to put in a basket on a coffee table, but they are fun and cute. I’ve been struggling to get back to actual scrapbooking. I seem to be more of a card maker these days, but sometimes mini albums kind of bridge the two types of paper crafting for me.

I use a lot of notebooks in a variety of sizes, but when it comes to mini albums I need outside ideas. I use Simple Stories 6x8 albums and just stick to the pockets or 6x8 layouts unless it is a Vicki Boutin class where she tells me to build my own pockets and flips and other things. Otherwise I buy kits from my LSS for the fancy mini albums. They usually start with one of the 49 and Market covers and go from there. I alternate between giving them to my family (both with and without photos) or using them for a specific theme like a vacation or family event and keeping them. I don't think I have any empty ones currently, but there might be one or two somewhere waiting to have pictures added.

I am also mostly a card maker these days. And back when I scrapbooked I only completed a small number of projects, all in smaller formats (CM 8x8 and 5x7 albums). I don't think those are the handcrafted mini-albums you're talking about, scrapnnana . But, like you, I'm also trying to scrap a little more. Club Scrap offers a lot of handmade mini-album projects but they look very intimidating to me. I use Simple Stories 6x8 albums and just stick to the pockets or 6x8 layouts unless it is a Vicki Boutin class where she tells me to build my own pockets and flips and other things. I recently completed a project using SS 6x8 flip books, with page layouts (not pocket pages) and was reminded of my former successes with smaller formats. I haven't taken any sort of scrapbook class in decades, but I'm signed up for S&CT's Holiday Fun class with Andrea Lake. I don't think I'm going to like the project as it will be presented, but I like the Simple Stories 6x8 kit for the class. I'm also really excited to be branching out and taking a class in scrapbooking.

Thanks for your replies, justjac, gramma, and shakti (sorry, the name link isn’t working tonight for some reason).
Justjac, I haven’t done anything with notebooks, but I have bought and made a few kits. I’ve also adapted ideas off Pinterest. You have done better than I have as far as getting pictures added to yours, and kudos for giving some of them to family.
Gramma, your cousins mini album is adorable. I’ve always called that type of mini album and accordian album, but whatever the name, they are fun, relatively easy, and fun to do.
Shakti, I totally understand if you want to focus on scrapbooking, not mini albums. I agree that some mini album kits that one can buy are intimidating, although the few that I bought and made had detailed instructions and weren’t as challenging as I expected. For the record, if I want to get back to scrapbooking, I probably shouldn’t be letting myself get sidetracked by mini albums, either. However, what I should do and what I want to do are often two different things…..

For the record, if I want to get back to scrapbooking, I probably shouldn’t be letting myself get sidetracked by mini albums, either. You know, when they teach animals to perform tricks, they don't wait until the animal performs it perfectly to give a treat reward. Any movement/progress in the right direction is rewarded. So, if you think mini-albums might be a "gateway drug" on the path to more scrapbooking, don't beat yourself up for it.
