Please help an old mom that isn't very well versed in video games!!
My 8 year old loves Minecraft. He plays on a switch. Yesterday I linked up his account so he could play with one of his buddies. We found the gamertag and they were able to share a world and do what 8 year olds do on Minecraft. I noticed last night he was playing on the TV and it was with presumably the entire world that was on Minecraft. He was of course loving it as I'm sure it's more fun to play with others than just yourself.
Here is my questions. I realize I opened the portal. It was my understanding he could only play with "friends" that we selected and approved. Obviously not the case, at least the way I did it.
Do I shut it down entirely? Can I limit so he can only play with pre-approved friends? From what I could see last night you can't jump in and talk to each other -- is that correct? Inside the Minecraft portal or whatever, what are the dangers of being open to the universe? What is the best way to give my kiddo some freedom as we learn together about online health and safety with Minecraft?

I know that my son's dad has it set up to where our son can only play with three of his friends in their own world. There are no other strangers or chatting with strangers or anybody like that. That stuff scares the heck out of me! He can only chat with his three friends in their world.
I'm not sure how to explain it because I didn't set it up and you'll probably get an answer before I can give you one but if not I'll try to reply later.

My sons is set up so he can only chat with "friends" on there. I think I did it thru the Microsoft gaming thing. It was a LONG time ago. It's a website you have to login to as a parent. There are all kinds of toggles you can switch on/off.

You need to go to your parental controls for your Switch. The only time this becomes an issue is if you have everything tied to only your username and your child then uses it… which does not sound like the case here. www.nintendo.com/us/switch/parental-controls/Hope that helps!
