Poll #2 Will there or won’t there be a national abortion ban?
It’s suppose to be ““ wants to apply” and will he” and I’m not changing it.
This thread will be a series of polls on if trump will or won’t do things he said during the campaign.
I will change the poll every couple of days with a new trump promise . I will also note the results of the previous poll.
First poll - the tariffs he wants to apply to goods from China and possibly Mexico.
He claims it’s a “tax” and that the consumer won’t be paying higher prices.
Financial experts say other wise and consumers buy goods with tariffs will indeed pay higher prices.

So honest, perhaps ignorant question. I thought NAFTA did away with Mexico/USA/Canada tariffs?

I like to think that he will start applying tariffs and there will be such an uproar with higher prices that he will back off or he only does targeted tariffs to begin with. However, with his cabinet appointments he is doing exactly what he said he would do. If he continues in that vein, he will apply the tariffs.
I think a lot of people such as more traditional Republicans voted for him thinking he wouldn't really do all the stuff he said he would. They will be wrong and we will all suffer for it.

So honest, perhaps ignorant question. I thought NAFTA did away with Mexico/USA/Canada tariffs? Doesn’t he want to get rid of that? I thought there were tariffs on Canadian aluminum but then they were relaxed during Covid or something like that. He is saying he will add tariffs on Mexico if they allow people to come to our country through theirs.

Five people here (so far) don't understand how tariffs work.

Five people here (so far) don't understand how tariffs work. bwahaha!! thanks for the laugh; I needed it today. I chose yes and prices will go up, but my real answer is of COURSE he will, and of COURSE prices will go up! They already are in some cases, just in anticipation of it. No self-respecting CEO is going to pass up the chance to make a buck when they can. And since the king-of-chaos is terrible for business because you never know what he'll do from one freakin' day to the next (depending on what Taylor Swift or Stephen King said about him and whether they took his phone away from him or not), I would hate to be a business owner having to make long-term decisions right now.

Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller on TariffsI have already begun planning accordingly and will be stocking up on some things. Worst case scenario, he enacts tariffs, prices shoot up and my planning works well. Best case scenario, I'm stocked up on goods for quite a while and my cars have been serviced as well as upgrading my laptop & cell phone.

You guys, my head just might actually explode. A Facebook friend (I haven’t had contact with him besides Facebook since college, but he is active military and very smart) wrote a well written post about the cabinet picks so far and one of his friends asked why his opinion was more important than any other voter. Friend wrote another well written, calm response about a criminal running the country, etc. His friend then said that he didn’t know Trump had multiple felonies!!! But then ended with “I don’t know if I would have voted for Harris because she didn’t seem like a good candidate but don’t bother trying to prove me wrong.” THIS is what we are dealing with! People who don’t know what the heck they are talking about but by god they are experts now because they voted for the winning candidate. Ugh.

I think prices are going to go up regardless of the tariffs being implemented and corporations will use “the promise of tariffs” as an excuse to drive up prices. Anything to keep lining shareholders pockets.

DH had a conversation with a Trumper friend on speakerphone in the car a couple months ago after he was convicted, and DH said he wasn’t going to vote for a convicted felon. His friend said something like, “All of those things they’re accusing him of are made up charges. It’s all a politically motivated witch hunt.” DH said, “How can you say that when two separate juries so far have found him guilty? Juries of his peers! And what about all the boxes of classified documents they found in his bathroom at Maralago?” And the friend said, “Well, those cases were in New York and people are biased against him there.” 🙄🤪 That was when DH knew his friend was completely indoctrinated in the cult. I’m telling you, you just can’t make this stuff up.

I’ve heard those arguments as well (even here in the last week) but this guy sincerely seemed to not have a clue that Trump was convicted of anything. It’s mind boggling.

Poll #1
Final tally on tariffs…
90 - Yes trump will add tariffs and yes tariffs will cause consumer prices to go up.
8 - Yes trump will add tariffs and no consumer prices won’t go up.
1- No trump will not apply tariffs.

Poll #2 - National Abortion Ban
trump has said abortion laws should be left up to the states. But he lies about everything and there are enough Republicans that want a national ban.
My guess is it will happen.

I said no, only because I think it will be Vance who does it after Trump leaves office (i'm assuming that will happen before his 4 years are up).

A national ban? My gut reaction is they’ll certainly try, but it’ll fail. The Rs can pass it in the House because they have the minimum 218. But, how will they pass it in the Senate (you need 60)?

I think he will try. I hope it doesn’t happen. The people in the states that have banned it have witnessed with horror in real life some of the consequences and people have died as a result. I can only imagine that would be amplified if the bans were nationwide.

I think Trump/ Vance will find a sneaky way around an abortion ban like effectively banning it by invoking the Comstock Act to stop shipment of medication through the mail or using the FDA to withdraw approval for the medications. The Republicans might break the filibuster for something that really matters to them like corporate tax cuts. And leave it to them to break the filibuster in a way that only they can use. Not sure if they’ll break the filibuster for abortion, though. I think they know it’s really unpopular and don’t want to vote on it

Vance has said he would ban well he usually doesn’t state it that way but called it something else but it equates to a ban after so many weeks I don’t think he said how many weeks.

Not sure if they’ll break the filibuster for abortion, though. I think they know it’s really unpopular and don’t want to vote on it To break, though, one has to invoke cloture--60 votes. There are exceptions, of course—like confirming nominations and budget reconciliations. Not new tax legislation--they'll need some Dems for that. On a national abortion ban--I don’t really see how they can do it unless they go for what we’ve called the “nuclear option.” But, that’s a huge risk as we Dems ourselves have found out. We used it to push through Obama’s nominees (that’s why all it takes now to vote in nominees is a simple majority). What happened afterwards? Rs used it to push through judicial nominees when they regained majority. Now, are Rs going to use this option for a national ban when, as you said, it’s not really popular? I don't know. (Btw, re the first sentence of your post…I’m not sure I fully understand it.)
