They actually bought it. There is a NY Times article but I’m not a subscriber, so that’s why I linked the NBC News article.
However, the Onion article is satirical. The CEO who “wrote” it doesn’t exist. The actual CEO is former NBC journalist Ben Collins.

I was going to start a thread on this!
I had texted it to my kids with asking if it was true; after it well, because it's the Onion.
But I guess it's true!

Just told my husband we have to hold fast to the wins, small and large. Apparently some Sandyhook families were involved and Everytown For Gun Safety will be their sole advertiser for the first two years. I hope Alex Jones is apoplectic .

This is wonderful! I also learned the Onion is based in Chicago, so I'm going to be all over my son, who was editor of the University of Iowa's version of the Onion (the Doily Allergen) to apply for a job there!!

I'm sure that was a joke post, but it made me laugh.
The headline about InfoWars being purchased by the Onion would be a candidate for an Onion headline.

Ben Collins post under the name "Tim Onion" there and he said he did it, because he agreed with Bluesky it would be funny! It didn't sound like it was a thought until he read it. |

Confirmed by Ben Collins: Alex Jones's humongous desk is going to the Knowledge Fight podcasters who've been after it for years. I cannot wait to hear their next episode. They have played a crucial part in the demise of Alex Jones (and one of them was even on the legal team hired by the Sandy Hook families as he's the only true AJ specialist out there). What an outcome. Comedy history, one could even say.  |

I heard this announced on NPR as breaking news, and God help him, the announcer actually snickered a little before he caught himself.  It's the best possible outcome to this situation. |

UPDATE! I don't quite understand the legal jargon, but it seems like Musk is trying to intervene in the purchase! He filed a "notice of appearance", not quite sure what that is, but a judge is questioning the transparency of the transaction.
