Spanakopita. The Greek spinach phyllo dish. I was watching the Great British Bake Off yesterday and it reminded me of when I went to order it as a side at a local restaurant recently and asked for it how I thought it was pronounced and the cashier repeated the word back pronounced differently and I kind of felt stupid for saying it wrong After watching TV yesterday I googled and her pronunciation was not one of the two (British or American) pronunciations or the Greek pronunciation as far as I can tell... also the subtitles on GBBO spell phyllo as filo which I also need to look up... Just a curious, for fun, no drama question

hmmm...
span uh cope it uh (as in fan) (halfway between 'cope' and 'cop')
(no idea if that's correct, though! lol)
And I have heard phyllo pronounced 'fee-low' as well as 'fi-low' dough.

Very good question. I always want to say span-a-COP-it-ah because of the spelling. I've never heard it pronounced that way, so I know I must be way off.

I have lots of Greek friends, and I have eaten loads of spanakopita (YUM!) so I am confident that I pronounce it correctly. It's pretty much as crimsoncat05 wrote it: span-uh-COPE-it-uh. And as she mentioned, I say the 'kop' part as a mixture of cope and cop. And I spell the pastry as 'filo'. I always give a little shudder when I read the word 'phyllo'. ETA: And I pronounce filo as FEEL-oh (as opposed to FEE-low - there is a distinction!)

I have never ever seen the word phyllo before! 😄
Filo pronounced fee-low or fy-low works for me 😊

Span uh co pee tah. Even though it’s wrong, that’s how I say it, which is never.

I pronounce it span-a- cop-pit-a which is apparently the British way (and I probably learned it that way from cooking shows on TV), but the cashier said it as Span-a-co- pee-ta emphasis on the pee... Span-a- co-pit-a is the American pronunciation (according to Google.) I will from now on forever order something else when I go to that particular take-out place so I never have to say that word out loud

I have never ever seen the word phyllo before! 😄 Filo pronounced fee-low or fy-low works for me 😊 I work in a grocery store in the Frozen Foods department. Phyllo is with the frozen desserts, right next to the puff pastry. We pronounce it fee-low. I have heard customers say fee-low and fy-low.

It's got spinach, that would be "yuk"
I don’t know why brainwash gets such a bad rap. I would love to have a deep clean brainwash to clear out all the cobwebs and dust bunnies.

I don't think I've ever tried to say it. Would likely sheepishly ask for the "spinach pie." I do the same with avgolemono - I ask for the lemon rice soup.
