www.lonestarleft.com/p/texas-board-of-education-moves-forwardMy tagline these days is "front row to the shit show," and here's a shining example. Coming soon to a state near you under the coming administration, I'm sure. If this sounds like no big deal to you, consider that the evangelical worldview from which these lessons will be written may not align with your family's beliefs. And of course, decide how comfortable you are demoting your child's Jewish, Muslim, and non-believing classmates to second class status in your schools.

That is Unconstitutional as hell. Precisely what the founding fathers were trying to avoid. I hate it here.

I can’t anymore. California should be able to protect us pretty well for the next couple of years while my grandkid finishes up high school. But by the end of this presidential term, who knows what the educational system in this country will look like. To say nothing of health, defense, justice, immigration, the economy, and the general welfare.
Remember when I said we were doomed? Now we really ARE doomed.

Indoctrinate the kids who will learn to turn in their parents far too soon...

If they are going to teach one kind of religion they should be prepared to teach all kinds of religion. This should stay out of the public schools period. If you want religious teaching then go to a private school.

iF yOu DOnt liKE iT, LEavE F*ck that. We will stay and fight to get our country back. This is something that needs to be reiterated. Don't let them decide what the United States is. This was a close election, and we all learned a lot about some of our fellow citizens' values. That doesn't mean it's over. Before the 2020 election, my MIL made a comment about the only stamps they had were US Flag ones and she didn't feel excited about using them. I said, "Don't let them define what it means to be patriotic."

Didn't Oklahoma just try this and the courts struck it down? Oklahoma tried opening a religious charter school with public funds. That was struck down. It's pretty clear this is another example of Texas floating a test case to see what they can get away with. I'm sure this will be challenged all the way to SCOTUS. This court hasn't seemed too interested in requiring every state to follow the 14th amendment, so I don't have much hope that they'll enforce the 1st.

Some days I'm like, screw it, we're out of here, and some days I feel like people with our privileges need to stay and fight. If Trump starts rounding up any and every undocumented immigrant here in Texas, things are going to get ugly fast.

The subject of birthright citizenship, brings back echoes of the Dred Scott decision which the Supreme Court ruled he, and no other person of African descent could claim citizenship. No doubt this is bad, but it's not the worst this country has lived through. If people gave up the good fight, what would that say about us?
I should have saved the social media post when I saw it, but basically we need to fight like hell over rights being taken away, voting, attacks against the Constitution that Trump is doing to do an end-run around the Senate and separation of powers, attacks on democracy itself, that type of stuff. But the public safety net stuff, so Americans don't suffer, harm reduction... well, they did vote (or didn't show up) for this.

A thing I'd like to note is that the most educated populations in the US are not Christian. I don't speak for people who are Hindu. I also don't speak for people who are Jewish, but I am Jewish, so I will say this: my opinion is that people I know won't send their Jewish kids to public schools that are teaching the Christian bible, for a host of reasons. So what this feels like to me is an attack on public education, more than it even feels like indoctrination -- it's a policy move designed to get the most educated people out there to abandon public schools.

And if they are able to get the most educated kids out of public school, I can see how that helps them move toward their ultimate goal. Average test scores will plummet and they can then say, “See? Look how poorly the public schools are doing! We’ve been throwing money at this forever and it obviously doesn’t work. Kids will be better served if the schools are privatized.” And then they can funnel all of those public school funds directly into the pockets of their cronies like Betsy DeVos. My family doesn’t follow any organized religion at all and I would be very opposed to this. I went to private religious school from 1st through 7th grade and it was a horrible experience, which is exactly why my kid DOESN’T go to private school.

His border czar says to expect “shock and awe” from roundups on day 1. I’m sure his supporters are salivating at the thought of so much human misery.

Although, it HAS crossed my mind that I need to get serious about getting better with Spanish because I may one day in my retirement decide to run away to Ecuador. Purely for financial reasons.

It's occurred to me that, if this curriculum is implemented in Texas, the best thing for non-Christians and others to do is to request an exemption from and an alternative assignment for any bible-based teaching at school. That will create a big logistical nightmare that will - hopefully - cause schools to reject the curriculum, and for it eventually to be dropped.

I would object for many many reasons.. but the big one is their curriculum would not honor my beliefs as a christian.
they are picking and choosing what they like out of their version of theology.

I'm sure there are any number of kids who will freely share their opinions when lessons are not fact-based. My oldest would have had a great time with that.

Texas will try (and probably succeed) by claiming that the curriculum isn't teaching a particular religion - it is treating the study of religion as a study of culture. Of course this is nonsense, but we live in a new world now. Thanks, MAGA!
ps. nothing would make me happier to see some school district do this with the Koran. Let's see how that goes over
