My MIL and SIL are hard to buy for. Both of them live alone. I thought maybe I would buy them the 2 cup, 1 cup, and cookie dough cubes and then fill them (I love to cook and am pretty good at it) and give them as a Christmas gift?
They are having a Black Friday sale right now.
Anyone want to weigh in? Would this be a stupid gift?
ETA: Both of them do love soup and are pretty decent cooks. I know they would have no trouble refilling them and continuing to use them.

I use them all the time- but I fill them with ingredients rather than leftovers. Yesterday I filled the 1/2 one with pesto and the 1 cup with chicken stock. Then I can pop out what I need for recipes when cooking. They are good quality. I’ve just purchased mine on Amazon.

I haven’t had any issues- they are a nice quality product. But I have not used them for actual leftovers so that could be different maybe but I think it would be fine. I am getting dd1 the 1/2 cup to use like I do for ingredients as she cooks for 1 and ingredients can go to waste and also the 2 cup for actual leftovers.

I didn't know there was such a product, so thank you for mentioning it! I keep getting ads for them on Facebook and I've been thinking for a long time now that they would be nice to have. The ad I saw this morning said they were having a Black Friday sale. Once you put them in your cart you see a 20% off price. I have what I want in the cart. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. A lot of time they eat convenience foods, despite the fact that they tend to like home cooking type of recipes because they both live alone and there's just too much for them to finish. But I totally thought I would make a variety of soups and chili and fill the containers for them before gifting. Same with the cookie dough. I love to bake so a batch of cookies would be easy to put together for them.

I see that they have stoneware that is the shape of the Souper Cubes, so I may pick some up. I can do lasagnas or pot pies and I like that you can plop them right into the stoneware and cook them. I follow a lady on TT that is all about her Souper Cubes. She has some great ideas on how to use them.

I use the one cup size (4 compartments), mainly for freshly made soup. Once the soup is solid I put it in bags for storage and can reuse the cubes, which I wash in the dishwasher. I only have a couple of negatives to them, which are probably personal to me - they take up more space in the freezer than I'd like and it can be difficult getting the frozen food out until you get the knack of pushing the base with your thumbs and peeling the sides up towards you. I like them.

gillyp how long have you had them? The dishwasher hasn't weakened them? I don't remember, possibly pre-Covid. They are fine in the dishwasher. The lid has an internal metal rim so it doesn't warp. I think they are sold as being dishwasher safe.

I've just checked mine and it's the base that has the metal rim, apologies for the incorrect info. The lids are still perfect and flat though, no twisting whatsover.

I think it’s a great idea. I actually watched the inventors on Shark Tank. I also have a food saver that once my soup is frozen in one of those cubes I pop them out and then vacuum pack them with my food saver.

No warping and these are in use a lot through the winter, mainly. I’ve not used them in the oven but the quality is the same as ovenproof silicon bake wear.

And get more use out of each tray. I think it’s a great idea. My idea to give them for Christmas filled? They tend to really like my cooking.

How will you give them? With frozen food in? With food ready for baking in? My only slight reticence at them being pre-filled at Christmas time is that if I were the recipient I wouldn’t have freezer space available or I might have too much food already in, so cooking more would be difficult for me. Iyswim. They would make a good gift though.

I like them. I use Souper Cubes as well and I also take the items - once frozen - out of the trays and put them in gallon size bags. Four of the 2 cup ones will fit beautifully in a gallon size bag, for examples. I do cool the items thoroughly and put in the fridge before freezing. I've used them for soups, casseroles, taco/pulled meat, chicken and turkey stock, etc. I make big batches of things and then freeze portions for later - I have a nice amount in the freezer now. I've even used this for leftovers from restaurants that I think will freeze well. Or things like beans that only I like. And like someone else said - I'll fill them with ingredients too. Pesto. Stock. Sauces that would freeze well. I love them and think they're great quality. I've had some of mine for a year and other than some mild staining they are in great shape. If you're on Instagram, Sarah Hart does a lot with them - very inspiring for me: Sarah Hart Freezer Cooking
Edited to add: I think they'd make a great gift. That's what my sister is getting this year.

[/article]

It should not be a problem for my SIL because when they sold and moved from my MIL's house, she took a basement deep freeze. Last time I was at my MIL's house, I did get ice out of her freezer and well, there was hardly anything in there. LOL! Maybe it was before a big grocery run or something, but also my MIL lives just minutes away from us and I have a deep freezer. I could always keep the things in my freezer until she has space to store them or can unfreeze to use them.

A lot of time they eat convenience foods, despite the fact that they tend to like home cooking type of recipes because they both live alone and there's just too much for them to finish. I have started using them in the past year for this exact reason and love them! It allows me to cook my favorite recipes and then save the rest in smaller portions. After they are frozen I pop the food out and then seal them using my FoodSaver. That way I only need a couple of Souper Cubes to worry about storing.

If they cook and they freeze, I don’t think it is a bad gift at all. There have been a few threads about these and every time I read them I want to go and buy them…but haven’t yet…but still want to. 😆
I tend to do the same thing but with plastic dishes I have that are flatter as those store the best in my freezer. I flash freeze things for a bit and then take it out of the container and just vacuum seal it.

I've eyed these off and on over the years but in the end I don't buy them. lol. My reason is freezer space. We have only the top-of-the-fridge freezer compartment. So when I freeze things like soup I use ziplock bags and freeze them flat so they stack nicely. If I had a stand-alone freezer I would like to use these cubes.

I use mine constantly and LOVE them. I bought the 4 piece set several years ago and have since then added three more (2cup, 1cup and 2T) to my collection. It is the highest quality silicone product I have ever used. My original pieces don't look older at all and I only know they are because they are a different color.
I make a lot of bone broth and Souper cubes are the easiest way for me to freeze them. The cubes fit so neatly into gallon freezer bags and take up very little room. With the 2 and 1 cup sizes I also do soups, marinara sauce, cooked beans etc. The 1/2 cup size is good for smaller amounts of sauces, heavy cream, buttermilk etc - really good for saving small amounts that would otherwise go to waste. It's also a good size for long lasting ice cubes for water bottles. Then the 2T size I tend to use for tomato paste and making garlic and ginger cubes for cooking. My kids also like little broth cubes in that size to cool off their soup.
I haven't done much baking or casserole type dishes with them but the website has a lot of good ideas. I might try to do chicken pot pie or shepherds pie that way because Dh and I are really the only ones who like those. I take my MIL a stack of soup cubes periodically and then there aren't containers to return.

Mine are about a year old. No issues until recently when I was having trouble getting rid of the smell from the stock I made. So I soaked them in vinegar bath and that helped.
I use them weekly and they have held up very well. No cracks, no warping, no issues with the lid.
The cubes pop out easily and there is no sticking.
I would suggest building them a stash and using a food saver to bag up the frozen cubes then label. Then give them the cubes with the frozen food.
That way they have meals and then can build their own stash of what they would like to have.
Souper Cubes now sells the baking dish your 2 cup cube goes into for reheating in the oven or on counter oven.
I use mine for batch soup and stock.
I follow a person on TT that has a freezer stocked with cubes. She will take ingredients and make pot pie or lasagna and then bake it in the oven when they want that. I thought that was very smart because it is ready to heat in a perfect serving size.
She has also tested potatoes and done shepherds pie.
I am asking Santa hubby for 2 tablespoon one and 2 more 2 cup ones. I also have the 1 cup.
