I am hoping the power of the peas can help. My dad is coming for Thanksgiving and my mom always would make what we called "North Dakota Dessert". She is in memory care now and the recipe is not accessible to her anymore. I have no doubt it was not really called what we called it but she got it from her sister, who lived in North Dakota. It was three layers in a crust. I personally don't remember if it was a graham cracker crust or pie crust, my sister thinks it was a pie crust but isn't sure. The bottom layer was a white cream cheese-based layer. (I only know that because the last time my mom made it, she used moldy cream cheese in hopes of poisoning my dad.) The second layer was chocolate pudding based. Maybe it was just straight chocolate pudding? And the third layer was some kind of whipped topping...maybe Cool Whip with something else? I am not sure. It was something that was kept chilled and she would cut it into squares. Does this sound familiar to anyone??
ETA: The original recipe could easily have had nuts but my dad hates all nuts other than peanuts so she would have left that off.

Oh this was one of our favorites growing up - my brother loved it so much he requested it in place of cake for his birthdays for several years. Also widely served in South Dakota and Nebraska, at least in the 80s.

Why didn't I think to try googling "layered chocolate dessert"?!? Thank you!!!!!! This is it, without the nuts. I might try it without the traditional crust and do the no-bake Oreo cookie crust. My DD would LOVE that change.

It's reaaaaaaally good on a giant (whole roll of dough) baked chocolate chip cookie as the base! YUMMMM! And at holiday time, I add crushed Andes mints to the top!

I see it's already been posted. I think every family calls it something different. My aunt called it "Crunchy Pudding" because of the crust. So our whole family calls it Crunchy Pudding. It's soooo good!

This is a yummy dessert and many of my family members request it for their birthdays as previous posters have mentioned.
I have had it with chocolate, lemon and pistachio pudding.

This is my husband’s favorite dessert. My mom always made it with pistachio pudding so that is how we do it.
