What is going on? I'm in Minneapolis and the price of eggs is crazy. Again. I feel like I'm living in Alaska or a desert island where food is difficult to come by. Are they priced crazy where you live also? Just read that it's bird flu or something similar. Didn't they get their flu shot?

I just paid $8.99 for a 30 pack at Costco - large size. The grocery stores here have the same for about $9.50. I'm in Southern Ontario....

Kroger is running a special this week, $1.99 for a dozen, with their digital coupon.

Yes, we are in the mid to high $4.00 per dozen here.
These are some of the reasons I’ve heard/read about…meaning it is not necessarily because of one particular thing…but, truthfully, who knows? 🤷🏻♀️😄
November and December have the highest demand for eggs The Bird Flu birds displaced by floods and fires regular inflation/higher production cost.
The only reasons I totally don’t think play into it are the conspiracy theories from many that it is because of politics only.

I have read it is mainly the bird flu. It's not just going to be eggs. Chickens, your turkey for thanksgiving next year is going to be unreal. The new administration isn't going to be able to spin this one.

I'm in Minneapolis and the price of eggs is crazy. So what is the price? I'm south of Minneapolis by half an hour. At Cub, eggs are currently $3.99 for a dozen large eggs. 2 weeks ago I paid $3.99 for an 18 pack of Eggland's Best on sale. Thank God my sister has chickens and in a pinch it's a short drive for cheap eggs.

Here in Western New York at our Wegmans they are $4.99 for 12 eggs. At Tops, for a dozen, they are $4.59. That’s a huge jump from two weeks ago.

I noticed higher prides as well. I assume there is a bird flu outbreak again but could be wrong.

I just paid $3.99 for a dozen at Kroger. I don't buy them often enough to know if that is a large increase or not.

Yes I notice the price hike on eggs too. I usually buy the cheapest (nothing fancy) and it is close to 4.00/dozen. I did score some eggs for 1.61/dozen because it was missing one egg. Heck I'll take 11 eggs for that. lol

Eggs just randomly keep showing up in my fridge! LOL So many people raise eggs around me, that the overflow just shows up sometimes. Checked at my Walmart and a dozen Eggland eggs are $3.68, while the Great Value brand is MORE at $3.97. That's weird. How is that a political issue? Raw milk is a big political issue here, in that the nut job MAGA people think raw milk is better for them (it's not) and demand it. Our lovely governor passed the law to make it legal to sell it here a couple years ago. I think anyone that is giving raw milk to their children should be considered child abusers. The fact that bird flu can be passed in raw milk (a child did get it from raw milk in California) is the least worry on that. Why would anyone want to feed that to their children with the risks associated with it? It is not 'healthier' as they try to claim.

I’m in the Twin Cities too and at Costco two days ago I think they were $4.97 for a pack of 18 which would be about $3.13 a dozen. The 60 count packs at the business Costco are usually a little less per dozen. The thing I’m more alarmed about is the price of butter which has never really come back down to anything close to prepandemic levels. Recently it was running about $15.99 for four pounds, now it is back at $13.99 which IMO is still high. I remember stocking up on butter years ago and freezing it when it was something crazy like $6.50 for that same pack of four pounds. My DH thought I was nuts and I was only wishing I had more freezer space!
Another thing I’ve been tracking pretty close is the price of chocolate chips because I go through a lot of them. There is currently a cocoa bean shortage and as a result Costco stopped offering their house brand of semi sweet chips because they couldn’t price them competitively. They’ve been selling Nestlé since then and I bought three giant bags (72 oz) several months ago when they were selling for $12 something a bag. Now they’re up around $14 or so a bag, so I’m glad I stocked up when I did.

$5.92 for 18 count Eggland eggs today at Sam's Club.
I think part of the increase is cookie baking for Christmas. Butter always goes up in December too.

A dozen has been $4+ for a while, 18 is $6+. Eggland's Best have been out of my acceptable price range for the last six months.
Bird flu + an all eggs must be cage free law passed in Washington last year + plus the holidays...
There is also a sign above the egg cooler that if you buy more than one carton the price for the second carton is substantially more, probably to prevent hoarding.

I am west of Houston. If I get eggs at Walmart in Sealy, 60 count is $19.26. But if I drive 20 minutes into Kroger in Katy, the same eggs are $11.55. I also get Organic Milk because I use so little milk and with organic, the expiration date is usually around 2 months. So Walmart is $6.98 and Kroger is $6.29.
Both the eggs and milk prices have been like this at Walmart for months! So, I have been doing my shopping at Kroger since just these 2 items alone is worth the savings. And my drive is about the same distance!

You know it's bad when eggs are $3.95 a dozen at Aldi. At Aldi.
Really miss the how I used to pay .65 a dozen. Oh how I bitched when they went up to $1.29. Now I would gladly pay that for a dozen eggs.
I was complaining to DH about the price of eggs the other day, but he pointed out that we often have breakfast for supper, and even $3.99 for a protein source for 3 adults is pretty reasonable.
So, as a protein source, the price is not too hard to swallow. However, once I start my holiday baking, I am sure I will start complaining again.

I paid $4.15 CAD for a dozen on Sunday in Southern Alberta for the cheapest ones (im not an egg purist or snob when it comes to free range, colour, etc). I just about fainted when I saw that price. Last time I bought them they were just over $3. But when I look at some of the US prices and add the 45-50% on, I think I may have a gotten a deal.

In CO, in addition to everything else, as of the end of the year all eggs have to be cage free. I bought eggs right before Thanksgiving, I think they were $4.50 / dozen. But King Soopers had signs up apologizing for the mostly empty shelves, because they are changing suppliers due to the new law. H5N1 is no joke. The mortality rate in animals susceptible so far is high, 50% or higher. That includes cats. Human transmission is the big worry for the scientists, for obvious reasons, but I suspect everyone is overlooking the potential human trauma of a Thanos like snap affecting the pet population, even if all most humans get is pink eye. www.scientificamerican.com/article/bird-flu-is-infecting-pet-cats-heres-what-you-need-to-know/

How is that a political issue? Um, I didn't write the article, but RFKJr promotes his drinking raw milk. Major issues in safety and what would happen without the FDA monitoring food safety and necessary recalls to save lives! I should have worded that differently. What I should have said it's ridiculous that the farm is calling this a political issue rather than a public health issue. I just found out that my parents are buying and drinking raw milk. My head just about popped off when my mom told me. I think she buys it through her church. She does not even want to hear about how dangerous it is, and she's a registered nurse! This is such a hot button issue for me right now.
