Sitting here pondering stuff when my iPhone made this really loud noise. It was the alarm telling me an earthquake had been detected and I need to get under something. Another alarm sounded giving me a tsunami warning. I didn’t feel a thing. Finally This popped up on twitter… Santa Rosa Fire Department… ’A 6.6 Earthquake has occurred off the coast of Norther California. Visit earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev… for information on the quake and srcity.org/455/Earthquakes for preparedness information” In looking at the map it appears the epicenter was off the Sonoma County coast. That is why I got the alarms. x.com/santarosafire/status/1864746852119363728?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nwIts now at 7.0 ABC News… ”BREAKING: TSUNAMI WARNING issued following preliminary magnitude 7.0 earthquake WNW of Petrolia! #BayArea” x.com/sandhyaabc7/status/1864746830686515222?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nwGoof to know alarms work. But boy are they loud.

I have yet to get an alert as we have had several in Ontario and Fontana. Not sure if I am not close enough but have it set up.

This is getting serious
”Tsunami waves are expected to reach the coast in San Francisco around 12:10 pm. Tsunami sirens are going off along the coastline in parts of Northern California.” Waves may already be impacting Eureka and Fort Bragg.” So far one aftershock of 3.7

Now it’s 7.3…
ABC News..
”A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake has struck off the coast of California, triggering tsunami sirens and prompting a tsunami warning for the western coastline, including the San Francisco Bay Area. The National Tsunami Warning Center has confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude and issued a warning about the potential for powerful waves and strong currents. Residents in coastal areas are strongly advised to evacuate immediately, move to higher ground or inland, and avoid coastal waters until authorities confirm it is safe to return.”
”🚨#BREAKING: Tsunami sirens and warnings are going off issued for the western coastline after a powerful 7.3 earthquake struck “

It was off the coast of Eureka/Humboldt County about 150 miles north of here. I think it was upgraded to a 7.0. My dd said there was also a 5.8 in the Geysers area 40 miles northeast of here just before that one. I was in my therapist office on the second floor of a Victorian building in downtown Santa Rosa. Experienced some swaying and just got the notice from the Sheriff office to stay away from the coast and coastal rivers.

now given the type of earthquake it was, and that it was on the particular fault, it is unlikely to create an tsunami. but being prepared is better than not.
we all got the alert.. my kid in sf, my kid in wash dc (who lived in sf) and us sitting in new zealand, with alerts on our phone.

Well that was exciting and a reminder of what it’s like to live in earthquake country. But those alarms are loud. ”The tsunami Warning is canceled for the coastal areas of California and Oregon. No tsunami danger presently exists for this area. This will be the final U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center message for this event. Refer to tsunami.gov for more information.” x.com/nws_ntwc/status/1864761274007240888?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

We've been trying to figure out which earthquake we felt. We got alerts for both.

Was there also a 5.8 in Cobb? Yes I believe it was originally mapped at 5.8, but now it is 4.1 about 3 minutes after the one in Petrolia.

Yesterday further out from the shoreline were some more decent sized earthquakes as well.

Hopefully the aftershocks stay aftershocks.
The earthquake we had out in the desert of southern CA back in 2019 was a foreshock at 6.5 or 6.8. later we had the 7.2 quake.

Stay safe, Peas!
DS2 has been getting daily earthquakes for the last few days (small ones). I was just telling him last night I was worried that a bigger one was on the horizon with all the little ones they have been having over the past week.

My kid's school district has an elementary school right near the bottom tip of the SF Bay, so they evacuated the school to be safe.
I know someone who works for the USGS and they posted on Facebook that the type of quake it was would not cause a tsunami but they would rather be safe than sorry so they issued the warning. I was in Costco and everyone's phone went off. I checked it and nobody left the store that I could tell. We're about 5 miles from the Bay so it would have to be a massive tsunami to affect us.

I'm glad for the West Coast Peas that the tsunami was downgraded. Reading about this this afternoon, I learned something about coastal earthquakes. That when the tectonic plates move horizontally the risk for tsunami is less than with vertical movement. Makes sense, but didn't have to think about it given where I live.
