DH slipped in the snow and twisted his knee. He thinks he may have a torn ligament.
Should we put heating pad or ice on it?
He doesn't want to get out because of the road conditions. I doubt the doctor's office is even open today.

Ice, elevation and rest but if it feels as serious as a torn ligament he will obviously have to get proper attention as soon as he can.

Ugh I think I'd get him to Urgent Care. Most of the roads around here are just wet with no ice.

Just wanted to let you know that I have an uncle for slipped in his driveway last weekend trying to clear the snow. He hurt his ankle but once he got up he was trying to 'walk it of'. Finally went to the dr yesterday and he is now scheduled for surgery next week. Walking on the injury only exasperated the break and caused more issues that will most likely take longer to heal.

Ice for the 1st 72 hours. With any sort of swelling always ice, never heat. Heat is used mainly for chronic issues. I don't know if this is an urgent visit, but I would make a dr appt when your weather improves.

He is being his usual stubborn self and won't go anywhere to seek medical help. The knee and hip specialist he has seen before is closed today. (I am sure they made that decision when all the schools closed for 2 days. )

Hope he's okay! Definitely ice for an acute injury (you want to limit blood flow to stop swelling and pain) and then later on heat for something more chronic (to increase blood flow and healing.)

UGH So sorry. Ice always at the onset of an injury to help with swelling.

Go to the ER if he thinks he has a torn ligament.

Go to the ER if he thinks he has a torn ligament. I have been saying that since he fell. He won't go. I am not capable of dragging him to the car.

Get some Ibuprophen or Aleeve down him to prevent further swelling. Wrap it tightly and make him stay off it. Many years ago, I had a knee injury and tried to walk it off thus making it a serious knee injury that took a year to overcome. I currently have a similar injury that's not nearly as bad because I knew what to do.

Monday I finally got him to his knee physician this afternoon. (actually the PA, but....) x rays were done. Luckily he did not break anything. He does have bad sprains in the knee and foot. He is to keep off them, keep them elevated as much as possible and return in 3 weeks to see how much has healed. The PA wanted him to check with the ankle/foot doctor next week. Not related exactly to the injury, but I have an appointment on the 23rd to have a estimate given for a chairlift for our stairs. Before this happened I thought we needed to do that, and now we will. He needs it for healing and stability. I think I will use it for laundry baskets.
