www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/89897/good-bonesOne of my favorites. Feels appropriate today. Good Bones by Maggie Smith Life is short, though I keep this from my children. Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways, a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children. For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world is at least half terrible, and for every kind stranger, there is one who would break you, though I keep this from my children. I am trying to sell them the world. Any decent realtor, walking you through a real shithole, chirps on about good bones: This place could be beautiful, right? You could make this place beautiful. ETA: How typical that someone felt the need to mark this Politics. Where is the political speech here, please?

Yes, so much yes. As an educator, I constantly feel "I am trying to sell them the world." It could be beautiful. I'm holding on to that today. Thank you, Merge.

In a similar vein, I was reading Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes last night.

HOW IS THIS POLITICAL? the person who labeled it? You're an asshole. All I can figure is that it is because it related to the arts and the other side wants to do away with all of that?

Thanks for sharing. I hope I'm not the only one who saw the author is Maggie Smith and thought there was a side to the late actor I didn't know about.

Marked political for two reasons, I'd guess, the first being that the person who did it wants to get a rise out of merge bc they know it will; and because it was posted with "feels appropriate on this day", which we of course know what that refers to.
So, whatever.

So, whatever. It's also Martin Luther King Jr. Day so maybe it has more to do with that? Is that political?

I don't care, I don't even see tags. Just saying let's own it when we do it. And, never let 'em see you sweat...the Great Anonymous Political Tagger just does it because it obviously upsets some people.

Anything at all can turn political here in an instant. I'm pretty sure we don't really need tags at all to be honest.

If a brief comment is supposedly “getting a rise” out of me, I’d suggest whoever it is hasn’t seen some of my posts where I was actually pissed off. And if we’re tagging posts now based on what someone thinks the poster might have meant, that’s just silly.

I don't disagree, but you did make a whole thread about it once, and people that play these games don't forget. And you mentioned it again in the OP. So, obviously, it does get a rise out of you. I'm just saying don't let them know it so easily. People get all bent about it all the time.
