I signed up for the free access - mostly hoping to up my cardmaking game a little and hopefully get inspired to use some of the stamps/dies/stencils I've collected.
Anyone else planning on watching any of it?

I took a look, the heavy FOMO "upgrade now and get this stuff for $$$!" page turned me right off.

I thought I had clicked on the ticket a few weeks ago, but yesterday I received an email saying I was "missing out" so I signed up. Not sure how much time I will have to follow along with everything. What I have done in the past is quickly scan through the classes offered each day, then save a pic of the projects I like. That way I can come back when I have time.

I took a look, the heavy FOMO "upgrade now and get this stuff for $$$!" page turned me right off. I just ignore the upgrade pressure and stick to the freebie version. I’ve been card making for decades, so I don’t “need” any of it, but sometimes I learn a new trick or two, or see a product that I like.

Mm, the email thing didn't work for me, but I can't be bothered to try after seeing all those ads. I bet the classes are going to be more of the same, so I'll take my attention elsewhere. But it's great you're smart enough to ignore the FOMO! More power to you. I'm just a bit disappointed that a "Free class, use what you have!" candy coated shell is hiding yet another "Buy our stuff!" filling. Which, it's not unfair. I understand trying to make a living, but the bait and switch feels a lil' icky.

I signed up for the free version. I skimmed through each class this morning, but slow enough to get a good feel for what they were teaching. Some may love the presentations, especially since they are about using your stash, but I didn’t really feel that I learned anything new.
There was a lot of emphasis today on using a sketch different ways, inking, etc. They might be helpful or interesting for some crafters, especially those who are newer to card making, but I wasn’t particularly inspired by any of today’s offerings. For context, though, I’ve been a stamper/card maker for over 35 years, and I worked/taught for several years at the LSS where I used to live, so it takes a lot to impress me.

Watched Justine's video on rotating sketches - as I'm primarily a scrapbooker, I didn't have the right sort of stamps in my stash nor did I have embossing supplies. But I made it work with dies, embossing folders, and patterned paper watched Sam Colcott's next. Didn't follow the directions entirely - I put my stacked shapes on a rectangular card

And you can basically find the same kinds of video on YT without being inundated with emails. That is why I have never signed up for these "get your ticket" classes. The peas have noted all the emails they have gotten. No thanks.

I like your adaptation of Sam’s class, Linda. That was the only one that really caught my attention. I want to try this using stickers or diecuts for dgs’s birthday card. I was thinking because it will be hand delivered that it can be a wonky shape. But I like how you tamed the design to stay within the amiable card borders.

Thanks grammadeebtw - I posted this here on the scrapbooking not the card board on purpose. I didn't think the actual cardmakers would have much interest (as seen above) but thought there might be scrapbookers, like myself, who might enjoy some of the presentations. I also thought about artbabe who is always asking us to post more new threads. Yes - you can find similar on Youtube. Yes, there will probably be a bunch of emails I'll need to unsubscribe from. Yes, the ideas and techniques are likely nothing new and aimed more at beginners not experts. BUT for me - I'm enjoying setting aside a weekend for cardmaking and getting inspired and hopefully learning a few new ideas along the way. I can't afford to sign up for the cool cardmaking and scrapbooking events where you get a box of cool stuff and spend a day or weekend crafting - this is more in my budget and allows me to use my stash. It's not for everyone.

I understand trying to make a living, but the bait and switch feels a lil' icky. there is a push to sign up for the VIP version which has extra perks and classes I guess plus you don't have to watch the videos within the 24 hr timeframe. But other than that - the three tutorials I've watched so far haven't been pushing 'buy our stuff' really. Alicia did mention her patreon briefly at the end of her lesson - that was as much 'buy stuff' as I'm seen. But yes - they ARE offering the free tutorials in hopes that you'll like their offerings enough to sign up for some of their paid content - most of which is advertised via the emails afterwards.

No different marketing than SB.com and their “fest” events. This content is free. If you buy something or sign up for something else, that’s totally up to you. I can handle getting emails from Justine. Hoping that signing up for this doesn’t result in a flurry of emails from others, but that only happened when she was promoting a group sponsored event.

Yep, the not-so-subtle advertising is why I can't watch 95% of the scrappy content out there, that and the constant rehash of same-old-thing. It's a personal turnoff, but like I said I fully understand why it's that way - making videos is expensive in terms of equipment, supplies, editing software and time. It's still better than the alternative of you pay $$$ for classes and get the same kind of spiels. I couldn't watch the SB.com content, if it was a drinking game for "everytime you hear SB.com!", every participant would have been dead of alcohol poisoning by the end of it.

I'm with you in that I don't like heavy handed marketing, but I just clicked past it. I did sign up for this (today) because I need inspiration to make cards. Hopefully I'll have time to watch some - I noticed that the presentations are only available for 24 hours each day. I posted this here on the scrapbooking not the card board on purpose. Thank you! it found me!!!

It's not for everyone. Love that! You can definitely limit the number of emails you get by just not claiming the free bonuses which require becoming an email sub. Being forced to watch this weekend and try things out right away is a huge advantage! It gets you taking action, use the info or lose it. And I found the one summit where I signed up for VIP access (because I couldn’t watch that weekend) I wasted a bunch of time watching classes that didn’t really speak to me just so I felt like I got value from the ticket. I hope you and any other card makers or scrappers who participate have fun! Come over to the card side…

These are from Alicia McNamara's presentation - they are print and fussy digital elements to make a set of 6 cards. I've never done anything like that before and I definitely see me using the sketch again in the future. (yes - I had to give my email to get the pdf but I can always unsubscribe) joblackford - I'm really enjoying watching a video and then making the cards right afterwards. I haven't always done that in the past and ended up not going back to make many.

I am not signed up for this one. I do generally seem to like Justine's summits better than Brandi Mahon's though. And while they do sometimes help me use my stash, they also give me insight as to why my stash is sometimes not working for me, why I never seem to choose certain items. So they've led to using what I have, clearer insight as to what I should destash, smarter shopping (not repeating past mistakes because I understand why something wasn't working), and, yeah, a little shopping when I want to try a technique and have nothing in my stash that will work for it.

Wow, those cards are wonderful Linda - and the print and cut elements definitely look like they were worth dealing with an email or two I like that the summits have helped you reflect on what's working in your stash and what isn't Shakti. That's always a struggle.

joblackford - thank you! I really enjoyed working with those print and cut elements which surprised me a little. Shakti -those sound like great insights from previous summits. I'm really enjoying the push to USE stuff like dies and stamps and stencils - I'm also enjoying the challenge of making what I have work even when it's not what the cardmaker suggests. So far the only shopping I've done was to replace my paper trimmer (a necessity since it broke). I am adding some nesting shape dies to my wishlist though. My final card from yesterday's videos (Tania) - I use some pre-printed mixed media look paper because I'm not much of a mixed media person but I did stencil Then my first two videos today. Justine's I had to change a LOT because she stamped and then heat embossed. I don't have heat embossing supplies nor did I have a big enough image stamp. So I die cut the gnome instead. Erin Reed's was about matching cardstock and alcohol markers to patterned paper and she provided printables. The lefthand card is coloured with alcohol markers, the other two are completely from printables and cardstock

Today's presentations are much more stamping and mixed media heavy and I'm finding them much harder and I'm not as happy with my results. I'm a clean and simple scrapper and I tend that way with cards as well. Laurel's presentation used a colour palette and she made three different cards using it. I don't have any layering stencils and couldn't figure out a sub so skipped that one. Tiffany used various sprays to make background paper. I only have 2 distress sprays and no others but I did my best and added a little glitter paste at the end. It's still drying due to the lack of a heating tool. I'll be back later to share the card I made with it. Watching Mary's now - hers is on patterned paper which hopefully will be a bit easier

I am adding some nesting shape dies to my wishlist though. Nesting dies are by far my favourites - so many versatile things you can do with them. One of the first things I went after when I started my collection, and no regrets seven years later. My top recommendations would be a set of nesting rectangles in whatever card front ratio you make the most. Beyond that, circles, squares and domes are all pretty handy to have around.

Linda I’m a huge fan of using patterned paper that looks like mixed media or ink blending. It saves a tons of time so I can make more cards, I don’t really care to do the messy stuff most of the time, and mixed media tends to require a lot of supplies. I like watching Vicki Papaionnou doing her mixed media (she follows a very doable formula) but it takes about half a dozen products/steps just to do the background! I have no problem using patterned papers that give the impression of ink blending as a shortcut. Some of my favorites are Ella and Viv papers at scrapbook.com that look like watercolor washes. Tiffany and Laurel are both very mixed media focused so hopefully the patterned paper class will be more your scene

Thanks Embri - I have circles, hearts, and squares but rectangles and ovals are on the wishlist now. Thanks for the suggestions joblackford. I did end up liking the card I made from Tiffany's class but it was way more involved than I prefer. And yes, patterned paper was more my scene

I am adding some nesting shape dies to my wishlist though. Yeah, I put the type of stamp I didn't have on a mental wish list. Found something similar on retirement sale at Honey Bee and it arrived last week -- must remember to play with it now! But in general I AM more excited to play with things right when they arrive now; that's how I know I'm shopping better, even when I still shop.
