As someone who lives in California I’m all for it. I really think we have reached the point where we aren’t the “United States” anymore and it’s time to acknowledge it and dismantle it into separate countries… Brian Allen… ”BREAKING: California Secretary of State Shirley Weber just gave the green light for a campaign to gather signatures for a vote on California leaving the U.S. and becoming an independent country, per Newsweek. Yes, you read that right—secession is officially on the table. In a nation where dysfunction has become the norm, California is flirting with the idea of cutting ties and going solo. Whether this gains traction or fizzles out, one thing is clear: the cracks in this union aren’t just showing—they’re splitting wide open. Stay tuned, because this is about to ignite one hell of a debate.” x.com/allenanalysis/status/1884341706633392201?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

I mean as far as I can tell Trump’s supporters think the state is terrible so they will be thrilled to let it go, right?

Good luck. Texas has been trying this for years. You're not going anywhere and neither are we.

MTG thinks it’s a good idea if CA left. What she doesn’t get is if CA leaves it takes a chunk of the US economy with it. CA is moving from the 5th largest economy in the world to the 4th largest economy in the world, CA pays the highest amount in Federal Income tax. Take that away from the US economy which would hurt what would be left of the US economy. Chances are good other blue states would follow which could turn what’s left of the US into a 3rd world country. MTG… California Secretary of State has approved a campaign to gather signatures for a petition calling for a vote on if California should secede from the U.S. and become an independent country. Go ahead. That would mean 43 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives would be GONE, giving House Republicans a HUGE majority! And 2 California Democrat U.S. Senators would be GONE making the Republican Senate majority STRONGER. AND if California secedes, the next Democrat presidential candidate would lose California’s 54 electoral college votes. California TDS patients could lead to their own demise. I’m here for it. FAFO.” x.com/repmtg/status/1884341798400844253?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw

I can see some pros and cons for California. Might not turn out the way that you want it to if the corporations don’t stay there but who knows?

You have to wonder how many US citizens would want to state in this newly formed country and give up being US citizens. No more federal tax supplemental income (welfare), medical care, unemployment benefits, supplemental housing assistance, etc. once you swear citizenship to another country, you lose all the rights and freedoms you as a US citizen. All the benefits you receive governmentwise will now come out of your our pocket cash wise or through you new country’s taxes since there probably no Medicare or Medicaid and no SS benefits. Will the business you work remain in business there or relocate? Will there even be a job left to go to? How will schools work, will teachers stay or leave to back to their home country. What about a brand new military, aiforce and navy. The US will take every little bit with them, and how wil this country defend itself? Will you even be able to visit the US at all?
Just a lot of questions that don’t have a lot of appealing answers that California citizens should think seriously about!

katiekaty - surely none of those things are insurmountable; countries all around the world manage to provide all of them for their citizens, so why wouldn’t California if it was to secede? Of course there would be a settling in period but things could still work. You mention “all rights and freedoms” you have as a US citizen - what are they, that people in, say, UK or Canada or Australia or New Zealand or The Netherlands or Belgium or Germany or France (etc) don’t have? What rights and freedoms would California risk losing in this regard? Things like supplemental income, unemployment benefits, emergency housing etc could still be provided, just as it is in all these (and so many more) countries. California has 38 million people, so it could organise these sorts of things just as UK (population 68 million), right through to New Zealand (population 5 million), provide them. You also talk of the equivalent of Medicare and Medicaid having to come out of taxes - that could be true, but it also means the citizens would no longer have to pay the exhorbitant insurance premiums that US citizens have to pay if they want medical and health care, and/or they would no longer be tied to their employment so that they don’t lose insurance benefits. And, as has been proven over and over in so many countries around the world, it is far more cost-effective to have healthcare funded through taxes than through insurance companies.

once you swear citizenship to another country, you lose all the rights and freedoms you as a US citizen. Um, I haven’t sworn anything to anyone and yet I started losing my rights and freedoms in June 2022. And there no telling what will be taken away from me in 2024. So maybe I’m willing to take my chances if secession is really on the table.

How much does CA rely on water that originates in other states?
If there is a heavy reliance, I think that would be a big drawback to independence because you know FF would redirect any water that currently flows to CA to other western states.

California has by far the highest GDP in the world. (Outside of a few tax havens)
And we get most of our water from the Sierra Nevada.
