This is "going around" as a way to save some money each week. I think it is good, but would be difficult if your budget was very tight to begin with.

I have seen that going around too for the last couple of years. I like the concept of it but could never implement saving $20-$52 each week. I live on one income and while I do ok, I do not have that amount of extra money to save. I wouldn't be able to buy groceries.

Maybe you could do it for only 1/2 year.

I am going to try out something new this year. Every day I will check my wallet and if I have any $5.00 bills I will put them in an envelope. Once I reach a certain amount, I haven't decided, I will take those $5.00 bills and deposit them into my savings account.

Great idea...but for this unemployed old lady, there isn't enough left over each week.

It would be easier for me to just set aside $115 per month instead of keeping track of each week. Plus, easier to save more certain months than others. It's a lot of money each week in December.

I've read that some people do it backwards. That way, it's easier to do it in December when it's already an unusually expensive month for most.

I have done this for the last two years. I find that it is fairly easy to do. The way DH's deductions are set up, by July 1st, his unemployment and Canada pension deductions are all paid up for the year, so his pay increases from July to December. So starting with the smallest amounts at the start of the year works well for us.
It was nice to have that chunk set aside - it helped pay for the girls' driver training classes!

I read that someone put all the numbers in a jar and each week pulled one and that is what she saved that week. I think I may try that since the end of the year always has extra expenses for us.

I think, regardless of the amount and the way you do it, ANY money saved is a bonus!

Last year I had a "found money" purse. Any time I found money in the pocket of a jacket or pants I put it in that small purse. I kept silver change that I found too - usually while doing laundry. It added up pretty fast. I used it to buy my daughter's prom dress and then used it for my garage sale money in the summer.

I did the $5.00 thing one year and I was surprised at how easy it was to accumulate a decent amount of saved money quickly.

But it's the same as all those other save fast/pay down debt fast things floating around the web - they're not for most people who genuinely need savings. I love the "How we paid off our $27,000 in six months" pin on Pinterest. All I can think about is, if you are able to pay off that kind of debt in that little time, then you had a money mismanagement problem, not an income problem.

I didn't always remember to check and I had to dip into the jar a couple times, but I ended up with about $100 which was nice. Im going to try to be more consistent about it in 2015

I did this this year, but started at the $52 dollars and worked backwards. There were weeks I had to mix it up due to my budget (ie put in $ amount I had available, and then the correct amount when I could). I had it printed off and marked the weeks I paid already so I kept up and knew what amounts were in. I also did lump sums when I could (when I got a bonus at work, a commission chq or a gift). I did get all weeks checked off.

I usually do a "Christmas envelope". I try to stick $10 in it every week. Sometimes I put more, sometimes I forget to put money in. I try to reconcile it, every couple months.
I aim for $400. $10 a week x 40 weeks.

I am doing it for a trip to Europe... I started last year... and I just check off the amount I put in each week... I did start back wards.. then when taxes were due i couldn't afford the amount for a few weeks. and that is when I get creative I doing it in 2015 too!

I like the concept, too, but I'm barely making ends meet right now. I took a significant pay cut earlier this year when I had to get a new job and I'm struggling like I've never struggled before.

My husband gives me fun money in Google wallet. Then something *always* happens, and the money gets used for something else we need. No big deal, I keep money in the account just for those times.
I do want to save up some money on the side for emergencies and other uses--like I want to take my niece to Chicago and buy her an American Girl doll.
I'm going to start taking the cash in my wallet and hide it somewhere. Do that every month, and when I get a decent amount, I'm going to start depositing it into one of those prepaid cards--like the one that Walmart sells so you get the free money that they offer when you use their card.
If dh and I need the money, it's there--but it will also be extra that dh won't count on when he does the budget. I just think we need some extra savings, and also get tired of him spending money on stuff and there's none left for me. --He likes going to those thrift stores and has bought more stereo equipment he "says" is for me. I'm half deaf, I can't tell that the TV is actually "in" stereo!

I always tried to do this, and ended up spending what I saved by April. I'm not a very good saver. Maybe I'll try again this year.

I'm giving it a go this year. I've opened up a 2nd share in my credit union acct that I will just quickly transfer money into each week. The only thing I'll do different is I'm going to deposit backwards, largest amt first, ect.

My goal is to pay off our credit cards and a $17k mtg this year. That will take some doubling up on mtg. payments.

I do the $1 thing - any time you have a dollar bill or coins, put it in savings. I store mine in a screw type lid plastic water jug that I cut a slit into. It's in an awkward spot so I can put the money in, but would have to move a bunch of knickknacks to get into. It's such an annoying spot that I only get into the jar once or twice a year.

I'm going to do that challenge. Thanks for sharing!
One thing I always do is never spend change. It goes in a jar and then to the bank a couple of times a year and I usually have $100 or so in it. Another thing I do is every time I get cash from an ATM, I save whatever bills I have in my wallet and that adds up too.

I haven't decided if I'll do this. I wanted to do it last year but I forgot too many times so I just gave up. One thing me and some family members do to save is collect ones/singles with a specific letter on them. The letter in the circle that tells which Federal Reserve Bank it originated from. I save the letters "J" "B" and "L". Last year I collected about 350 bucks this way. Not a lot, but enough to use as spending money on vacay.

We use debit cards for nearly everything. Every weekday at lunch time I log in to the bank and look at the balance. I take the amount necessary to round down to the next dollar and deposit that in savings. So, for example, if my bank account says I have $835.24, I put the 24 cents in savings. I do this everyday. It really helps me feel like I am doing something to save that little bit extra.

I don't have enough money to do the other challenge.

There is no way we could afford that, but it's a good idea for those that can.
