I don’t Twitter, FB (only use groups for my crafts), TikTok, etc. the only SM I have is IG and I use it sporadically now.
Mainstream media is how I get the majority of my news (and yes I check international sites such as BBC, Reuters, Al Jazeera). I’d like to follow more independent (reliable, responsible, and not crazy alarmist stuff) news sources. Do you all have news sources/independent folks that you’d recommend I follow?
If it helps to know, I just joined Substack today, and have had Blusky for a few weeks.
Thank you so much ❤️

Have you tried YouTube? I follow more left-leaning YouTubers, but there are news outlets on there too.

Texas TribunePhiladelphia InquirerHere in Colorado, a bunch of former Denver Post journalists started The Colorado SunAlthough, I disagree with their COVID origin conclusions, ProPublicaSince getting on Bluesky, I've been following Taniel who runs a publication focused on Election coverage. Really drills down to the local level.

Really drills down to the local level. ProRepublica is independent & non-profit, a nice change from billionaire owned papers. Have you tried NPR or PBS? I like Heather Cox Richardson on substack. She’s a historian and has an interesting perspective and interesting way to tie events together. She posts sources and I have always found her to be reliable.

I recently joined Substack and I follow: Sharon McMahon, Charlotte Clymer, Allison Gill, Dan Pfeiffer, and Emily Amick. I'm not familiar with all of these names but I have read Charlotte and Allison and my problem is that they aren't journalists. They've gotten into activism due to their own circumstances, and they try, but they can fall prey to the stuff that ends up feeding the outrage machine from the left. I put them in my "trust, but verify" column.

Substack has been a great news resource. You can subscribe to people and get their columns emailed or just follow and scroll through like you would Twitter. Once you follow a couple people you would like to read, they will suggest others. The suggestions have been great and I have found a lot of people I’ve enjoyed reading.
I just started following Dr. Zachary Rubin on Substack. He’s an immunologist who gives many updates about what’s happening health wise, recalls, etc. since the CDC isn’t allowed to communicate with us anymore. A lot of good information.

Another vote for Heather Cox Richardson. Some days I just want to read her daily letter and forget about the rest of the so-called news…

A third vote for Heather Cox Richardson, I get her daily email. She says she writes news that people will need to know happened in the future. (Not a direct quote.)

One more vote for Heather Cox Richardson, PBS and NPR. I also recently subscribed to The Contrarian on Substack, formed by a group of journalists who left Washington Post after TPTB kissed the ring.

Substack, NPR, AP. As for individual accounts, I agree with the ones mentioned here. I also started following Jim Acosta on Substack. I appreciated his middle finger send off he gave CNN before he left.

I started following NPR the first time he was in office and haven't left. Aside from the weather and or local emergencies that's just about the only place I get my news.

I follow Jessica Yellen, News Not Noise. She’s a long time journalist and tries to remain neutral.
She occasionally contrasts how a subject is being covered by various outlets, a feature I appreciate. I thought I knew the basics of this, but she points out some subtle differences I might not catch.

For non-alternative news I usually stick to the Atlantic, but in terms of boots-on-the-ground, I can highly recommend Beau of the Fifth Column/Belle of the Ranch: www.youtube.com/c/BeauoftheFifthColumn/videosNo-nonsense couple who covers daily current affairs without any fear-mongering or grandstanding.

I enjoy podcasts as I have trouble sitting and reading but can listen while I walk the dog or clean. I recently started listening to Tangle Their daily podcasts do a short list of some items in the news and then they will select one item and share what the left and right are saying about it and then do their “take”. At the end of the year they go back through their predictions/opinions and grade them. They have a newsletter as well but I haven’t tried it. The other one I like is Left, Right and Center.

NPR/PBS has troubled me in the last few years. I feel they have a strong bias to the left, when I am wanting a more unbiased report. Not all - but there is certain some that I feel need to be taken with a bit of caution or grain of salt.
I really felt justified in my feelings about them when they interviewed "V" Spehar who does the "Under the Desk News" on TikTok and other socials. She really got thrown under the bus and her interview was cut and pieced together to fit their agenda. She had the receipts. She is uber left leaning also. That really made me feel like my 'somewhat' distrust of what NPR/PBS has become was confirmed. I can't say there is one source I feel 100% trust in.
I still listen to NPR/PBS and do not discount them, but I feel like I need other sources also. I hate Fox News and such, but I feel like some attention has to be paid to them. I do not say you have to believe them, but you do need to hear what is said. But oh lord it can be so insufferable!

It seems there is a fine line between "unbiased" and sanewashing crazy stuff.

ground.news/Not so much news source, but a platform that presents the news stories and gives their political slant. I have not joined yet, but check out the free options. I am always interested in the blind spot story, like the real things that are happening while mainstream is blowing up about Trump's buzz words.

I have come to a point where I’m trying to wean myself off more and more of the news. I found myself feeling in crisis mode all the time. The past two weeks have convinced me this is one things I can’t do anything about, we are all just along for the ride, most days the less I know, the better I feel. I get the cliff notes during the week and a complete news blackout on weekends.
The TV is on, so if something really critical happens I will be alerted, but I just can’t take in all bla, bla all day anymore. It was affecting my mental and physical wellbeing.

The best news aggregate I've found is allsides.com. Yes, it's mainstream news but it collects from all bias' and presents them by topic, side-by-side so you can see the bias pop right out. You also can rate the articles according to what you think their bias is. It's helped me to be able to read between the lines so to speak.
