I know this was mentioned in the 90 page "what shows are you watching" thread, but we watched it on Saturday and I thought it deserved its own thread.
What did you think of it?
I thought it gave us a lot to think about in terms of how trans people are still not recognised/validated by so many, and I like that message, but I also thought that some of the situations they ended up in (OK, TX, IN for example) could have been EXTREMELY dangerous without a Hollywood star and a camera/production crew there. I get that was for making the show interesting, but it also made me incredibly uncomfortable, which may have been the point!
Being lucky enough to live in a blue area of a blue state, I don't see as much of the trans hate but I know it's horribly alive and well in other areas and is now being endorsed by our government, if you want to call it a government.
Thoughts?

I thought it was very interesting in that it showed what trans women have to go through. I also wondered if having a film crew helped in the dicy situations that they were sometimes facing. Certainly opened my eyes and thought Harper was brave.

Thoughts? This is on our list to watch, but I did want to say that we just recently watched "Clean Slate". It's about a trans woman showing up on her Dad's porch after 23 years of being estranged. He lives in Mobile, AL to add another layer into the comedy.

It was good. It did give me things to think about but to be honest, I was surprised how welcoming most everyone was. I expected a lot more people having issues with Harper. I really felt for her, it must have been really scary to do that. I do not like Will Farrell but I thought he did a great job supporting her.

This...I think if there were no camera crew there, it might have been very different. Especially in the bar with the FJB flag and the confederate flag.

I didn't think about it from that point of view. I agree with this.

I get that was for making the show interesting, but it also made me incredibly uncomfortable, which may have been the point! It was the point. I thought the show was well done and hope that for some it humanized who a trans person is and what the often really complicated decision and process looks like. FWIW, it took a neighbor transitioning for my pretty black & white, narrow minded (likely on the autism spectrum) dad to accept the idea that some people were assigned a sex identity at birth that does not fit their gender identity. Dad 100% believed anyone transitioning was doing it for attention and/or mentally ill. To see someone he knew quietly transition after retiring from a decorated military career was eye opening.
