I have been eating sushi since 1986 and have gone months without it and then eating it regularly. I am a big fan of it but only the stuff I want to eat. I am not Epicurious. I am epitimid.
Tell me about yourself and have you developed a taste for the raw fish cuisine of Japan!

As a kid, I did not like fish, raw or cooked. I got that from my dad who would not eat fish so my mom never cooked fish. The only sushi I liked was inari, which is nicknamed “football”, because it is just seasoned rice inside a fried tofu shell. Now, I love sushi. Any kind of raw tuna is my favorite. What is funny is that I don’t care for cooked tuna. For cooked fish, I rather have salmon. And I won’t eat raw salmon because of the worm issues. In summary, yes, I like raw fish.

I like my sushi like I like my coffee….with a bunch of extra crap. Spicy mayo, jalapeños, cream cheese, tempura crumbs…those are my favorites. My favorite fish are any kind of tuna, yellowtail and salmon. I also love Poke bowls.

My favorite food and I like pretty much everything. I lived next to a tiny Japanese mall in grad school that had an amazing counter that was very cheap and my roommate had gone to school in Japan, and it has stuck with me.

Take it or leave it. I don’t crave it, I don’t dislike it. I won’t go out of my way to eat it.

That said I have met maybe 5,000 people over 40 years and she is the only one ever. The number of non-meat eaters is huge.

I love sushi (but truth be told, I love poke even more). Uni is the only kind of sushi I’ve had that I don’t care for. I don’t remember when I first had sushi, but we had it at our wedding 25 years ago, so it must have been well before that.

We werent raised on fish of any kind other than the really awful minced fish fish sticks of the 70s or fish and chips on rare occasion. As adults, we try to eat some fish, but sushi is not for us. I cant have raw fish due to an autoimmune disease, but Im sure we could try some cooked sushi. It just isnt something we seek out.

I'm pretty particular about it. I do not like shrimp or crab or whitefish. I don't like cooked salmon, but for some reason, I like raw salmon. I like tuna. I do not like the "sushi" with fried crunchy bread stuff, or cream cheese. Avocado, cucumber, radish, rice, those things I like. Must have the pickled ginger, a tiny tiny bit of wasabi, and soy sauce. Tuna sashimi is ok also.

I LOVE almost all American sushi. I have never had authentic Japanese sushi, which, based on documentaries, I may not be as fond of. I could not eat a fresh octopus; it seems hypocritical, but here I am. And I would likely skip a few other sushi/sashimi delicacies.
We have sushi and/or sashimi about once a week. In our area, lunch is the best time to eat because most Japanese restaurants offer lunch pricing, which is very reasonable as a workday lunch option.

I love sushi but due to an autoimmune disorder I’ve developed I can’t tolerate soy anymore, so I don’t eat it very often anymore. I also love poke. I don’t remember ever not liking sushi. I started with California rolls and maki rolls when I was a kid.
One of my favorite rolls is a veggie roll from a local place with asparagus, carrot, green onion, shishito pepper, avocado, and topped with jalapeño and lemon slices.

I probably would not go to a Sushi restaurant. There is an upscale grocery chain in MN where I will order sushi at their counter. We get a few different kinds to share. It’s good for a happy hour on the deck. I like it, but I don’t love it.

I have never had "good" sushi ... only grocery store ... fish wasn't eaten in my house growing up and my ex and dd's don't like it either so we never had it ... now I am at a place in my life that I could try it but the opportunity never arises! I love all fish and seafood so I am assuming I would like sashimi ... I am not fond of wasabi or anything spicy ...

I like sushi but typically avoid the dishes with raw fish/seafood eta: I first met sushi while living in Hawaii. Italy had introduced me to a variety of seafood that had not been part of my growing up menu. I grew up almost a thousand miles from the ocean so seafood at the time was very limited and expensive. I ate a fair amount of freshwater fish like catfish, perch and some trout. Shrimp was a Christmas treat and canned tuna was on rotation for sandwiches (mixed heavily with diced boiled eggs)

My dad grew up in the eastern part of California. Fresh fish was not readily available, at least back then. His family was also poor and fish would have been a luxury item. Oh, the only fish he did eat was canned tuna.

So don't let the rolls and other sushi options put you off for the sake of wasabi. In the US you will get the lableing or menu in English so you can see what has spicy sauces on it.

I've tried it five or six times but I just can't handle cold sticky rice and the whole raw fish yucky soy sauce bit. I prefer my seafood and my rice cooked and hot and after years of being Gluten Free I like it with Coconut Amino Acids

wasabi is normally served to the side, not an integral part that you can't avoid. You do have to be careful. Many places out here will put the wasabi between the rice and the fish. And they will also give you even more on the side. I usually check, and if there is wasabi already on the sushi, I don't put any in my soy sauce. but I just can't handle cold sticky rice Generally, at a sushi bar/restaurant, the rice is lukewarm to room temperature. It is not cold. But then, when you say cold, I think of refrigeration cold, which is what grocery store sushi rice is like.

The nori (seaweed) you will enjoy. If’s fishy. If you think you are getting a steak you aren’t. There are lots of cooked sushi items and you will love it. I dislike fish and love sushi! I had shrimp, hamachi, and tuna (something) and it was beyond delicate. If you eat cooked fish sushi is your thing!

Love it. I didn't grow up eating it in Omaha, obviously, so I'm not sure when I first tried it. It would have been well after we moved to Houston. I actually don't like all the extra stuff like spicy mayo - I want a really nice piece of fish with just a little flavor/seasoning from the sushi chef, on a little block of slightly warm, fresh sushi rice. (That said, I'll also happily eat a tray of grocery store sushi for something quick - I'm not a snob.)
Someday I'll splurge on the Omakase table at our favorite sushi place. I am an adventurous eater and would love to have a chef show me stuff I wouldn't necessarily have ordered for myself. DH hates sushi, so I'll have to find a friend who wants to splash out on that with me.
Also a huge fan of ceviche, which isn't "raw" in the same way but also isn't cooked with heat.

I love fish but haven't ever tried sushi - not particularly interested to be honest. I don't like rice and I didn't like the few seaweed items I've tried (thanks Yums boxes).
Growing up, I didn't eat fish at home. My mum hated fish and didn't cook it - she did do tuna mayo sandwiches though. We had fish sticks and fish cakes on nights that my parents weren't eating with us and I would get fish and chips takeaway with dad. I didn't realize it until recently that my younger sister didn't get the fish and chips growing up - apparently when we got fish, she and mum would get fried chicken. Once we moved to the States - the fish and chips place was right next to KFC.

I only like california rolls. I don't like wasabi, I can't handle much spice at all.
I was just watching an old episode of King of Queens. Carrie's work husband told Doug, her real husband, that he and Carrie went out for sushi for lunch. Doug replied "good, that's one less time I'll have to go. Cooked cow better than raw fish."

I also love ceviche. The variety of ceviche out here in California is mind blowing…the different fish they use, add-ins, different marinades and flavor profiles… There are so many things Texas does better (queso, fajitas, guacamole, margaritas) but California wins ceviche.

No raw fish. It’s a texture thing. I also don’t like the flavor of sushi rice nor the seaweed wrap. My husband loves it all.
When we go out to sushi I always pick something cooked.

One of my favorite rolls is a veggie roll from a local place with asparagus, carrot, green onion, shishito pepper, avocado, and topped with jalapeño and lemon slices. Sounds like Deli Sushi? We love that place and wish they would open one in North County. Also a huge fan of ceviche, which isn't "raw" in the same way but also isn't cooked with heat. It would have been in the mid-late 80s when I first had sushi. A friend's girlfriend was half Japanese and taught us how to make sushi rice and our own rolls.

Sounds like Deli Sushi? We love that place and wish they would open one in North County. Which one do you go to? We go to the one in Kearny Mesa, near the Japanese markets. There used to be one in downtown San Diego. It had a take-out counter, and when I worked downtown I would often get something from there to take back to the office. Or sometimes a couple of us would get something to go and sit down by the waterfront to eat.
