I’ve had sciatica for over 20 years. It bothers me a couple of times a year. Right now I’ve gone through a stretch of a few weeks having attacks and episodes.
I’ve found walking to be one of the best solutions. There is also a yoga stretch — maybe called crow pose? — that I find also helps but is painful to do.
I hope you feel better. It can be debilitating.

Exercise and stretches work best for me. - def not staying still! Take pain killers as needed but google for reliable sources for some exercises and stretches - there's loads out there I feel your pain and hope it improves soon!

Staying still is bad advice. Google McKenzie exercises for sciatica. McKenzie is an Aussie PT who developed the exercises. Really more like yoga stretches than exercise. My worst episode of sciatica was the first. I did these exercises (sort of like the cobra yoga position) every hour the first few days.

Stretches. As well as B vitamins. They can help with nerve pain. Don't sit long periods of time either.

Stretching and more stretching and do it again, even before you get out of bed.

Lower back and hamstring stretches helped me immensely.

He said the only way to heal is to stay still. What?! No. Are you sure it's sciatica? Hurting your back putting on undies doesn't sound like sciatica. I get it quite often. The first thing I do is take a couple of anti inflammatories. I find that walking really helps, as does stretching. But you have to make sure you're doing the right stretching. On the few times it's been really bad, I've gone to a PT.

I should stretch and excercize when I’m in pain? Could he have meant to stay still until I wasn’t in pain? When I was in the doctors office I was in agony.

My son suffered with it for 6 months before he went to the doctor. He had been sleeping with the heating pad. The doctor told him to take 800 mg of Ibuprofen twice a day and to ice it instead of heat. The ice reduces the inflamation which is often what causes the pain.
Hope you get some relief soon.

The NHS here in the UK have a website with lots of great info and advice about a wide range of health conditions. Here is the link to their section on sciatica, if you click through on the exercise link it has a video with a physio showing some stretches. www.nhs.uk/conditions/sciatica/

Sciatica is nerve irritation/inflammation or compression, that would take some time to calm down by itself so you could be lying down for a while!

Specific stretches for sciatic pain helped me, you can find tons of suggestions by googling. Also walking gently helps. Last but not least, icing it helps to ease some of the pain. My worst episode of it, I could not sleep. My dr prescribed muscle relaxants that did nothing for me. I was still unable to sleep. Truly the stretching, gentle movement, and icing helped it. I hope you get relief soon, it can be so miserable!

When I had sciatica because of a ruptured disc, the only position I didn't have pain in was lying flat on my back. it ran down the back of my right leg and was so painful. I'm glad that it cleared up with surgery but I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone.

It depends on if it is disc related or muscular. Make sure there is nothing structurally wrong that could get worse.
I've had it for almost 30 years and have done absolutely everything. Chiropractic, PT, TENS, accupuncture, cortizone shots, etc. I used to be able to stretch it out, but as I get older, it's harder to get rid of. What works best is stretching and not sitting for long periods.

Hip stretches, ice, and Voltaren cream are the only things that help me.

40 years ago primary care Dr gave me great advice. 1- when standing at the sink, open cabinet door and put your foot up on floor of cabinet. 2- I have bar stools that are 30" high. I lean over and place my elbows in the stool, legs straight and let my back sag(total relaxing), like a swayed back horse. It is amazing. Now I often do the sagging over my 25" bed. Every thing is done slowly and gently... Also walking..

The focus of the McKenzie exercises is centralization of pain, meaning pain should move away from one side and more centered in the body. These exercises are not like "exercise" but more like gentle stretches as you do in yoga. Yes, you stretch through the pain. My first episode I woke up with, and I was only able to walk around in an L-shape, because straightening out was agony. I did a stretch once an hour which was mainly lying on my belly on the floor, gradually working into a modified cobra stretch as in yoga.

I’ma hurtin’ for certain! Go see your doctor. You will likely get a better safe remedy from a medical doctor than asking on a forum such here. Go back to him if the advice he gave you doesn’t work.Medicine is instant, you have to give it more that 5 minutes of heat and sitting still to work! Oh you could take essentials oils, herbal remedies, CBD oil or some other common popular thing that will cover up symptoms making it difficult for a medical doctor to diagnose.

Can I ask why people would tell some one who went to the DOCTOR and was prescribed rest/sitting still and, would then say do stretches, but this book to learn what to do, etc? Do you think you know more than her DOCTOR??

To me, based on her description, her doctor gave her a wrong diagnosis, bad advice or both.

This is why you will never het a nurse, physical therapist or other professional to give advice, because even if we were to someone somewhere has to “or up the snakoil of CBD, mineral oil, etc” ,you just give ir the olf three day try or whatever the doc ordered.yeah, more that Half the docs can’t stand to see you coming.they already have you figure out. And as soon as he can get of there, he will abandoned your narrow minded town who wants Amazon! can’t standd to see hyoi commin.

Do you think you know more than her DOCTOR?? GPs or PCPs are rarely specialists in things like backs which are very complex obviously. Personally I would see someone more specialist for that, which is what many people on here have suggested.

Do you think you know more than her DOCTOR?? I think they meant after this pain has resolved. I certainly couldn’t stretch or walk while this thing was bad. Today, I can move pretty easily but I’m still taking it easy.
