It's been warm here for all week, I was kind of chalking it up to that.
But now it's cooled off, and it's 7 in the morning here and I am hot and sweaty, sticky sweaty. I'm really getting tired of this. I'm 54, this has been going on off and on for at least 4 years, if not more.
I don't have any other symptoms so I guess I've been lucky that way. Heck I'm not even cranky, insert the mom from That 70's show here. But I am hot flashing and sweaty. I am SO OVER it!

I hate the hot flushes as well ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) Have you tried something like the 'chillow'? I didn't like it, but I have friends who swear by it. I have a remote control fan next to my bed and opposite my chair in the living room. That is the only thing that keeps me comfortable in the heat we are experiencing here. I also carry a little battery fan in my handbag and just ignore the amused or irritated looks I get when using it! 'This too shall pass'. I wish it would hurry up, though!

I've had some good luck with Estroven. They make a nighttime version too. It might be worth a try!

I started perimenopause 10 years ago! Now I am into total "hot flash" and am only in my mid 40s. I also keep the remote control to the fan above our bed right next to me and use it as needed! At first my husband would beg me not to use it often. After hearing a conversation with his sister and sister in law, he better understood what we all go through. He just goes under the blankets and pillows without a single complain when I blast the fan!!
I recently got a gel pillow at Costco that I like, but that only takes care of my head. Someone told me they have them for the whole bed... I need to look into that!
The only plus to all this--- NO MORE periods!!

I am 56 and almost NEVER cold. I can't take the heat at all. I am freezing DH out of the family room.
On the other hand, he loved me all winter. I welcomed his cold feet on my legs!

Sells at walmart for about $18. I keep planning on getting one. I've heard they work really well.

My hot flashes got so bad that I literally was not sleeping because I spent the entire night flipping the covers off and on, off and on, off and on.
I finally saw my doctor and he was hesitant to give me hormones even on a short term basis because of my history with endometriosis and a few other risk factors. He did, however, prescribe a very low dose of Prozac and I have to say that it has helped immensely. I was skeptical at first and thought that it was helping a "little" but DH insisted that he saw a dramatic change. After about 3 weeks, I could say that I also saw/felt the vast improvement. Are all the hot flashes gone? No. But I would say they have been cut by about 80%.
I believe I'm on 20 mg per day (in the morning) which is half of the starting dose for depression. So at that dosage, there are very few side effects, but I get all of the benefit to resolve the hot flashes.
As a matter of fact, I just recently read a Mayo Clinic trial that also indicated that anti-depressants were just as effective as hormones in treating symptoms of peri-menopause.

That's an interesting post Burning Feather. I'm like you, I spend a good part of the night throwing the blankets off, putting them back on.
I think I will make a doctor's appointment and bring some of these points up.
Thanks for replying ladies. Nice to know I'm not alone, because sometimes I feel like I am!

Your post made me realise that my flushes have really subsided actually...I almost hadn't noticed weirdly ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I'm about done with my cycle unpredictability though ![;-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/squint.png)

Burning Feather my GYN tried to put me on Prozac as well but I was too scared about the side effects and how difficult some people found it to wean off of that I refused to take it! I have begun having some symptoms of peri a few months ago and had real bad anxiety etc as well. I have thyroid issues as well and am waiting on the results of my ultrasound to be sure that it isn't what is causing some of my symptoms. I am only in my early 40's and am not looking forward to 10 plus years of the symptoms I have been having as some ladies have said they have experienced! Maybe I should reconsider the Prozac.....

That is very interesting. Maybe that is why I only get hotflashes every once in awhile? I will definitely bring it up with my OB/GYN. Thanks for mentioning this.

How early did some of you start peri-menopause? I'm only 39, but I know age ranges can vary wildly. Googling symptoms, there are so many that it could be entirely possible that I'm entering. Or it could be a number of other things!

I just turned 41. Because I had to have a full hysterectomy (and every other girly organ) out because of ovarian cancer...I went into surgical menopause. It sucks. I hate it. On the bright side, my hair is so short because of chemo I don't have to deal with long hair. LOL. All during the winter (surgery was 12/9/13) I wore summer weight pajamas and barely used a blanket.

I don't monitor all my body stuff at all...but I feel like I've been in peri-menopause for several years now (I'm 52). BUT. OMG. Just started the hot flashes a few months ago. It is hell on earth. ![>:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png)

I have a stay cool gel mat for my dog( the large one ) . I guess I could 'borrow' it. I was dripping today while I was painting it's not too hot here but it certainly felt that way to me.

Or it could be a number of other things! I was right around 40 and then I had to have a hysterectomy. She took everything except one very scarred up ovary. The dr. and I are hoping to keep it for as long as possible so I don't have to take HRT.

I'm sure it started earlier and I just didn't really notice symptoms or be bothered by them, but I'm 51 and it was only in the last three months or so that the hot flashes became noticeable enough to recognize them as hot flashes and not just "damn it's hot" flashes. I still have an irregular menstrual cycle which was pretty much every other month or so for the past 2-3 years although I haven't had a cycle for 6 months now, which probably is the reason for the increase in hot flashes.

I began this journey at about age 41. I had all the symptoms you can think of and it went on for 12 years. Finally tapered off to blessed nothingness for 10 years. Then when my dh died 3 years ago all the symptoms are back and I am once again living in the frying pan. Why I have no clue but perhaps just the stress of my dh's medical condition and in the end losing him.
Anyone else think they were symptom fee only to see it start all over again?

My first symptom, though I didn't realize it, was migraines that started when I was 42. It wasn't until about 49 to 50 that the hot flashes kicked in. At first I tried flaxseed, then Estroven, and now use both: Estroven at night and flaxseed in the morning. About two months ago, the hot flashes had really calmed down, so I cut back on the Estroven. Bad idea. And can anyone tell me when the freakin' flashes STOP? I've been period-free for over 2 years!

You might look into Soma's Cool Nights pajamas. The fabric keeps you cooler. I notice a difference on nights when I'm wearing these vs. a cotton t-shirt.

I'm 45 and I had an endometrial ablation done 7 years ago. I haven't had a period since so I wasn't really if I was going through perimenopause. It started as me constantly saying to my dh and dd "Is it hot in here?". Now I am still saying it along with waking up with night sweats. I have the night sweats at least 5 nights a week. They are bad enough that I have to get up and change my clothes because they are soaked. I usually need to jump in the shower too. This sucks waking up around 3 or 4 am nightly and dealing with it. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/SCylSBljj3e3QKjxF2vn.jpg)
