I have so many questions I don't know where to start. I have a couple of trips in the next few months, one overseas, one Central America. How does one buy a burner phone? Should I buy one? I usually travel with my regular old iphone.
If using my iphone, how do I protect it, and myself?
If phone searches escalate for those returning to the US, what are your plans? As a 60-something white woman from a very red area I am not their first pick, more likely to be checked in an attempt to look "fair".
Is this a legitimate concern? It could easily be stoked to stop people from speaking out, another way to quiet opposition.
I have a pocket size digital camera that could replace my phone camera, not that pics are as important as privacy but you understand. We started as scrapbookers :

I must have missed something. Is there a reason one needs to be wary about an iphone when traveling out of the country?

Go to Walmart and buy a Trak phone (if that is still available). Then buy phone time for it. We bought one for my mom and just loaded up basic phone service for it. We would buy a 3-month plan.
I’ve read the stories of US citizens having their phones checked re-enter into the US. I don’t think it is too common, yet. Kind of scary. It could just be media hype at this point.

I’ve seen one story where a man had his phone checked when he came back into the US. They took it from him and hooked it up to something to check it. So now there is concern about phone privacy. And he was an American citizen.

I have heard a number of reports of citizens having their phones searched and/or plugged into devices that they believe may install spyware. I have two international trips in the next few months and have considered a burner phone. I have global entry, which should bypass most issues, and if not, I have turned off biometric phone features so that it can only be unlocked with a passcode that I will not give.
That said, I have made the affirmative decision that as a long-married middle-aged white woman with a bunch of cute kids who regularly does press interviews, I am well-situated to be a poster person if I do encounter difficulties; if I did not have that mindset, I would probably get a burner phone, and I am keeping an eye on reports to see if I am going to switch gears and get one anyway.

I've seen warnings of this for Canadians going in to the US.

Just an FYI - checking phones coming in to the US is not a new thing. It has been going on for quite awhile. But it is big news now because of people being denied entry because of what was found on their phones. It still has me worried though.

Right now my FB profile pic is one of DT kissing Putin. Straight to jail I go. I had thought of the phone issue. I’m wondering if deleting Facebook app would be enough. I don’t keep anything else that might be incriminating. Just 2 games and instagram.

I don’t plan on visiting the US but if I did I’d be thrown in jail for 100 years if they took a look at my phone. 🤪😄

I have a pocket size digital camera that could replace my phone camera, not that pics are as important as privacy but you understand. We started as scrapbookers : A burner phone is any phone you consider cheap enough to essentially be disposable. Tracfone for example or an older model iphone but I would not go with a secondhand one since you might miss something the previous owner left in place. At this time I don't think it is major concern unless you are already on file for suspicious activities but being prepared is never a bad idea. I would remove all images that might be questionable; keep those to cute family holiday memories and pets. Remove all social media apps, edit your search history to safe wholesome things like quilting or knitting. You don't want to wipe it so clean it looks like you don't actually use it because that is going to raise questions as to why you are carrying an obvious burner phone but you don't want anything related to politics on either side of the aisle, nothing that shows approval of violence, put in contacts for family and local to you businesses on a "who you gonna call" if you need an emergency plumber.. in other words more contacts than 4 that are family. Again, don't strip it down so much it looks like you never use it. I also would not put any banking/credit card info on it.

Don’t trifle with middle and senior age white women! I’m enjoying how many of my friends have made plans to deal with current events. Around here it’s mostly about ICE while at work or volunteering. I love it!

I must have missed the memo, but I travel a lot and I’ve never seen anyone’s phone get checked returning to the US. It can happen, but is it likely? Traveling with a burner phone makes you look like a drug mule and you sacrifice Google translate, lens, currency converter, and mapping apps. I’m rolling the dice on this one.

Just a data point for those who haven't traveled lately. My husband and I have global entry, so quick picture and waved through last week. My daughter had to go through normal line, but didn't see anything unusual there. Our plane from Germany at least was business as usual and agents seemed more interested in waving folks through then giving anyone a hard time. I'm another who would have been a happy example if someone would have given me a hard time and didn't take any precautions.
Oh and another aside as I know people have wondered if American's would be given a hard time in the current climate. Everyone in Belgium and Spain were delightful. We were mistaken from British in Belgium which is new (usually it's Irish or Aussie - never Canadian interestingly).

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but we watch the older TV show "To Catch a Smuggler" and whenever they detain someone they often search their phone.

Traveling with a burner phone makes you look like a drug mule and you sacrifice Google translate, lens, currency converter, and mapping apps. I’m rolling the dice on this one. why can't you use those aps on a burner phone? Tracfone sells the iphone SE 3rd generation for $189. Happens to be the exact phone I use. And I do use google translate, both google and apple maps, google lens. No currency converter because I've not needed it on my phone. A burner phone is simply a phone at a price point you can consider it disposable. And you are careful to think about privacy matters when using it. But all the apps you list would be part of a tourist needs.
