There was a near miss between a Delta flight and an Air Force jet Friday afternoon. Why is the military flying so low near the airports in the DC area. This is getting scary. We have military airbases here too, and so far, knock on wood, no scary incidents. Hegseth better look into this! www.yahoo.com/news/collision-warning-sounds-cockpit-delta-233009157.html

My understanding is the military bases were there first training war pilots before civilian air travel was developed enough to have flights into the area. Civilians were still traveling by train or car. The civilian airports have been added over the decades. The military does have imaginary "roads" and altitudes they are supposed to adhere to.

IMO, there is no need to investigate the situation. There IS a major need to relocate the military airport which will mean relocating the entire military base with its support structure. That is going to have major negative impact on the local economy... which is probably why it hasn't been done. Move all those service members plus families removes millions of dollars in salaries spent in the area, loosens up the rental demand on housing and creates chaos on the area a base is moved to that lacks the needed infrastructure to support a massive incoming population.

San Diego is a military town. North Island Naval Air Station is a huge operation. It is located only 5 miles from the San Diego International Airport. They are directly across the bay from each other. The NAS was here before the airport. And we used to have the Top Gun school at Miramar, which is about 10 miles east from the airport. It would be interesting to see the incident record for the area. I haven’t heard of any incidents in the news. We have had tragedies involving military planes, but none with military planes vs civilian planes.

I'm sure they can fix it by firing more federal aviation staff./s

National has always been my preferred airport because it's so close to where I live. But lately I'm thinking Dulles is a less stressful choice. It's such a narrow flight corridor coming in (or leaving) to National because they have to stay over the river and aren't allowed to fly over that part of DC and I suspect not over the Pentagon either which is nearby.

When I lived in the District, Reagan was always my preferred airport because it's close and easy to navigate. Now my DS lives in Manassas so when I visit him, I fly into Dulles. It's not my favorite airport because it's huge but I'm glad to be flying in and out of there now.

It is located only 5 miles from the San Diego International Airport. I bet it is less than 2 miles of air space between the two, but as you said, I've never heard of any incident involving civilian and military air craft. Someone posted on Reddit this morning about ATC saying they weren't paid as expected yesterday.
