I've used PS Elements 10 for years, but with my computer upgrade, thought I'd like to try something else as mine is very old. Any suggestions for a stand-alone (not subscription) photo editing software? I just do basic stuff... crop, remove unwanted people/things in the picture, play around with lighting, etc.; nothing complicated or difficult.

i just bought PSE2024. it is the last version with an unlimited lifespan.
photopea (web based) is an ok alternative, depending on what you want to do.

Free: krita, GIMP, photopea Single Purchase: Affinity Photo
krita is what I use daily right now but it's more for art/painting. Affinity I ended up dropping because it had a few quirks that messed up my workflows, but I was a previous power user of Photoshop (full edition, not the lite). If you're a casual editor it's probably perfect for you.

Thank you for the suggestions. I think I'll start by checking out Gimp!

I used PSE. Because of vision loss, I am no longer able to use a camera. My DH uses Lightroom (older version- 10, I think) Affinity, Topaz and most recently 0n1 ( www.on1.com/ ) on his iMac. He is primarily a wildlife and landscape photographer. He occasionally goes out and shoots wildlife with his boss and his boss likes GIMP. DH has used GIMP for work (he does small product photography), but is not a fan.

I realize it's not the same thing, but dang they can do a lot now. I have an iPhone so I can also play around with Photos on my laptop.

I bought Photoshop Elements from Amazon and then will use it for years. There is no subscription and I like that it's easy to use since I already know Photoshop.

I primarily use Lightroom for photo editing, paying $14.99 monthly for it and additional Adobe services. I prefer monthly subscriptions because they ensure I receive all updates.

I bought the 2022 version last year when it was on sale for about $50 or so, but honestly these days I use my iPad more and more for that kind of thing. For color correction, cropping and light retouching I use the app Snapseed and for more involved stuff I use ProCreate. About the only thing I use PSE for anymore these days is page layout things I want to print (cards, tags, images for buttons, labels) or more involved photo retouching.
