What do you do to control it? I refuse to color my hair. I don’t want the upkeep. The gray is multiplying and has a brassy attitude. Is there a product to keep it inline or do I just have to let it be a bit wild and stick out from my non gray hair?
eta…maybe brassy is the wrong word. It’s just kind of difficult to manage.

I use a purple shampoo from ogx. I really like it. My hair is mouse brown with quite a bit of silver. The purple makes it shiny!
My DD (13) dyed her hair red and was tired of it so we stripped the dye and it had an Orange tint so she used a blue shampoo we got at target and one use toned it down.
You want colors that are across from each other on the color wheel. Blue cancels orange and purple cancels yellow.
The more you use the shampoo the better the color cancel works. I use it once a week alternating with ogx coconut something or another that I can’t remember. Neither DD’s or my color correcting shampoo has a companion conditioner so you can use whatever.
eta: DD’s shampoo is John Freida Blue Crush and she uses whatever conditioner she has on hand that she shares with DS, my regular shampoo and conditioner is OGX Nourishing Coconut, my purple is OGX Blonde enhance purple toning shampoo and my conditioner I use with that is OGX Thick and full biotin and collagen.

Use a bluing shampoo if there is an orange tone to your brass. It does leave a very thin almost transparent tint to the hair shaft but the blue cancels the brass color. The tint left on the hair is temporary and not an actual dye. If it is more yellow than orange go with a purple tones shampoo.

I also use a purple shampoo. Our northern home has rusty water so I need to use it to strip the rust. Darn hair won't hold a color but does hold the brassy rust color
I started going white at 25. Not gray, 3 streaks of pure white that then spread. By mid 30 I was 90% white but coloring every 3 weeks. It was so freeing to stop 17 years ago. Plus at that time it was $70 each color job. The white hair makes me look older and invisible but I deal with it.

Like others have said, blue shampoo. I don’t use it as often as I should, but it does work.

I just learned from this thread that I should go buy purple shampoo.
My hair is short, and getting grayer/whiter by the month, it seems.
I keep the wiry hairs tamed down with Got2BGlued hair wax when I'm at work.
I've not bothered dyeing over the gray because of the expense and upkeep that I can't justify. But yeah, the gray definitely ages me.

Full disclosure-
I’m old and I’m still stubbornly refuse to stop coloring my hair. Ha.
With that said here’s what works / didn’t work for my fine, thin, straight, short hair.
I stopped coloring during Covid because my salon shut down. My hairstylist does a process where she highlights and low lights my hair. I’ve always had trouble with my natural hair and my highlights turning brassy between coloring.
Because of the tendency for my hair color to turn brassy, I’ve tried many different purple shampoos. The biggest problem I have found is that they are very drying for my thin hair. If your hair is prone to being dry, I’ll make the following recommendations.
Be sure to use sulfate free products. I like L’Oreal EverPure SULFATE FREE PURPLE SHAMPOO FOR TONING BLONDE BLEACHED HAIR.
I would also suggest trying the conditioner only at first for the extra moisture. Fine, thin hair can be pretty absorbent, so using both can live a bluish tint. For both the shampoo and conditioner, when first using the products, cut way back on the recommended time for leaving the product on your hair until you are sure how much toning you need. Ask me how I know this. Ha.
Even though I color, my favorite product is L'Oreal Paris Le Color Gloss One Step In-Shower Toning Hair Gloss. It’s very moisturizing and easy to use. I rarely use purple shampoo any more.

I started going gray in my twenties, so I've been coloring for a lot of years. At this point, I'm 100% white/gray under my dye. For the past several years, I've been really frustrated with how out of control my hair has been. A few months ago, I asked my stylist to cut it into short layers. I now treat it like curly hair. It turns out that my formerly stick-straight hair is now very wavy. It works so much better without blow drying and trying to "control" it.

I also embraced the gray during Covid and at the insistance of my hair stylist. Even though she was drastically cutting into her profits by not coloring my hair every 5 weeks. I use a purple conditioner from her as well. Love the results and get compliments constantly. People think I intentionally dye my hair to get these results.

Even though I color, my favorite product is L'Oreal Paris Le Color Gloss One Step In-Shower Toning Hair Gloss. It’s very moisturizing and easy to use. I rarely use purple shampoo any more. I stopped coloring my hair nearly three years ago. I'd get bright white regrowth after less than two weeks and it drove me crazy. I don't always love my silver hair, I admit, but I am learning to accept it. I was using purple shampoo but switched to this L'Oreal gloss Restless Spirit mentions and really like it. For those stubborn hairs that stick up off my head I use a wax product or this hair mascara.

my hair is now about 50% - 75% gray (my avatar pic is at least 15 years old, lol), and while my hair has always been thick / coarse / curly, it's changed with the gray coming in. The gray hair is much more 'wiry' if that's how you spell it (?) in texture than the brown hair it's replacing. I use a shampoo and conditioner I buy at Ulta- Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner. It helps to cut down on the wiry-ness a bit. Although there are still some errant gray hairs that stick out weirdly now and then. lol. eta: my gray hair is also NOT as curly as the brown hair; it's more 'out of control' than wavy / curly. So I currently have a short / layered cut. I may try to grow it out again, but the gray hair texture does make it tough to figure out what to do with it. eta2: I can't wait till my hair is ALL silver / white, so I can dye it a fun pink / purple color!!

Add me to the list of Peas going out to buy purple shampoo. lol. I never knew that! hahaha Mine is pretty grey/silver now and I've never dyed it and don't plan to start. I never wanted the expense or upkeep. My mother's hair was silver and I always hoped mine would be the same. I think it's partly there...not quite as pretty as my mom's was but not plain grey. I'll be trying some purple shampoo.

You are concerned with the texture not the color, correct?
I use the k18 hair mask and it does help with texture (I also highlight my hair though)
I also only use sulfate free shampoo.
