As most know, Texas is often a testing ground for far-right bills that Rs want to enact nationwide. The latest bill wants to exclude a parent's refusal to accept/affirm their child's gender identity or sexual orientation from the definition of abuse or neglect under state law.
Keep in mind that Gov. Abbott already declared *any* gender affirming care for minors to be child abuse and ordered CPS to investigate the families of trans kids.
Remember, folks, it's OK to abuse your kids as long as Jesus made you do it. Same goes for withholding life-saving vaccines, forcing religious activities that demean and humiliate, and setting your kids up for a lifetime of shame and self loathing through religious indoctrination.
Please be on the lookout for similar bills in other states and contact your legislators to tell them to vote no. Kids should not be the casualties of the right's culture wars.

When we ( dh and 3 children ) moved to Texas in 1990, we were so excited. We did, bought into all the Texas things. Politics was the last thing on my mind. Everything was running as smoothly as ever. For all I knew, anyway. I think Ann Richards was Governor. Really made no difference to me.
But, now, under Abbott - it’s a disgraceful state.

We moved here in 1997, shortly after Ann Richards left office. We never expected the turn this state would take.

But wait, there's more! Another fun bill potentially heading to the Texas lege:
This is, again, being floated in the hopes that even if it doesn't pass, it could act as a framework for an eventual nationwide abortion ban. Be aware.
Oh and Texas passed religious school vouchers last week as well. Abbott finally got the result his billionaire backers bought and paid for. So our state tax dollars will be going to pay the tuition of kids at private schools, many of whom could easily afford it even without a voucher. Welfare for the wealthy. Coming soon to a state near you! (Texas is actually behind some other states on this one, as our rural Republicans correctly surmised that vouchers will only hurt their already cash-strapped public schools. But no matter! Abbott primaried out the rural no votes and installed some yes-men willing to sell out their constituents to give him what his donors want.)
Dems and some Republicans tried to pass an amendment to the bill to make it a ballot initiative, but Abbott strong-armed the Rs down on that and even called in Trump to tell them to fall in line or face the consequences. He knows vouchers wouldn't pass here in an election. Same reason Texas will never get to vote on abortion.

Step one to banning hormonal birth control and mifepristone, no doubt. They don't care a bit about water pollution.
