Yeah we are going on a trip May 7... We have them and passports, we'll let you know how the lines go... Ohhh, what a "fun" day to travel! let us know how it goes! Oy... I just realized that May 7th is the day we're flying out also, for an international trip. I'll have to mention that to dh.

I had my passport renewed though I have no plans to leave the US any time soon. Since 9/11, I have always taken my passport when I fly anyway. That way I keep my DL tucked away and only get it out for the rental car. I'm afraid of misplacing the license in all the constant security checks.

I got my Real ID a couple of years ago when my license was up for renewal anyway. Everyone here was moaning about the paperwork required, all the things we needed to prove who we are, etc. I looked at the list online, brought what they said, and was in and out of the DMV in about 20 minutes. Which included time waiting in line. Painless.

If you need to do it, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE MORE FORMS OF ID THAN THEY SAY! I took the 2 forms that were approved and they denied one of them. No reason, they said it isn't a valid form (I think it was my mortgage statement). It didn't have my middle name SPELLED out. Yes, everything should have your entire name spelled out. I had another form of ID but since it wasn't on the list, they wouldn't take it. Then they told me a bank statement would be fine, I ran home and got it, went back in and "nope" who told you we would accept that? I told them "that lady". Nope. I had to reschedule my appt and start all over again. I have never been so pissed and I let them know.

I got an enhanced one a few years ago. I am glad to know it is "better" than real because all you hear about is the need for real id and I was worried that I needed to look into that instead.

My sons and I all got it in 2020. My husband got it in 2021 when he renewed his drivers license. I wish I would have ordered a passport card to go with my passport. As we renew our passports, we will definitely order the card as well.

I was that person who took more than they needed in terms of identifiers to be safe. 😂
And then my first picture had glare on my glasses so she wanted me to take them off. I politely asked her if she could try one more time and it worked the second time. I detest how I look without my glasses since I've worn them since I was 5 or 6, and I wear them 25/8.

I got the Enhanced ID last time I renewed my drivers license. My passport expired this month so I have to renew that. I have just been putting it off. It seems like when I do renew I should get the passport card too.

I’ve had mine for a while now.
But my passport expires less than 90 days after our Spain trip this summer, so I need to renew it….

The enhanced is actually kind of a step up from a real ID drivers license and allows you to use it to enter at least Canada and I believe Mexico, Bermuda, and/or some places in the Caribbean. Does Washington also issue a drivers license that is also just a real ID and not an Enhanced? Just curious as you can get both in my state but it is more effort to get an enhanced because of the international aspect. I also think there are only a handful of states that offer enhanced. The enhanced has a flag instead of the star. The enhanced allows. you to enter Mexico or Canada, but not if you are flying in.

I agree about the glasses. They will not allow you to wear them in our state for pictures…which in my head is kind of stupid as you will always see me in glasses (I have worn them since 4th grade) and the picture without them doesn’t not look normal. I begged and pleaded to no avail…the rules were the rules. Hahaha.

I got the Real ID about the same time South Carolina started issuing them. With two sons in the military, I wanted it to ensure access to the base. Then they kept putting the effective date off further and further. But I was glad I went ahead when I did. One less thing to worry about down the road.
I'm another that takes my passport when I fly even domestically. It's just habit for me in an airport.
We're flying internationally on the 8th of May. But with pre-check hopefully there will be no holdup due to others with incorrect IDs.

For the most part I would only drive to Canada so wasn’t even thinking about the flying aspect. 😄 And I have only driven to Mexico also, but was curious on what Caribbean islands accepted it. Again not thinking about flights, but wondered if you were on a cruise could you use it instead of a passport for most Island entries? I am hoping for a by sea entry…I figure one of these days I might have to sail to Bermuda to escape. 😄.

Yes, U.S. citizens can use an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) for closed-loop cruises (cruises that start and end in a U.S. port). An EDL is a state-issued driver's license that can be used as proof of identity and citizenship for land and sea crossings to and from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Ohhh, what a "fun" day to travel! let us know how it goes! What is the significance aof May 7? That’s the day they start cracking down on people not having a Real ID for domestic flights. The deadline has gotten pushed back multiple times but this time it’s for real. It’s been all over the local news how long the lines have been everywhere for the DMV because so many people waited until the dead last minute to do it. Dh has had his for quite some time, I just upgraded my regular license to Real ID earlier this year. The last time my DL had to be renewed was during Covid when all the DMVs were closed so I did it online. I don’t believe I could get a Real ID without going in person which wasn’t an option at that time.

DH laughs every time I see it because it looks more like a mugshot than anything. I may ask my eye doctor to write me a letter when I get a passport one day that says my glasses have to be on for the picture. If I don't have my glasses on, we're all in for a heap of trouble because my eyes are horrendous.

We really do need to get together one day... we have a lot in common. I recently got new glasses and even though I had a prescription from my eye doctor the optician at the glasses places wanted their optometrist to tweak it. At the very beginning of the appointment she was asking a bunch of general questions including "how often do you wear your glasses"... um. lol. I said "take a look at the eye doc's prescription..." She looked and said "oh yeah, all the time then." I can say that I have never lost my glasses because they're always on my face until I'm in the shower or sleeping, so no opportunity for them to get lost.

She doesn't own a car. We took her medical invoices, credit card statements, tax papers, and anything else we could find with her name and address on it. Luckily, we took the right stuff and didn't have to come back with more paperwork.

I think different people at different DMVs give different answers on what paperwork is valid. Total crapshoot going.
I had updated my SS card to my married name (thankfully), and someone I know was denied verification because her name wasn’t changed on hers.
The DMV employee I had made sure my passport and Enhanced DL names (full, including middle) match now. I’m glad they suggested it. Maybe one less worry come voting time?

We all got ours a few years ago. I need to see about getting my passport renewed. It expired a few years ago, so maybe I need to get an entirely new one? They still consider it a renewal. But you will get a new one, and they return your old one with holes punched in it. Thanks, katlady!

I also wear my glasses all the time (except shower and sleeping) and can still manage to lose them - numerous pairs at that. All because of changing between prescription sunglasses and regular glasses. I also have to admit to far too many weekend trips or a couple of days away where for some reason I forgot (or lost) my regular glasses and had to wear my sunglasses the entire time. Nothing I could do about. I am sure I looked pretty foolish at some places…but stuff happens. 😆

When I traveled to Alaska last year, I flew out of Canada so I needed a passport. Never had one in all of my 60 years! So I got a passport along with a pp card. That should be good enough, right? I was thinking of getting the Real ID, but if I don't need to, I won't.

I think the only times mine have gone "missing" is when a certain 4 legged child decides it's breakfast time and she needs it NOW and starts batting them off the nightstand, and then I am delayed even more in feeding her because I can't find them right away. She hasn't done that for a few months, though. Although now that I say it, it's probably gotten back into that silly little brain of hers.

It's on my to-do list. It's a multi-step pain in my butt, so I've been putting it off for ages. But I have recently taken the first step. Now I need to wait on mail to arrive. My state has the annoying habit of issuing official birth certificates to people, then changing their mind about the "official-ness" of them, and making you pay for the new and improved official ones. The birth certificate I used to get married isn't good enough for real ID. But the marriage certificate issued using that old birth certificate is good enough to change my social security card. Then the changed social security card, along with my current ID is somehow good enough for Real ID.
