I had the door cracked because I was trying to keep my dog in who was going crazy. I asked if they wanted to come in and they said no so they must not have been too concerned once they saw me. I think probably because you asked them to come in. I suspect most domestic violence victims aren't inviting the police in. -- I remember once years ago we were having one of those monsoon torrential downpours here, and in the middle of it (early evening) there was a police officer at my door. He said they had received a 911 call from our address. I said no one had called, it was just my dh, ds, and me at home, and would he like to come in... etc. He declined, then told me that the rain was messing with the county's 911 system. But I think they know just by our demeanor whether or not it's real. Of course that's probably not 100% fool proof, but the police are pretty experienced with that. Your situation was more startling than mine though, because you were woken up by the police. I actually had a similar experience. I was visiting a friend going to college in the US in the early 00’s, and I was trying to call home to my parents. The college dorms had a weird phone setup, and there were all of these country area codes to get a line to Europe. Before I knew it I had dialed 911. I panicked and just hung up the phone. 15 minutes later a police officer knocked on the dormroom door. Every one else was in class, so I opened the door and panicked again! A cop! Why?? It didn’t occur to me that a misdial to 911 would make them send out someone to check on me. I offered to let him in, but I guess my explanation was enough for him. A misdial to the emergency number here would NEVER make anyone send an officer to do a welfare check. I appreciate the thought behind it. I didn’t need help that day, but I’m sure it has helped some people. I would be proud to have neighbours that cared enough to want to make sure I was okay after hearing screaming!

That's really scary. I'm not surprised you were freaked out.
But now I REALLY want to know what they heard!

We have an army base a few miles down the side of the mountain. Most days I can hear at least 5 of their military calls (don't know the real word). It comes in my bedroom window when I have it open. Last night, I heard Taps coming from the opposite direction at 10 pm when I was outside with the dogs. Could not figure out how it switched places. Maybe the same thing happened with your neighbor and the sound was switched. Hope everyone is well.
