What a rude awakening! I was in bed with the dog and thought I heard knocking at my door. A few minutes later, I hear "Police, open up!" I looked outside and saw flashlights by my door so I pulled on a pair of shorts and opened the door.
They said they had gotten a potential domestic violence call from my neighbors that they heard someone screaming. I said, it's just me and the dog and we were asleep. They asked a few more questions like why was my garage door light on. I told them I had just forgotten to turn it off.
I guess they were satisfied that all was well because they left but man, was my heart racing! Needless to say I didn't get anymore sleep last night and am dragging today.

What the hell?
So sorry that was your night.
I'm going with either your neighbours heard the wrong direction and pointed out the wrong home, or (coming from somebody who listens to a lot of true crime and sees bad neighbour tiktoks a lot) they did it on purpose because they are assholes causing problems.
UGH

UGH I live in a duplex but my bedroom is not by the shared walls so I have no idea what they think they heard. Maybe I screamed in my sleep? I highly doubt it and would be surprised they could hear it. I'll need to ask them.

Oh, how awful. I'm sorry that happened. Gosh, that would have scared me half to death to be woken up that way!

How scary! I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep, either. I wonder what your neighbors actually heard.

That's scary.
Foxes can sound like a human screaming, any chance that's what they heard?

I’m sorry you were disturbed but I’m glad your neighbors reported that they thought someone was in danger. Too many people think they should “mind their own business” instead of reporting intimate partner violence. It takes a village.

While it was certainly something that would rattle me enough not to go back asleep, I am thankful your neighbors cared enough to have you checked on. So many times neighbors don't want to get involved and just turn a blind eye. Im glad they didn't - even if they were wrong.

I'm wondering if the police had the wrong address or went to the wrong house. That does happen. My neighborhood is horribly numbered. I stood on the porch to make sure the ambulance was able to find and go to the correct house.

For sure. i really don't know my neighbors other than to wave if we are the driveway at the same time, but I'm super curious about what they think they heard. DS asked me if I screamed in my sleep and I was like, I don't think so, but even then, I'm not sure how they would have heard it. I sleep with a noise machine and my bedroom is in the opposite end of the house from our shared walls. I'm more curious than anything and might have to pop over and ask.

yikes. i am surprised that the police didn't ask you to step outside so that they could talk to you without anyone else in your house hearing.

I had the door cracked because I was trying to keep my dog in who was going crazy. I asked if they wanted to come in and they said no so they must not have been too concerned once they saw me.

I'm glad everything was okay.
It's always better to make the call, and have it be nothing....then not calling and someone really needed help.

I think probably because you asked them to come in. I suspect most domestic violence victims aren't inviting the police in. -- I remember once years ago we were having one of those monsoon torrential downpours here, and in the middle of it (early evening) there was a police officer at my door. He said they had received a 911 call from our address. I said no one had called, it was just my dh, ds, and me at home, and would he like to come in... etc. He declined, then told me that the rain was messing with the county's 911 system. But I think they know just by our demeanor whether or not it's real. Of course that's probably not 100% fool proof, but the police are pretty experienced with that. Your situation was more startling than mine though, because you were woken up by the police.
