How odd. I did not encounter the paywall and I have no subscription to Popular Mechanics. Maybe you can google the subject and find a story.

I googled and found a NYTimes story from 2020 (? I think). Try googling a few key words and see if other sources come up, too. Apparently this isn’t breaking news.  (I can’t gift the article because I access the NYT on my sister’s subscription and don’t want to abuse the privilege.)

It would make sense that people leaving would try to leave some kind of message behind to indicate where they were headed. Yet, there's never been concrete proof that's what actually happened. Mark Horton and Scott Dawson finding evidence of metal working in the region where the Croatoans lived seems like rock-solid evidence Europeans with those skills linked up with them.
