places recently? I'm in the US for reference. I've ordered from Wool Warehouse in the UK numerous times and recently Hobbii in Denmark but never South Africa. I was set to make a large purchase but saw the warning that additional taxes and fees will be assessed to the purchaser beyond the amount paid to the seller.
Any feel for how much that would be and how/when that is assessed and how do you pay it? A super general google of purchases from South Africa to USA indicated 15% but I'm sure the data changes daily lately and not sure that was specific to yarns/crafts.
I'd really like to purchase some of the yarns but the shipping cost is around 50% of the yarn cost so it won't be inexpensive. Just don't want to get hit with another 25-30% more.
Thanks.

I just have regular yarn bought in the USA, but I have noticed from time to time that the yarn says it was made in Turkey.
(Technically, the Linus blanket leader buys our yarn, but she goes to Joann's (now closed) or other local places.

I have purchased yarn from Ula & Lia. It's from Mongolia. Beautiful yarn. If I remember correctly it was shipped from here in the US. www.ulaandlia.com

Do they not give you a final total including those fees before you hit the buy button?

Do they not give you a final total including those fees before you hit the buy button? No, because the fee is added on by customs in the US when the parcel arrives. It is kind of hard to even know what percentage each country is getting. What I don’t know is if now you have to go to the post office to pick up the package and pay the tariff.

Here is what AI is saying:
General Tariff: The general tariff rate for yarn in South Africa is 15%. Preferential Treatment: South Africa's tariff structure includes preferential treatment for member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), where some goods, including yarns, may be duty-free. Specific Yarn Types: Wool Yarn: Wool yarn, if not put up for retail sale, has a tariff rate of 0.00%. Cotton Yarn: Cotton yarn has a standard tariff of 15%, depending on specific characteristics like whether it is single, multiple, or cabled, and the weight of cotton.
Based on this, I would say your biggest hit would be 15%. But, who really knows until you receive it. Have you checked other boards, like a knitting board, or maybe even Reddit?

I’m understanding the 15% is the tariff SA imposes on their imports. My googling suggests the US imposes 31% on SA imports.

I went ahead and made my purchase yesterday. $186 total including shipping (the shipping is over 1/3 of this cost). Does this mean I am looking at both a 15% fee AND a 31% fee?? This will end up being a very expensive purchase .

The 15% is for people in SA who import things into SA. As far as the 31%, who knows what the situation will be when the parcel arrives. Please update us.

There are "other" fees besides just the tariff percentage. It's the customs/duty fees that are exorbitant. Some carriers are charging $100+ for the pleasure of filling out customs paperwork. That charge is after the fact, once the package lands in the US. They are basically holding packages hostage until the fees are paid. The fees are due to the $800 de minimis exception being taken away. There is a way to clear your packages yourself to eliminate the fee. That is explained about half way down the first page. There is some real world experience with packages noted in this thread. 2peasrefugees.boards.net/thread/151310/vb-sct-tarrif-situationsAll that to say, at this time, I would NOT purchase from outside the US.

I did hear about other fees but had not heard from anyone with a recent experience.
